This is E-Rock, here for a special Tuesday installment of the Week Ahead in Beer. I took yesterday off to observe Memorial Day, recover from Blues and Brews, and relax with fellow beer drinkers and music lovers at Marble. But now it’s time to get back to business. A lot of beer was consumed in the Albuquerque area last week, so local breweries are finding that they have more space to bring new beers on tap. Il Vicino has a new Peach Wheat on tap and Marble will have two new offerings starting on Friday, while Chama River, Nexus, and La Cumbre have new beers brewing that will be ready in a week or two. The 505 Five is sold out in most locations, but there are still a few styles that survived Sunday’s mass tastings. If you haven’t tried them yet, I suggest you catch them before they are gone as well. Up in Rio Rancho, Turtle Mountain has several new offerings on tap in preparation of Summerfest in the Pajarito Mountains (near Los Alamos) this Saturday. If you can’t get away from town for the festival, you can always stop by Turtle Mountain and try some great beer in the city. With this in mind, here is all the news that is fit to blog for the week of May 28.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number (all are area code 505, for out-of-state readers) and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week. And for those breweries that play host to musicians, I made sure to list who’s on the week’s set list.
ABQ Brew Pub — 884-1116
(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–midnight, Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–midnight)
Beers: Ben Miller’s Dark and Strong. Still on tap this week at the ABQ Brew Pub is this Belgian style created by homebrewer Ben Miller. Check this one out and look for other Ben Miller brews under the Herbal Joe label.
Bad Ass Brewery — 918-2337
(Mon–Thurs 4 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Fri–Sat 3 p.m.–midnight, Sun noon–8 p.m.)
Beers: English Brown, Oatmeal Stout, Utter Insanity Pale Ale. B.A.B has been cranking out a lot of new beers recently. Now is the time to catch something new. I tend to like their darker beers, so I am looking forward to dropping by and getting a glass of the new Oatmeal Stout.
Broken Bottle Brewery — 890-8777
(Mon–Fri 4 p.m.–midnight, Sat noon–midnight, Sun noon–10 p.m.)
Beers: Smoked Stout. The brew crew has been frequenting B.B. fairly often since they opened last month. Now that we’ve tried everything on tap (multiple times), we are look forward to the new Smoked Stout to be released this weekend!
News: Also on the way within the next two weeks is the Nacho Brau made with blue corn. And don’t forget about Broken Bottle’s new happy hour, featuring one-dollar-off pints from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Chama River Brewing Company — 342-1800
(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)
Beers: There are no new beers at this time, but with two of their beers sold out this week, expect new styles on tap very soon.
Il Vicino Brewing Canteen — 881-2737
(Sun–Thurs noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–midnight)
Beers: Peach Wheat. No one in the Crew has had a chance to try out the Peach Wheat yet. If you get to try it before we come down, drop us a line and tell us what you think.
News: Amarillo IPA is on tap for Cask Wednesday. Also, keep in mind that Il Vicino will be playing host to its own beer festival June 16. Il Vicino has been stockpiling kegs of all of their creations for the past few years and will unleash about 30 different styles of beer in the upcoming festival. The festival will be from noon to 8 p.m. and includes bands, vendors, and food carts. Due to capacity limitations, only about 650 tickets will be sold, so be sure to get yours as soon as possible.
Music: Tues — Tumbleweeds 6-9 p.m., Sun — Three String Bale 3-6 p.m.
La Cumbre Brewing — 872-0225
(Open every day at noon)
Beers: Pale 32 (low gravity ale), Miles from Cologne (Kolsch). For a unique beer-drinking experience, try the Miles from Cologne. This beer was created in the traditional German Kolsch style, and it will be served in the traditional fashion in 7 oz. glasses. A new beer will be brought to you when your current one is half empty. Place a coaster on your beer when you have had your last beer. Limit 12 beers.
Music: Weds — The Gregg Daigle Band 6-9 p.m., Sat — The Square-1 Quintet 7-10 p.m.
Marble Brewery — 243-2739
(Mon–Sat 1 p.m.–midnight, Sun 1 p.m.–10:30 p.m.)
Beers: From the Wood, Imperial Red, Rye PA. The Imperial Red is a Marble favorite and it is back on tap starting this Friday. While at Marble, check out the Rye Pale Ale brewed with the house Belgian Ale yeast strain and Centennial Hops. I had the pleasure of trying From the Wood on Monday. This dark Belgian beer is for the adventurous types, bringing a sweet taste with hints of figs and bourbon.

(Mon–Thurs 2 p.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sun 11 a.m.–midnight)
Beers: Beam Me Up Scottish, Zaragoza
News: Look for the return of the award-winning Imperial Cream Stout in coming weeks.
Tractor Brewing Company — 433-5654 (Nob Hill Taproom)
(The Taproom opens most days around 3 p.m. and stays open as late as 2 a.m.; it opens earlier on weekends)
Beers: Witty (Belgian Wit), Pilsner, Maibock.
Turtle Mountain Brewing Company — 994-9497
(Kitchen hours: Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m.)
Beers: 70/70, Wild Bill Hickock’s Oatmeal IPA, Arsenal Porter. With an Original Gravity of 1.070, the 70/70 is first in a series of new beers brought to you by Turtle Mountain. Enjoy the 70/70 and then go back to Turtle Mountain in the coming months to sample the 80/80 and the 90/90. Stoutmeister had a chance to try the Arsenal Porter last weekend and says it is “one of the finest strong Baltic-style porters in the metro area.” He recommends anybody suffering from dark beer withdrawal make the trip out to Rio Rancho as soon as possible.
News: Turtle Mountain will be among the breweries at Summerfest in Pajarito (near Los Alamos) on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. We will have more about Summerfest later this week.
