Greetings, New Mexico beer fans!  As part of the series of posts reflecting on 2014 and looking forward to 2015, we’re going to give you the latest scoop on the Los Alamos Beer Co-op (LABC).

As many of you already know, the LABC is an organization dedicated to opening up a brewery and taproom in the town of Los Alamos, nestled near the Jemez Mountains northwest of Santa Fe. Los Alamos is known for its national laboratory, and a respectable number of the employees there are beer aficionados. With so many other microbreweries popping up all over, it’s only natural that Los Alamos should get one, too.

2014 was a big year for the fledgling effort. Thanks to the hard work of the LABC Board of Directors and others, some major milestones were achieved: brewing equipment was purchased (from Bosque Brewing), a location was selected, and major renovations have begun. By the end of the year, they began the search for a head brewer and other staff. (Time is running out to apply for the head brewer and general manager positions, so if you’re interested, get in touch with the LABC as soon as possible.) A member loan program ran throughout the year, securing much-needed additional funds. Several social events were sponsored throughout the year, as well. The membership list grew to over 400 people. The groundwork was laid for an early opening in 2015.

With 2015 underway, the current target for an opening date is spring. Major details remain to be ironed out, of course; the entire staff still needs to be hired and renovations need to be completed. Once finished, the current board is looking forward to transitioning from a working board to one that’s mainly involved in oversight. As Micheline Devaurs, the president of the board, said, “It is critical that we make these transitions since the board has worked hard for several years, and we all have full-time jobs. We need to transition to individuals who can run the brewery as a full-time job.” As someone who has seen first-hand the amount of work that’s been involved the last several years, I can sympathize!

The immediate goals are to start brewing great beer and open the doors to the public.  After that, there are plans to have entertainment in the good-sized space. A patio adjoining the building will be installed, which will be a great spot once the weather warms. There are food options nearby (including pizza, sandwiches, and Mexican), but a dining menu will also eventually be considered. Being a co-op, the organization is always ready to listen to the demands of its members.

Here’s to a blog post about the grand opening in the near future!
