The Week Ahead in Beer: A Christmas tradition returns at SFBC

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Socorro, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

One of the truly great holiday traditions in New Mexico, as far as beer goes, is the annual 12 Beers of Christmas at Santa Fe Brewing. The good news is it’s back, and technically it started Tuesday with the release of Dysphotic Stout (7.6% ABV), a roasty, burly-as-hell American-style stout. The Dysphotic is the winter release in the Ever Changing Series, so if you cannot stop by the brewery off I-25 or the Albuquerque taproom, you can still take it home with you. The other beers will start today, on tap only, at both locations. First up is Hippie Chick (7% ABV), a classic “Chicken Mixer” of the Hefeweizen and Chicken Killer. For the rest, well, here you go:

  • Thursday: Java Java (8% ABV) — the Java Stout aged on an extra dose of Ohori’s Coffee
  • Friday: Jingle Bel-gian Dark Strong (8.3% ABV) — a bourbon barrel-aged version of last year’s ECS Belgian Dark Strong
  • Saturday: You Cannot Have the Mango (4.1% ABV) — Santa Fe Gold infused with, well, you know
  • Sunday: Happier Camper (6.5% ABV) — double dry-hopped Happy Camper
  • Monday: Brass Monkey (6.9% ABV) — yup, malt liquor and orange juice, and the Beastie Boys song stuck in your head
  • Tuesday: Cinnabrown (5.2% ABV) — Nut Brown blended with cinnamon and vanilla Mexican chocolate
  • Dec. 21: Adobier Igloo (6% ABV) — Adobe Igloo dry spiced with extra cacao nibs and chile flakes
  • Dec. 22: Single Barrel Sour (6.2% ABV) — the classic beer, aged for two years
  • Dec. 23: The Manhattan (13.2% ABV) — Chicken Killer-based version of the classic cocktail
  • Dec. 24: Mulled Porter (6.3% ABV) — State Pen Porter aged on a winter spice blend

There are ton of holiday-themed events at breweries and taprooms around both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Check the individual listings below for Albuquerque Brewing, Boese Brothers, Bow & Arrow, Dialogue, Duel (ABQ taproom), Tractor, and Second Street.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few new options to check out. Vienna Amber popped up at Bosque over the weekend. Boxing Bear is taking off with Scotch Rocket, plus Rye Hard should get you in the holiday spirit. Cheeky Codswallop ESB is back at Canteen. Chama River is feeling festive, in a naughty way, with Krampus, a big barleywine. Drafty Kilt debuts their third house beer, McWabbit Pale Ale. Flix Brewhouse unveils Radegast American Pale Ale on Thursday and Rebel Yell Porter on Friday to coincide with the release of a little movie you might have heard of called Rogue One. Marble is motoring with new seasonals, including India Red Lager, Howlin Down Brown, and Boysenberry Gose. Ponderosa should have an Amber Ale ready this weekend. Starr Brothers is feeling, um, festive with Starrgasm IPA. Turtle Mountain goes big with Depravity Barleywine, which should be on tap by the weekend.

Up in Santa Fe, Chili Line rolls out LOCO Motive, a Vienna lager. Rowley Farmhouse Ales has a new grisette, Greyscale. Second Street has a fresh batch of Mosaic Pale Ale at the Railyard location.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week.
