Breweries will return to takeout only starting Monday after new public health order issued

We are all going back to getting our beers to-go, with growlers the preferred means of taking them home at most breweries.

The news on Friday afternoon was expected, but still crushing for businesses across New Mexico. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced new restrictions in the latest update to the public health order.

Starting Monday and running through November 30, all non-essential businesses, including breweries, will go back to takeout only for beer and/or food. The governor wants all people to shelter in place, and for all non-essential businesses to reduce their workforce significantly. Citizens should only leave for food, medicine, and other health-related issues.

“We are in a life-or-death situation and if we don’t act right now, we can’t preserve the lives, we can’t save the lives,” she said in an online broadcast.

There were a record 1,753 new positive cases announced Thursday. In the last month, there has been a 214-percent increase in hospitalizations, and in the last two weeks a 143-percent increase in deaths.

Breweries that serve food will be allowed to do curbside pickup, but alcohol can only be sold inside or on the patio, per state law. With the ongoing aluminum can shortage, please consider bringing in your glass growlers for a refill where allowed (check with each brewery before you take it along), and if you have a kegerator setup, fill those now.

As the breweries make their decisions as to how to handle another round of to-go-only, we will update this story throughout the day and the weekend.
