The Week Ahead in Beer: A little lavender escape from the unrelenting heat

Stoutmeister will have you covered for all things new in beer and brewery events every week.

We don’t need to tell you that this heat is just downright obnoxious at this point, so normally we would not be recommending doing anything outside unless you’re in the shade with a pint in hand on a brewery patio somewhere. But, for one exception, we will humbly suggest a Sunday visit to the Lavender in the Village Festival, held at Hartnett Park in Los Ranchos from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Steel Bender and Hops Brewery will both be on hand along with about 100 other vendors at what just might be the best-smelling festival in town. If you cannot make it out (or just do not want to be outdoors right now), pop over to Steel Bender on Saturday, where they will have a cask of Hwy 47 Honey Double Blonde Ale with lavender added to the beer.

New Draft:

Bosque has tapped a Hefeweizen at the Westside and Las Cruces Telshor locations, and it should be popping up at the other taprooms soon. Boxing Bear brought back The Red Glove Double Red Ale on tap only. Canteen keeps things light with Apricot Wheat. Differential tapped Blood Orange Cream Ale. High and Dry rolled out Kiwi Nuggets (IPA), Ghost Root (Sour), Sick Sense (Light Lager), Sovereign Immunity (Hazy IPA), and Call Me Mr. Flinstone (Tangerine Vanilla Sour). Marble wins best beer name of the week with Noah Sleep ‘Til Burque, a German-inspired ale. Tractor brought back Sub Zero Hazy IPA. (UPDATES) Boxing Bear tapped its 9th Anniversary IPA. Gravity Bound sings along with Talking Heads, a new hazy pale ale featuring the Neomexicanus hop variety Multi-Head. La Cumbre tapped a new batch of Green Cap (Belgian Abbey Single). Sidetrack brought back Mild Davis. Turtle Mountain unveils three new beers with Emberfall (IPA), Sierra Nativo (Burqueno Pale Ale), and Run the (Baltic) Porter.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street tapped a British Mild.

New Package:

La Cumbre will roll out Cactus Shack Hazy IPA in cans and on draft this Friday. (UPDATES) Downshift added Beach Season Hazy IPA in cans and on draft. Ex Novo brought back Bedrock Push Pop, made with mango, lactose, and vanilla, in cans and on draft, and then released V for Vienna in cans and on draft. Harmon Lane has Tin Cup Stout, which won our Stout Challenge in February, back in cans.

Notable Events:

Friday — Bosque Heights is hosting a Pet Adoption Day starting at 3 p.m.

Magic & Comedy Night takes over Tractor Wells Park at 8 p.m.

Saturday — Public House 28 will host the second round of the New Mexico IPA Challenge from 2 to 4 p.m. in between Las Cruces and Anthony. We will have a quick preview article later this week that will include driving directions.

Bosque recently opened a new location, The Drinkery, in Santa Fe. Located at 4980 Promenade Blvd, just off Cerrillos and Wellness Way, it will not have a kitchen, but neighboring Dion’s will bring food to your table.

Casa Vieja Brewery — Featured seasonal: Tripel Threat, a hefty Belgian-style brew.

Differential Brewing — Featured seasonal: Cinnamon Apple Wheat (5.1% ABV, 26 IBU) is basically that one breakfast cereal transformed into a beer.

Downshift Brewing at Outpost 1706 — Featured seasonal: Gratitude Session IPA (4.2% ABV, 40 IBU), brewed to support local charities, right now $1 from every pint sold goes to the Shelter Fund of the Community Foundation of Lincoln County.

Echoes Brewery — Featured seasonal: Echoes IPA has now been joined by the one of the other core beers, a coconut coffee stout. A pilsner and an American pale ale are on deck.

Ex Novo Brewing — Featured seasonal: But it’s a Dry Heat, a Mexican lager with lime and salt, available in cans and on draft for a limited time.

Tractor Brewing Company — Featured seasonal: Munich Helles 9 (5.1% ABV, 29 IBU), is described by the brewery as being “named for the 9 bags of Pilsner Malt and 9 pounds of hops used in the recipe, (it) is a smooth and refreshing lager brewed strictly with German malt for a crisp, clean taste. With its golden color and subtle sweetness, this beer is the perfect accompaniment to any occasion. Prost!”

Turquoise Trail Brewing — The brewery is closed at its original location, and is aiming to reopen out in Moriarty. We will have more on this move when they’re closer to opening.

Turtle Mountain Brewing Company — Featured seasonal: Sierra Nativo (6.9% ABV, 88 IBU), a new “Burqueno” pale ale made with Zappa (Neomexicanus) and Cascade hops.

Roasted grains are well balanced with base malts and just enough hops to offset any residual sweetness. Add in some coffee from Steam and it’s winter in a glass.”

Sierra Blanca Brewing  — Featured seasonal: Cherry Wheat, a three-time GABF medal winner that is perfect for summer nights in the beer garden.
