We have come a long way, added more members, and more facial hair, since we started writing about beer in 2012.

A little while back, well, five stories ago, we hit our 1,000th post here on this site. There was no celebration or anything, but it was a bit of a milestone. We have written a lot about beer the last four-plus years, and we plan to keep this thing going as long as we are able to devote the necessary time and energy, and as long as all of you keep drinking and reading. Thanks, everyone, from the brewery staffs to their customers, for making it all possible.

Now, all that being said, we have a whole lotta news items to get to, much of which pertains to this weekend.

Get your collaboration on

Quarter Celtic brewer Brady McKeown told us that he had a collaboration beer on deck a little while ago. Then, long after The Week Ahead in Beer was published, he remembered to let us know that today (Friday) will mark the debut of this new creation. Quarter Celtic and Chama River brewed up a Belgian Strong Ale that checks in at 11-percent ABV and 30 IBU. It will be available on tap at both locations all day today and then until the supply runs out.

Make sure to head over to either place and order a pint. It is always a good thing to see our breweries collaborate. We need more collaborations, but they will only happen if the sales justify making them.

Also, don’t forget that today features $3 pints of Oktoberfest over at the Santa Fe Brewing taproom at Green Jeans. And conveniently, SFBC is located in between Chama and QC!

Toast of ABQ beer lists

Five local breweries are participating in the Taste & Toast of ABQ at Uptown on Saturday. The event costs $20 per person and gets you 10 samples from participating restaurants, vendors, and breweries. Ultimately they want you to buy pints, so make sure to support the breweries this way. It’s OK, because the food lineup is potentially tremendous. Local favorites like Artichoke Cafe and Cocina Azul will be there, along with Chocolate Cartel, Villa Myriam Coffee Roasters, and Uptown-based restaurants like Elephant Bar and Marcello’s. The whole thing is a fundraiser for charity, too.

Over on the Toast side, there will also be a couple wineries and Broken Trail will have their spirits available. Here are the brewery beer lists, or at least those who provided theirs (if the others send us their lists, we will update).

  • Kaktus: Helles Lager, Scotch Ale, Honk Ale, and one more TBD
  • La Cumbre: TBA
  • Marble: Double White, IPA, Pilsner, Red Light Lager, Galaxy Pale Ale

The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. You can purchase tickets online in advance.

Brewery space available

Speaking of Villa Myriam, they recently outgrew their original business space at 2420 Midtown Place. Thus, the real estate agent looking for a new tenant sent us an email asking if we knew of any new breweries looking for a location. (Yes, we were surprised at this, but why not share it?)

It is about 4,800 square feet, occupying Suites F and G. There are already floor drains, cold storage, a drive-in bay, and more. Anyone interested can contact Riley McKee at Maestas & Ward at (505) 878-0001.

And another anniversary

Lizard Tail turns two this weekend, an anniversary we almost missed. They will be celebrating all day Saturday. The Black House Angels will provide the music at 8 p.m. Beyond that, we would suggest anyone interested contact the brewery for more details.

Beer festival news

There are two major upcoming beer festivals with Hopfest set for Isleta Casino on Aug. 27 and then the Mountain West Brewfest returning to Bernalillo on Sept. 3-4.

For the latter, they released their list of attending breweries. MWBF is no longer associated with the NM Brewers Guild, and thus, the lineup is missing some major names. Who is scheduled to be there? Albuquerque Brewing, Bosque, Canteen, Enchanted Circle, Firkin, Kaktus, Palmer, Ponderosa, Rio Bravo, Sandia Chile Grill, Santa Fe, Starr Brothers, and The 377 Brewery are planning on attending.

So who is not there? Well, the big ones are obviously Boxing Bear, Chama River, La Cumbre, Marble, Nexus, Quarter Celtic, Red Door, Tractor, and Turtle Mountain from the ABQ metro area, plus Bathtub Row, Blue Corn, Duel, Second Street, and Taos Mesa from outside the metro area (as breweries that frequently attend fests). This will give some of the less-well-known breweries a chance to strut their stuff, plus newcomers like Enchanted Circle (which opened in Angel Fire in April) and the forthcoming 377 figure to draw long lines of curious folks.

Still, it is a bit of a disappointment in how many breweries bailed out on what was once promised as the largest beer festival in NM history.

Meanwhile, the actual largest, Hopfest, is adding a new feature this year. The Brewers Guild Sensory Analysis Seminar will be hosted by our friend Angelo Orona of Craft King Consulting. This half-hour course will take place at Hopfest at 3:30 p.m. (the whole event is 2-6) It will cost an extra $10, and tickets are limited, but they will benefit the Guild and our breweries. You will get a thorough overview of beer styles and flavors, plus you will get to see what an off-flavor kit can do to beers so you can better understand what you should and should not be tasting. You will get a special sample of Sierra Blanca Whiskey Barrel-Aged Stout and a commemorative 13-ounce glass.

New breweries update

Here is the latest news on the breweries that are coming to New Mexico in the next few months. Those without a city/town listed are in ABQ. We only included breweries that have officially applied for a small brewer license.

  • Ale Republic (Cedar Crest): They reported on Facebook that they have all five Bernalillo County permits. Now they just await their small brewer license and a health permit. They are also hiring servers, so contact zach@alerepublic.com.
  • Bombs Away Beer Co.: We still know nothing about this brewery beyond the name on the application. Anyone out there got info?
  • Colfax Ale Cellar (Raton): Here is a link to our recent update on Raton’s first brewery.
  • Dialogue Brewing: They have a ton of construction photos on Facebook right now, so progress is continuing. There is no set opening date yet (probably a smart thing).
  • Drafty Kilt Brewing: They officially changed the name (it was OffKilter, but that was already taken). By the pictures on Facebook, it looks like their final construction is near completion. We project a fall opening.
  • Flix Brewhouse: Construction continues on the West Side movie theater with a brewery. They said on social media the plan is to be open in December. Looks like we know where we will be watching Rogue One.
  • Hops Brewery: They have one license active and another pending. We are not sure what any of that means. We are also totally unsure of their progress. Anyone out there hear about them?
  • Rowley Farmhouse Ales (Santa Fe): Construction is all but over, just a few little aesthetic touches remain. They hope to be open later this month. Once he gets back from his vacation in San Diego, Luke will be on the case. (And yes, SFBC does allow Luke to go on vacation; of course he picked a beer town to visit, thus reinforcing the fact that his girlfriend is a wonderful human being.)
  • Sleeping Dog Tavern (Santa Fe): We still do not know much about this plan for the tavern to start brewing its own beer.
  • Steel Bender Brewyard: Contact has been made with the owners, who have hired a notable local brewer to run the show. We should have more news on this North Valley project in the next couple of weeks.
  • The 377 Brewery: Their brewer told us that the build out is nearly complete, now they just await all the permits and licenses. It will still be a while before they are open.

Sample tray

  • There will be a special Stone tasting at Jubilation today (Friday) from 4 to 6 p.m. Rather than more of the usual offerings, they will be featuring Mocha IPA, Citrusy Wit, Wussie Pils, Enjoy After 7/4 Brett IPA, and the 20th Anniversary Citracado IPA, which was made with Citra hops and avocado honey. That looks … different.
  • John Bullard has brewed up a new batch of his award-winning IPA, Scale Tipper. Look for it on tap and in 22-ounce bombers in a few weeks at all Bosque locations.
  • The 2016 Doggie Dash and Dawdle Kickoff Party will be at Boxing Bear on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can register for the Dash, enjoy some live music, and $1 from every pint sold goes to Animal Humane. If you lack a furry friend for the Dash, fear not, they will have mobile adoptions there as well!
  • Fill in the Blanco IPA, a white wheat hoppy beast, was added to the seasonal lineup at Canteen on Thursday. Meanwhile, over at La Cumbre today (Friday), they have Red Ryeot dry-hopped with Comet in the cask.
  • Speaking of La Cumbre, they will have another Lego Build-Off at the brewery on Tuesday. Sign up starting at 6:15 p.m. and it all gets underway at 7. The winners get $10 gift certificates.
  • Ponderosa has their fourth head brewer in place. Antonio Fernandez has taken over the operation from Bob Haggerty. We will try to set up an interview with Antonio in the near future and we will also update you on where Bob is headed. (Fear not, he is not going far.)
  • Starr Brothers will open at 8 a.m. this Saturday to show all the opening matches of the Premier League season. You might just see some Crew members and our friends over there. I’ll be the guy bitterly ruing Newcastle’s relegation all season.

And we are off! The preliminary round of the 2016 New Mexico IPA Challenge is complete, with 16 15 breweries advancing to the three main rounds that will begin next weekend at Santa Fe Brewing. This came out of the 28 beers that were sampled in a blind taste test Saturday afternoon at Rio Bravo.

Editor’s note: We have been updated by the Guild that Rio Bravo does not advance.

Were there surprises? Of course, both in some of the breweries that scored well and in some that did not. One of the new wrinkles in NMIPAC is that the three host breweries — Santa Fe, 3 Rivers, Tractor — were guaranteed to advance no matter their voting totals. In the end, only the first needed that bye to advance, as 3 Rivers (nine votes) and Tractor (seven votes) would have qualified regardless.

Every brewery that was eliminated garnered less than seven votes. Those are, with voting totals included, Bathtub Row (4), Cazuela’s (1), Chama River (2), Enchanted Circle (2), Kaktus (2), Little Toad Creek (4), Lizard Tail (3), Marble (6), Rio Bravo (3), Roosevelt (4), Sierra Blanca (6), Spotted Dog (1), and Turtle Mountain (2). While some of those breweries are newer or in more remote locations, seeing big names like Chama, Marble, Sierra Blanca, and Turtle were all surprising.

The advancing breweries, including the hosts, are Blue Corn (10), Bosque (13), Boxing Bear (33), Canteen (33), Chili Line (10), La Cumbre (13), Quarter Celtic (24), Red Door (7), Santa Fe (3), Second Street (7), Sidetrack (7), Starr Brothers (17), Taos Mesa (13), 3 Rivers (9), and Tractor (7). In terms of the two trays, numbered 1-14 and 15-28, the leaders were Boxing Bear and Canteen for the first tray and Quarter Celtic for the second tray. It was nice to see some of the newcomers, all of whom opened this year, make the final cut in Chili Line, Quarter Celtic, Sidetrack, and Starr Brothers.

In the interest of full disclosure, Brandon had the first tray and picked Canteen. I had the second tray and picked Starr Brothers, though it was close between their offering and Quarter Celtic.

The next round of NMIPAC will be Saturday, July 16, at Santa Fe, followed by a stop at 3 Rivers in Farmington on July 20, and the grand finale at Tractor Wells Park on July 23. Luke will have the SFBC stop covered for us, and the rest of the Crew will see you all at Wells Park.

One IPA to rule them all!

The announcement went out on Tuesday, and hopheads across the state rejoiced, for the New Mexico IPA Challenge is returning to the land. Now 28 breweries will do battle, as all seek to remove the three-time king, John Bullard, from his iron throne.

OK, fine, it is a bit of Game of Thrones there, but that is the theme this year, said NM Brewers Guild director John Gozigian. We met for some pints and a good old information download at Bosque Brewing on Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re kind of running with a Game of Thrones theme,” John said. “It all makes sense. The brewing community in New Mexico is kind of incestuous, it really is. Everybody’s worked here and there. All the houses have been mixed, kind of, so it kind of lends itself to that.

“You’ve got a guy like John Bullard who’s won it three years in a row for two different breweries. He’s the guy that everybody wants to dethrone. You’ve got all these usurpers out there that would love nothing better than to make him pay.”

Bullard has won three in a row, the last two at Bosque and two before that Blue Corn. His title defense starts on Saturday, July 9, at Rio Bravo for the preliminary round. After that, the scoring rounds will be at Santa Fe Brewing on July 16, at Three Rivers Brewery in Farmington on July 16, and the grand finale will be at Tractor Wells Park on July 23.

The other 27 combatants who will face off with Bosque are, deep breath, as follows (* = confirmed first-time participant): Bathtub Row, Blue Corn, Boxing Bear, Canteen, Cazuela’s, Chama River, Chili Line*, Enchanted Circle*, Kaktus, La Cumbre, Little Toad Creek, Lizard Tail, Marble, Quarter Celtic*, Red Door, Rio Bravo*, Roosevelt, Santa Fe, Second Street, Sidetrack*, Sierra Blanca, Spotted Dog, Starr Brothers*, Taos Mesa, Three Rivers, Tractor, Turtle Mountain

Last year there were 23 participants, so to get to 28 is immense in and of itself. Rather than copy the same format as the VIPA Challenge, there will instead be a new format for the opening round at Rio Bravo.

“It’s going to be a little different though it’s going to accomplish the same end,” John said. “Last year was the first time that we had to winnow the field down to a manageable amount of beers to take on the road, so attendees at the subsequent stops got all of them in one sitting.

“We capped it this year at 28 breweries. They can only enter one beer. It all goes back to the lunch lady trays that we’ve always used. You can fit 14 of those plastic tumblers on one of those trays. You can fit 2-to-3 ounces in there, a big enough sample where you can reasonably evaluate the beer. So, that limits it to 14 in a flight. Plus, given the quantity of each one, you can’t go less than 2 ounces, so that ends up (28) ounces of beer per flight, plus you get the complimentary pint. We don’t want people to over-consume.”

The format now will feature two separate trays, labeled A and B. One will have beers numbered one through 14, the other 15 through 28. Each attendee will only receive one of the two trays, and will rank the beers on his/her tray only. An equal number of the two trays will be distributed so all beers will have an equal chance, regardless of which tray they are on.

“We’re going to be smart, the ones that have done well in the past, they’re not going to all be on one flight,” John said. “They’re going to be spread out in a way that makes sense. We’re going to take the top 12 to 14 out of that first round at Rio Bravo and then take those to the next stops.”

Yes, you and your best friend/significant other/old drinking buddy can each get a different tray and sample from the other, but you can only vote for one. Basically, drink up as much as you want off your tray first for proper voting, then, if your palate can take it, try from the other tray.

“So, the first one is going to be fun,” John said. “That’s where we get the field down to where it’s supposed to be. Even with 28, there’s going to be some good IPAs that get left behind. There are a lot of good IPAs out there now. For sure, those top 12 or 14, they’re going to be some great beers.”

Tickets for all four rounds are now on sale online, and paper tickets will begin appearing at the breweries (full list TBA) in the next couple of weeks.

Get them early this year. Even as big as Rio Bravo is, and Tractor WP will be (they are going to close the front parking lot along 4th for additional capacity), there will be ticket caps. This should be the biggest NMIPAC ever, both in terms of participating breweries and attendees.

After the opening round, the remaining rounds should be what you have come to expect, 12 to 14 beers numbered on a tray for a proper blind tasting. As attendance outside of Albuquerque has always lagged behind, the folks at Three Rivers are trying something new this year to get their numbers on par with at least Santa Fe.

“Actually, those guys are going to try to get people from Durango,” John said. “They’re going to put up posters at the breweries in Durango. I hope we get some attendance from there because, I think New Mexico’s beers, especially the IPAs, are well enough known now, at least in our neighboring states, it’ll be worth the 30-mile trip for somebody from Durango to come check out. Especially when we have gold medal winners and National IPA Challenge winners all submitting beers.”

Start doing your hop homework people. Prep those palates, get your ticket(s), and the Crew will see many of you at Rio Bravo and/or Tractor sooner than later.

Another successful year on the Dark Side.

Another successful year on the Dark Side.

The Dark Side Brew Crew gathered on Super Bowl Sunday for the fifth straight year to hold a blind taste test to determine the best house stout in the Albuquerque metro area.

And for a fifth straight year, we had a different winner. So who was it?

Well, rather than keep everyone in suspense, here was the full list of 14 beers (we thought we would have 15, but it turns out Kaktus’ Nob Hill taproom was closed Sunday, so we could not get theirs). The beers were graded on a 0-5 scale in four categories — aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, finish. The voting Brew Crew members were myself, Franz Solo, Mrs. Solo (our hosts), Brandon, and Kristin. Shilling, sadly, had to work, while E-Rock was playing music in Florida and Porter Pounder was on a boat with a bunch of metalheads and metal bands. The rest of the Bullpen was unavailable as well.

From the lowest rated to the highest, here we go.

14. Rio Bravo Black Angus Stout (16 points): This was … not good. Last year: NA

13. Sidetrack Dark Engine Stout (24.5 points): They’re new, so we will cut them some slack. Still, more malts for a stout are a good thing. Last year: NA

12. Albuquerque Brewing Handlebar Stout (30.5 points): New brewer, so give him time. It wasn’t very carbonated, for one thing. It struck us more as a brown ale than a stout. Last year: NA

11. Canteen Dark & Lusty Stout (41.5 points): This was the 2015 version of “are you kidding me? It’s that low?!” There just wasn’t much flavor or mouthfeel or really anything with this batch. We have a feeling that Zach will be tinkering with this beer. Last year: 2nd

10. Lizard Tail Oatmeal Stout (42.5 points): At least we got the right variety of stout this year, but it was just a bit thin on all accounts, including aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, etc. Last year: 13th for their rye stout

9. Turtle Mountain Stauffenberg Stout (46.5 points): Kinda average all around, but perfectly drinkable. Last year: 11th

8. Marble Oatmeal Stout (47 points): Last year the batch was contaminated by an unclean growler. This time around, the growler was fine, but the beer was … average. Last year: 14th

7. La Cumbre Malpais Stout (60.5 points): In a sea of oatmeal stouts, a foreign export stout certainly stands out. I guess it also proves we’re more biased to the oamteals, or something like that. Last year: 6th

6. Ponderosa Zaftig Oatmeal Stout (64.5 points): Some of us found this one pretty middle-of-the-road, others enjoyed it quite a bit more. A pretty solid representation of the style. Last year: NA

5. Tractor Double Plow Oatmeal Stout (67 points): This batch could not quite reach the heights of 2014’s “cookie dough” batch that took home the title. It still remains one of their best and most consistent brews. Last year: 4th

4. Cazuela’s Beer For My Horses (74 points): We all found this one kind of mean, almost leaning closer to a foreign export than a traditional oatmeal stout. Everyone picked up on a star anise aroma/flavor, which worked for some, not for others. Last year: 7th

3. Boxing Bear Standing 8 Stout (77.5 points): Last year’s winner came up just short this time around. It is still one of the finest regular stouts on tap around town. Last year: 1st

2. Bosque Driftwood Oatmeal Stout (84.5 points): Brewer John Bullard told us he was going to change up the recipe. We’re assuming he did just that, because this was rather wonderful. Last year: 12th

1. Chama River Sleeping Dog Stout (88.5 points): A while back a brewer from another brewery told me that this was the best local stout. Well, he was right. The only question, do we congratulate current brewer Andrew Krosche or former brewer Zach Guilmette? Or both? Heck, both of you, revel in this one! Last year: 10th

We’ll be missing a couple of these smiling faces this year, but we’ll still have plenty of stout.

Super Bowl Sunday is almost upon us once again, and while folks will pick between the old (Denver and Peyton) and the new (Carolina and Cam), all of us in the Crew will choose something even more important. Namely, who has the best stout in the ABQ metro area.

As we have done four times before, we will hold a blind taste test of the best regular or “house” stouts. Be they oatmeal, foreign export, American, or even cream/milk stouts, these are the ones available (almost) year round, their darkness calling to us whether it’s warm or cold outside.

Every year the Stout Challenge gets a little bigger with more and more breweries opening. This year we project to have 15 stouts, one more than last year. There are a few stouts gone from last year’s 14 — Drunken Hobo Milk Stout (Broken Bottle, which closed), Dry Stout (Nexus, unavailable this year), KC’s Traditional Irish Stout (Twisted Chile, unavailable this year). Those stouts finished ninth, fifth, and third last year, so they will be missed. Here is this year’s projected lineup, with last year’s finish in parentheses.

Assuming are available, we will face quite the challenge this year. Part of that has to do with only six of us being available to drink these obsidian elixirs. Porter Pounder is on a cruise ship with heavy metal bands (no, really, he is), E-Rock is playing music on the other side of the country, and Kristin is the only member of the Bullpen who can make it over Sunday. That leaves her, plus yours truly, Brandon, Shilling (he lives!), Franz Solo, and Mrs. Solo. If anyone asks why we’re going to mostly only fill half-growlers, well, now you know why.

As we have done in the past, it will be a blind taste test. We rank the stouts on a point system in different categories, then total up the scores.

This could be the first year we have a repeat winner, or even a second-time winner, or perhaps someone different will take the fifth crown. To recap the previous years’ winners:

A lot of things have occupied the space where Lizard Tail currently resides, but few have been as overwhelmingly successful. Owner Dan Berry spoke with me over a delicious tasting flight, telling me that they were actually surprised at how well received their beer and location have been since opening in this space back in August 2014.

Because of their smaller brewing capabilities at the location, some of the beers have been selling so fast that it is as excellent as it is tough for them. Their Irish Red outsold their IPA, which meant they had to really increase the amounts of certain types of beer. For a small location, though, they’re boasting a hefty 15 available on tap beers at the moment.

Dan said 2016 will be a great year for them to grow. They’ll be looking at larger brewery spaces to expand their production and gear and become more of a proper brewery in Albuquerque. Plus, some of the upcoming beers they will have available sound amazing, such as a Belgian Strong Dark, which I’ve always been a fan of, a Session IPA, and a Tripel. As strong as the Dubbel is already, I’m excited to see how their other Belgian-influenced selections fare.

Plus, as any good business does, they really listen to their customers and you can expect to see a Hefe and a Saison being added in rotation this year, also, as per their most common requests of something to make.

Dan was awfully busy the day I visited, so the Crew will have to check back with Lizard Tail in the near future for further details.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s four breweries and a pair of newcomers, one down in Socorro and the other in Los Alamos, also joining the party.

As more and more breweries keep opening around this wonderful state of ours, this weekly column keeps getting bigger and bigger. On average, it now has more than 5,000 words per week. In an effort to get things back under control for a bit, I am going to streamline it all to a degree. Fear not, the most important thing below — what is on tap at each brewery — will not change. Rather than go into multiple mini beer descriptions, each entry will describe one highlighted beer per edition. Most of the time it will be the newest beer on tap. Beyond that, you will now see Live Music as an entry, plus Other Events for non-musical goings on, such as art competitions, poetry contests, charitable endeavors, and so on. Where applicable, we will also post a link to the most recent story on said brewery where you can get more news. Hopefully in making this all a little less cluttered, we will all benefit.

Now that we can get back to regular business, there are four special beer release parties over the next four days. Rejoice. Or repent. Your choice. First up, tonight (Wednesday) marks the return of Marble’s awesome Imperial Stout. They only bottled 1,000 of ’em, plus what’s on tap, so it will go fast. Enjoy a special, secret pairing from Rustic Food Truck downtown from 5 p.m. until supplies run out. Then on Thursday, head to Red Door for the return of the Strong Scotch Ale. All pours are $3.50 all day. Friday marks the debut of Brass Monkey, a chocolate orange stout, at Tractor Wells Park (Beer Farmer Co-op members can get a sneak preview tasting Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Wells Park if they RSVP to jeremy@getplowed.com). Then on Saturday, Boese Brothers unveils Double Dead Red, which comes with a special food pairing from Gold Street Caffe of red chile-rubbed chicken tenders and sweet potato fries.

On the new beer front this week, beyond those, Albuquerque Brewing has a Dunkelweizen. Pank Dank!, a fruit-infused American wheat, is at Bosque. Rye PA and Dark American Lager are back at Canteen. An epic Imperial Stout, Zach’s parting gift to Chama River, is available. Winterfest Marzen debuts at Rio Bravo.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street has a fresh batch of Railrunner Pale Ale. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row sent us their first update in a while. Needless to say, there are many new beers on tap, including Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, Juniper Pale Ale, Hindsight Doppelbock, Asian White IPA, and two old returning favorites in the Red Hammer Ale and Big House Belgo.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s four breweries and a pair of newcomers, one down in Socorro and the other in Los Alamos, also joining the party.

During the winter, seasonal beer releases tend to follow rapidly one after another. A few special ones are not just on tap, but in bombers. While we are all used to places like La Cumbre, Marble, and recently Bosque having those, now Boxing Bear is joining the party. First came their award-winning Chocolate Milk Stout, this week comes their hoptastic Sucker Punch Double IPA. The last time Justin Hamilton and his staff brewed up this monster, it checked in at 8.5-percent ABV and 125 IBU. They will have it on tap and for sale at the brewery from 5 to 9 p.m. this Thursday. Champions Club members will receive a Sucker Punch logo pint glass with the purchase of a bomber or pint (one per member). Boxing Bear will also be giving away Sucker Punch T-shirts and pint glasses via Facebook. Do not fret, Franz Solo is at work until 9 that night, so you will not have to fear him bowling you over to get to the first bomber.

There a few other new beers being released this week, though all are on tap only. Bosque is feeling uncommon with the Railyard Rust California Common. Sasquatch Scotch is back at Canteen. Distillery 365 has the new Happenstance All-Day Blonde (we will have more on this beer later). Kaktus has cranked out an Imperial Stout. Speaking of big beers, La Roja Grande is on tap at La Cumbre. In case you missed it New Year’s Day, there is still some El Mysterio left at Marble West Side. In the old favorites department, Arsenal Porter is back at Turtle Mountain for a limited time.

Up in Santa Fe, Gulden Woelf is howling at Blue Corn. Second Street has tapped LVL Stout, Equinox IPA, and Chinook Pale Ale.

AmyO said these were the two specialty beers available when she made a recent visit to learn about the rebranding of ABQ Brew Pub into Alien Brew Pub (which is now complete). Albuquerque Brewing Co. — (505) 797-1842

Beers: High Plains Drifter Blonde, Dukes Pale Ale, G2 IPA, Off the Richter Red, Handlebars Stout, Brett Brown, Irish Red Ale. Welcome back, ABC. Their new brewer, Carnie (formerly of Santa Fe), sent us his updated list. Off the Richter Red is an imperial. The Handlebars is available on both CO2 and nitro. The most recent additions are the Irish Red and Brett Brown.

Events: ABC has a new happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, plus Sunday will have all-day happy hour prices.

Back Alley Draft House — (505) 766-8590

Beers: Honey Common, Latir Pale Lager, Berliner Weisse, Braggot, Lando’s Lager. There are four recent additions to the taps. The Latir is an old favorite, while the Honey Common is a sweet twist on the Cali Common. The Braggot is a beer-cider hybrid. Lando’s Lager honors the great Billy Dee Williams as a proper malt liquor.

Events: Sundays are Service Nights at Back Alley, with $2 off all beers for service industry workers. Bring your server’s ID and you will be rewarded. All beers are $1 off on Tuesdays.

Bistronomy B2B/Lobo Beast 101 — (505) 262-2222 (B2B), (505) 247-2116 (Lobo)

Beers: House IPA, Cherry Stout, Coconut Porter, Raz Wheat, Red Rye, Brown Ale, Rye Noon, Very Chai Christmas, Cerveza Chile Verde (B2B only), Galaxy Pale Ale (Lobo only), Pepper Saison (Lobo only). At long last, we have a list for B2B and their sister location, Lobo Beast. They rotate through beers quickly, so if you see one you have to try off this list, hurry over. As proof, the lineup shifted significantly in recent weeks. The freshest additions are the House IPA, Brown Ale, Very Chai Christmas, Cerveza Chile Verde, and Galaxy Pale Ale.

The Blue Grasshopper — (505) 896-8579

Beers: Beach Bum Pale Ale. The popular Beach Bum is back for another run. BG goes through their beers fast, so hurry out to try it. If you have not made it out there yet, the Grasshopper is located at 4500 Arrowhead Ridge Road in Rio Rancho, just off Highway 528.

Boese Brothers Brewery — (505) 382-7060

Beers: Patriot Porter, La Onza White Ale, Old Shonie Scottish Ale, Dr. Strangehop XPA, Duke City Lager, Burly Brown. The Patriot Porter (6% ABV) is a pre-Prohibition style of American porter, more brown than black with strong roasted flavors smoothed out by the nitro pour. La Onza (5.4% ABV) offers up a big, citrusy kick for a Belgian-style witbier. Old Shonie (4.5% ABV) is also available on nitro; it is lighter than most of the other Scottish beers in the ABQ area. The Dr. Strangehop XPA (6.5% ABV) offers up a wonderful mix of the piney Willamette and more floral Mosaic hops. The Duke City Lager (5% ABV) is now a permanent addition to the lineup. Ichabod’s Revenge (7.6% ABV) is a pumpkin ale made with a ton of real pumpkin baked by the staff. The Burly Brown (6.8% ABV, 72 IBU) is an India Brown/Cascadian style. They are down to the very last of their supply, so hurry over before it runs out.

Events: Boese will have a happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with $3 pints. You can also get $3 pints all day Tuesday and $6 growler fills all day Wednesday.

Beers: Jared’s Belgian Quad with cherries, Eldorado Pale Ale, Imperial Coffee Brown, Scale Tipper IPL, Dry Stout (on nitro at all locations, CO2 at Las Cruces only), Jingle Bell Bock (Nob Hill only), Citra S.M.A.S.H. (Las Cruces and San Mateo), Railyard Rust California Common (San Mateo and Nob Hill). All three Bosque locations are now up to date. The new Belgian ale series is underway with the decadent Jared’s Quad with cherries (10.3% ABV, 25 IBU). The Eldorado Pale Ale (6.4% ABV, 30 IBU) is a delicious, single-hop pale. The new Jingle Bell Bock (6.9% ABV, 20 IBU) is a sweet treat. The Imperial Coffee Brown (9% ABV, 20 IBU) is also for sale in bombers; we highly, highly recommend you pick up this one before it’s gone. You can still buy bombers of the barrel-aged Jet Black Winter (10.2% ABV) until the supply runs out. The newest additions are the Dry Stout (4.5% ABV, 20 IBU) and Scale Tipper IPL (6.1% ABV, 95 IBU), which is a lager using the Scale Tipper hops. The Citra S.M.A.S.H. is also now popping up at the different locations as tap space becomes available. Railyard Rust (5.2% ABV, 30 IBU) is back for another run.

Boxing Bear Brewing Company — (505) 897-2327

Beers: Body Slam Imperial Pilsner, Fist Pump Pumpkin Ale, Chocolate Milk Stout, Bear-El Aged Stout, Crystal S.M.A.S.H., Iron Lung Smoked Porter. Boxing Bear got into the barrel-aging game by taking some Standing 8 Stout and putting it in Pinot Noir barrels. Go try this rather different take on a barrel-aged offering while it lasts. The appropriately smoky Iron Lung is back for another run. The Chocolate Milk Stout (5.2% ABV, 20 IBU), a silver medal winner at GABF this fall, is still available for a limited time. You can expect it to go fast, again, so head over ASAP. Is also available on nitro while supplies last, plus now they have bottled it and bombers are for sale at the brewery and at Jubilation. Other available seasonals include the Body Slam (7.4% ABV, 60 IBU).

News: Every day at lunchtime (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), for just $10 you can get a pint and a panini of your choice.

Events: Geeks Who Drink will now be held every Wednesday from 8 to 10 p.m. at Boxing Bear.

Canteen Brewhouse — (505) 881-2737

(Sun–Thurs noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–midnight)

Beers: Cherry Blossom Wheat, Galaxy IPA, Aumbers Amber, Sasquatch Scotch, Sweet Sandarine Porter, Schwarzbier, Black Hops IPA, Panama Joe Coffee Stout. The Porter, Schwarzbier, Black Hops, and Panama Joe are all part of this year’s edition of Solstice Blackout. Get a sample tray of all five for $5 or you can purchase individual pints. The Crew visited recently and we all declared this batch of Panama Joe just as good as the one that medaled at the Great American Beer Festival in 2014. The Galaxy IPA (7.2% ABV, 80 IBU) will take you out of this world. The Cherry Blossom Wheat (4% ABV, 10 IBU) was made with 100-percent tart cherry puree, and it offers a nice break from the heavier beers on tap. The Aumbers (6.5% ABV, 45 IBU) offers up more of a kick than most ambers. The Sasquatch (8% ABV, 26 IBU) is back for another run.

News: Canteen has begun filling Crowlers, 32-ounce aluminum cans that can be filled with any beer on tap. They get sealed up and can last for a lot longer than a regular growler. Then you bring back the Crowlers to be recycled and get some fresh ones.

Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill — (505) 994-9364

(Open daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m.)

Beers: Papacabra (Double IPA), Acapulco Gold (Mexican Lager), Chupacabra IPA, Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale, Beer for My Horses (Oatmeal Stout), Inebriator (Doppelbock), Kilt Kicker (Smoked Scottish), Calabaza (Pumpkin Ale), Festival (Oktoberfest). The Piedra del Fuego (5% ABV) is an old favorite. According to Cazuela’s menu: “This cream ale uses red-hot stones to super caramelize the sugars, creating a nutty, toffee-like flavor.” The Inebriator (8% ABV) and the Papacabra (9.7% ABV) are the biggest beers in the lineup. Cazuela’s was the first local brewery to tap a pumpkin ale, in their case the Calabaza, which was created by new brewer Brandon Venaglia. He kept the seasonal theme going with Festival, his version of an Oktoberfest.

Chama River Brewing Company — (505) 342-1800

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Radioactive IPA, Sun Dog Kolsch, Bambina Milk Stout, Juniper Berry Braggot. The most recent additions are the Kolsch and the Braggot (9% ABV), the latter of which is a hybrid of a beer and a mead. Before that came the hop-tastic Radioactive and smooth-as-silk Bambina.

Distillery 365 — (505) 221-6281

(Mon-Thu 3-9 p.m., Fri 3-10 p.m., Sat noon-10 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.-8 p.m.)

Beers: 365 ESB, Lone Pine Pilsner, Faulty Barrel-Aged Ale, Happenstance All-Day Blonde. Distillery 365 is located at 2921 Stanford Dr., just south of Candelaria and not far from La Cumbre and Canteen. The most recent addition is the Faulty, which was aged for several months in red wine barrels. The ESB a simple English ale. This batch offers up more flavor from the hops and malts. The Lone Pine is a dry German pilsner. The All-Day is the first in a new series of beers. We will have more details soon. They are also serving their house-made Holy Ghost Vodka and Horsethief Rum, a 100-percent molasses-based silver rum, plus guest taps from Red Door.

Events: 10 Drink Minimum will host a Cards Against Humanity night every Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Distillery 365 has a build-your-own bloody mary bar. You can purchase three bloodies for just $20.

News: Barrel No. 1 of their Tres Pistolas Bourbon has been filled, but it’ll be another two years before anyone can drink it. Good things come to those who wait, I suppose.

Kaktus Brewing — (505) 379-5072

(Bernalillo hours Mon-Thu 2-9 p.m., Fri-Sat 11:30-10 p.m., Sun 11:30-9 p.m.)

Beers: Dunkel, 1492 IPA, Smoke and Fire Porter, ESB, Coffee-roasted Schwarz Bier, Helles Lager, Peppermint Stout, Red Ale, Imperial Stout. The most recent additions are the Imperial Stout (11% ABV), the Schwarz Bier, made with local coffee, and the annual holiday favorite, Peppermint Stout. Before that came the Red Ale, Dunkel, and ESB, a longtime Crew favorite at Kaktus. Other seasonals available are the 1492 IPA (made with Columbus hops, natch), Smoke and Fire Porter (a cherrywood smoked porter with Chipotle), and Helles Lager. Kaktus is located at 471 South Hill Road in Bernalillo, for those who have still not made the trek.

News: Kaktus has several new weekday specials including $3 pints on Monday, $9 growlers on Tuesday, $6 bison nachos on Wednesday, and $8 Frito pie and beer on Thursday.

Events: The Desert Darlings belly dancers perform from 6 to 8 p.m. on almost every Sunday. If you’ve never seen the Desert Darlings in person, you’re missing out. For those who do not want to make the trek to Bernalillo, you are in luck, they will be performing Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Kaktus’ new Nob Hill taproom. In addition to the entertainment, all pizzas will be $4 off.

Every Sunday, Kaktus is hosting a brunch special from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with breakfast pizzas and drink specials.

La Cumbre Brewing — (505) 872-0225

(Open every day at noon)

Beers: Ryeot on Rye, La Roja Grande, Gracias Por Fumar (on nitro), Grange’s Session IPA, It’s Not EVEN Brown. All the beers that came out for La Cumbre’s recent 5th anniversary week are still available. The most recent addition is It’s Not EVEN Brown, a brown ale that looks red and tastes like something wholly different. The Ryeot on Rye is an amped-up, barrel-aged version of their popular Red Ryeot. Gracias Por Fumar is a smoked porter that goes oh so well on nitro. Before that came the Grange’s Session IPA, with $1 from every pint sold going to the fight against ALS. For a session, this thing has a hell of a hop kick. It’s La Cumbre, though, so should we really expect any less? La Roja Grande, an imperial red in case your Spanish is worse than mine, is now on tap.

Events: Rudy Boy Experiment performs on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. Yoga is back at the taproom every Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Lizard Tail Brewing — (505) 717-1301

(Mon–Weds noon-9 p.m., Thurs–Sat noon-midnight, Sun noon-7 p.m.)

Beers: Long Nosed Tripel, Legless DIPA, Frilled Irish Red, Earless English IPA. This seasonal list might be out of date, so call ahead before you head over. The Long Nosed (9.2% ABV, 30 IBU) is one of the biggest beers on the menu. The Legless (8.5% ABV, 100 IBU) offers up quite the hop kick. Earless (6.4% ABV, 50 IBU) is in the classic English tradition. The Irish Red (5.3% ABV, 24 IBU) has the perfect malt profile, not too sweet, not too dry.

News: Lizard Tail’s happy hour runs seven days a week from 3 to 6 p.m. You get $1 off food, flights, and pints. Take note that Lizard Tail now opens at noon every day.

Events: Lizard Tail will host Geeks Who Drink every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Every Thursday will now feature karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.

Marble Brewery — (505) 243-2739

(Mon–Sat noon–midnight, Sun noon–10:30 p.m.)

Beers: Both locations — Reserve Ale, White Out, Double IPA; Downtown only — Imperial Red, Tall, Dark, and Pumpkin; Westside only — El Mysterio. The Tall, Dark, and Pumpkin (6.2% ABV) is nearly out. The TDP is a brown ale with pumpkin spice and vanilla, served on nitro. Three heavyweights, the Reserve, Double IPA, and Imperial Red, are back on tap. White Out (9% ABV), which was originally brewed for Marble’s seventh anniversary back in April, is now back on tap for a limited time. El Mysterio is down to its last drops at the Westside. It is a blended, barrel-aged mix of Oatmeal Stout, Imperial Red, and Barleywine.

Events: Brewery tours occur at the Downtown Pub every Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

On the live music front, Matt Jones will take the indoor stage Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

There is no music at the Westside Taproom while they undergo renovation and expansion. Look for the new stage to be ready in March.

Nexus Brewery — (505) 242-4100

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Equinox, Hoppy Wheat, U.S.S. Simcoe, Salted Caramel Stout. The recent release party for the Salted Caramel Stout was packed to the rafters; trust us, the beer was worth it. The U.S.S. Simcoe (7% ABV, 30 IBU) is the latest pale ale in Nexus’ S.M.A.S.H. (single malt and single hop) series, and it is a tasty one. Equinox (6.5% ABV, 16 IBU) is back for another run of pumpkin-spiced brown ale goodness. This year’s version wowed us all at NM Brew Fest. The Hoppy Wheat is a seasonal hopped-up wheat beer, as if you could not guess by the name.

Events: Nexus serves up Happy Hour All Day on Tuesday featuring $3 pints. Also on Tuesday, Nexus will be hosting their comedy open mic, Young Dumb and Full of Comedy, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room.

Pi Brewing at Nicky V’s Neighborhood Pizzeria — (505) 890-9463

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Cardinal Sin Red, Robust Porter, Pi Vapor, Kama Citra IPA, English Summer Ale, Pre-Prohibition Pilsner, Belgian Pumpkin Ale, Winter is Coming. No, Winter is Coming is not just to make you all yearn for the return of Game of Thrones, is a peppermint porter that will get you into the holiday mood. The Robust Porter and Pi Vapor, a California Common, are other recent additions to the lineup. The Cardinal Sin Red and Kama Citra IPA look to become permanent members of the lineup. While Pi Brewing is not open to the public yet, they are able to brew and serve their beers next door at Nicky V’s. We’ll keep tabs on when Pi itself opens.

News: They are brewing up a double batch of the outstanding Bourbon Vanilla Porter.

Ponderosa Brewing Co. — (505) 639-5941

Beers: (Regular) Ghost Train IPA, Rip Saw Red, Crosscut Kolsch, Bellamah Brown, American Wheat; (Seasonal) Zaftig, Stage One IPA, Bohemian Pilsner, Spanglish. Ponderosa is located at 1761 Bellamah NW, which is just east of Rio Grande and due north of the NM Natural History Museum, in the bottom floor of a swanky-looking apartment/retail complex (they have a sign atop the building now that you cannot miss). Congrats to Bellamah Brown and American Wheat for joining the regular beer list, both by popular demand. The newest additions are the Bohemian (5.2% ABV, 32 IBU) and the Spanglish (4.6% ABV, 18 IBU), a Mexican-style lager. Other recent additions to taps are Zaftig (4.6% ABV, 26 IBU), a creamy smooth oatmeal stout, and Stage One IPA (8% ABV, 107 IBU) is a big, hopped-up oatmeal IPA. There is also a raspberry-infused version of the Zaftig.

Red Door Brewing — (505) 633-6675

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fri 11 a.m. to midnight, Sat 7 a.m. to midnight, Sun 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.)

Beers: (Regular) Gateway Blonde Ale, Roamer Red, Threshold IPA, Paint it Black Milk Stout, Unhinged Cider, Trapdoor Belgian Wit. (Seasonal) Cosmos Porter, Ryeson Sun Saison, Anniversary Double Red, Dark Side DIPA. No, they did not name the Dark Side DIPA (10.3% ABV, 100+ IBU) after us, but we still went and drank some of this mosh pit of piney hops. Another recent addition is the delicious, slightly hoppy Cosmos Porter. Before that came the Anniversary Double Red  (7.7% ABV, 67 IBU), which has a deceptively low IBU count for a beer that hoppy. It’s got bite, it’s dry, it’s fierce, it’s right up there with the other best imperial reds in town. The Ryeson is still the only rye saison we have ever tasted.

Events: Live music is back tonight (Wednesday) with Next 2 the Tracks from 7 to 9 p.m. The Draft Sessions open mic is just about every Monday from 7 to 9.

Saturday morning will mark another round of Beer and Breakfast, with Barclays Premier League soccer on the telly! From 7 to 10 a.m. you can gather with friends for some food truck-supplied goodies with a pint of beer.

Red Door will no longer be hosting yoga on Sundays.

Rio Bravo Brewing Company — (505) 900-3909

Beers: Rio Bravo Amber, Karl’s Hefeweizen, Dirty Rotten Bastard IPA, Snakebite IPA, Black Angus Stout, Road Runner Red, Duke City Pils, Oktoberfest, Old Town Porter (regular and barrel aged), Barley Wine (regular and barrel aged). You can find Rio Bravo at 1912 2nd St. NW, which is just south of I-40. The most recent additions are the Old Town Porter (7.6% ABV, 55 IBU) and Barley Wine (10.5% ABV, 39 IBU), available in tasty regular format and in the more potent barrel-aged versions. Get ’em quick, because both batches will go fast. Look for another barrel-aged beer after Christmas, which the Crew might just have a hand in brewing (more on that soon, we promise). As for the regular lineup, the Amber (5.7% ABV, 53 IBU) offers up a more flavorful kick than most of its genre. The Hefeweizen (4.6% ABV, 26 IBU) has a big banana aroma, but the flavor is more balanced and smooth. Dirty Rotten Bastard (6.4% ABV, 77 IBU) is a “level one” IPA. Columbus is the primary hop in the DRB. Snakebite (7.4% ABV, 99 IBU) is the bigger “level two” IPA, armed with Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, and Crystal hops. Another addition to the regular lineup is the burly Black Angus Stout (5.9% ABV, 25 IBU). It is not a milk stout, cream stout, chocolate stout, or coffee stout. It is just a stout, thick and strong with prominent roasted flavors, somewhat similar to Deschutes’ Obsidian Stout. Road Runner Red (5.7% ABV, 53 IBU) made a solid debut at MWBF.

Events: Live music is back this week with a pair of doubleheaders. Eryn Bent performs Thursday at 4 p.m., followed by Last Call at 6. Friday will feature Blue Chile at 5 p.m. and the Black Smoke Blues Band at 6:30. James Whiton performs “Solo Loop Bass Madness” on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Rio Bravo will now have karaoke every Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m.

Beers: Pub Ale, RailHead Red, 3:10 to Belen Brown, Dark Engine Stout, Switchgear IPA 1, Switchgear IPA 2. Welcome to the lineup, Sidetrack! Their initial lineup is promising. The Pub Ale (5.1% ABV, 30 IBU) and Brown (5.3% ABV, 38 IBU) are both English-style ales. The Red (5.5% ABV, 33 IBU) is more malty than hoppy. The Stout (6% ABV, 33 IBU) has elements of both an oatmeal and a dry stout. Take your pick between IPA 1 (6.1% ABV, 70 IBU) and IPA (6.6% ABV, 55 IBU). As of this past weekend, the Brown with orange zest and IPA 1 dry-hopped with Ahtanum were both on cask.

TMBC’s winter warmer, O Tannenbaum (5.6% ABV, 24 IBU) is also on tap. It was brewed with fresh ginger and spruce tips. The Arsenal Porter is the latest entry in the classic beer series brought back.

The newest beers on tap are the Black IPA and Scotch Ale.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s four breweries and a pair of newcomers, one down in Socorro and the other in Los Alamos, also joining the party.

Now that we all (hopefully) survived blizzard-palooza 2015, one of those great (or stupid) drinking holidays is upon us. Yup, for better or worse, it is New Year’s Eve time again. So get ready to mumble along to that one song everyone can’t really sing but tries to sing anyway. Cash in that designated driver card, or prepare to Uber, or heck, tell your friend you are bringing a sleeping bag along. Just make sure you are bringing a growler or some excellent bombers/sixers if you’re gonna do that. If you are not doing the house party thing, a few of our breweries will be hosting some festivities. As we mentioned the other day, Kaktus is opening their Nob Hill taproom with a party starting at 7 p.m. and running until midnight. They will also have a party for their Bernalillo patrons at the brewery running the same hours. Other places hosting live music and/or special events include Distillery 365, Lizard Tail, Nicky V’s Pizzeria/Pi Brewing, Rio Bravo, and Tractor Wells Park. Outside of ABQ, there will be music and other goings on at Bathtub Row in Los Alamos and Twisted Chile in Socorro. See each brewery’s individual entry below for more details.

For those breweries who provided it, here are their hours, if different from normal, for New Year’s Eve and Day.

  • Boese Brothers will stay open past midnight Thursday, with normal hours Friday.
  • Bosque will close their San Mateo location at 5 p.m., so hurry over to fill your growlers or to pick up a bomber or two.
  • Boxing Bear is also closing early Thurssday, at 6 p.m., and will open at noon on Friday.
  • La Cumbre closes at 8 p.m. Thursday and will be closed all day and night Friday.
  • Marble has last call at 8:30 p.m. and shuts their doors at 9. They will then have a New Year’s Day party (see their entry below).
  • Nicky V’s/Pi will host a “New York New Year’s,” meaning they close at 10 p.m. (midnight NYC time).
  • Turtle Mountain could close at any time after 6 p.m., it will be at the discretion of their manager on duty. Normal hours resume Friday.
  • Up in Santa Fe, Second Street will be closed Friday.
  • Down in Socorro, Twisted Chile closes at 10 p.m. both nights.

It is, once again, an understandably light week for new beers. The most excellent Scale Tipper IPL is available at all three Bosque locations. It’s Not EVEN Brown will confound your senses at La Cumbre. Marble has resurrected White Out in honor of the recent snow. Turtle Mountain is feeling summery in the dead of winter with All Peached Up.

Down in Socorro, Twisted Chile has McFadden’s Scotch Ale and Twisted Black IPA back on tap.

Their new brewer, Carnie (formerly of Santa Fe), sent us his updated list. Off the Richter Red is an imperial. The Handlebars is available on both CO2 and nitro. The most recent additions are the Irish Red and Brett Brown.

Events: ABC has a new happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, plus Sunday will have all-day happy hour prices.

Back Alley Draft House — (505) 766-8590

Beers: Honey Common, Latir Pale Lager, Berliner Weisse, Braggot, Lando’s Lager. There are four recent additions to the taps. The Latir is an old favorite, while the Honey Common is a sweet twist on the Cali Common. The Braggot is a beer-cider hybrid. Lando’s Lager honors the great Billy Dee Williams as a proper malt liquor.

Events: Sundays are Service Nights at Back Alley, with $2 off all beers for service industry workers. Bring your server’s ID and you will be rewarded. All beers are $1 off on Tuesdays.

Bistronomy B2B/Lobo Beast 101 — (505) 262-2222 (B2B), (505) 247-2116 (Lobo)

(B2B: Mon–Tues 4-9 p.m., Weds noon-9 p.m., Thurs–Sat noon-9:30 p.m., Sun noon-9 p.m.; Lobo: open every day 4 p.m. to close)

Beers: House IPA, Cherry Stout, Coconut Porter, Raz Wheat, Red Rye, Brown Ale, Rye Noon, Very Chai Christmas, Cerveza Chile Verde (B2B only), Galaxy Pale Ale (Lobo only), Pepper Saison (Lobo only). At long last, we have a list for B2B and their sister location, Lobo Beast. They rotate through beers quickly, so if you see one you have to try off this list, hurry over. As proof, the lineup shifted significantly in recent weeks. The freshest additions are the House IPA, Brown Ale, Very Chai Christmas, Cerveza Chile Verde, and Galaxy Pale Ale.

The Blue Grasshopper — (505) 896-8579

Beers: Beach Bum Pale Ale. The popular Beach Bum is back for another run. BG goes through their beers fast, so hurry out to try it. If you have not made it out there yet, the Grasshopper is located at 4500 Arrowhead Ridge Road in Rio Rancho, just off Highway 528.

Boese Brothers Brewery — (505) 382-7060

Beers: Patriot Porter, La Onza White Ale, Old Shonie Scottish Ale, Dr. Strangehop XPA, Duke City Lager, Burly Brown, Barrel-Aged Porter. The Patriot Porter (6% ABV) is a pre-Prohibition style of American porter, more brown than black with strong roasted flavors smoothed out by the nitro pour. La Onza (5.4% ABV) offers up a big, citrusy kick for a Belgian-style witbier. Old Shonie (4.5% ABV) is also available on nitro; it is lighter than most of the other Scottish beers in the ABQ area. The Dr. Strangehop XPA (6.5% ABV) offers up a wonderful mix of the piney Willamette and more floral Mosaic hops. The Duke City Lager (5% ABV) is now a permanent addition to the lineup. Ichabod’s Revenge (7.6% ABV) is a pumpkin ale made with a ton of real pumpkin baked by the staff. The Burly Brown (6.8% ABV, 72 IBU) is an India Brown/Cascadian style. They are down to the very last of their supply, so hurry over before it runs out. The Barrel-Aged Porter is on tap for a limited time.

Events: Boese will have a happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with $3 pints. You can also get $3 pints all day Tuesday and $6 growler fills all day Wednesday.

Beers: Jared’s Belgian Quad with cherries, Eldorado Pale Ale, Imperial Coffee Brown, Scale Tipper IPL, Dry Stout (on nitro at all locations, CO2 at Las Cruces only), Jingle Bell Bock (Nob Hill only), Citra S.M.A.S.H. (Las Cruces and San Mateo). All three Bosque locations are now up to date. The new Belgian ale series is underway with the decadent Jared’s Quad with cherries (10.3% ABV, 25 IBU). The Eldorado Pale Ale (6.4% ABV, 30 IBU) is a delicious, single-hop pale. The new Jingle Bell Bock (6.9% ABV, 20 IBU) is a sweet treat. The Imperial Coffee Brown (9% ABV, 20 IBU) is also for sale in bombers; we highly, highly recommend you pick up this one before it’s gone. You can still buy bombers of the barrel-aged Jet Black Winter (10.2% ABV) until the supply runs out. The newest additions are the Dry Stout (4.5% ABV, 20 IBU) and Scale Tipper IPL (6.1% ABV, 95 IBU), which is a lager using the Scale Tipper hops. The Citra S.M.A.S.H. is also now popping up at the different locations as tap space becomes available.

Beers: Body Slam Imperial Pilsner, Fist Pump Pumpkin Ale, Chocolate Milk Stout, Bear-El Aged Stout, Crystal S.M.A.S.H., Iron Lung Smoked Porter. Boxing Bear got into the barrel-aging game by taking some Standing 8 Stout and putting it in Pinot Noir barrels. Go try this rather different take on a barrel-aged offering while it lasts. The appropriately smoky Iron Lung is back for another run. The Chocolate Milk Stout (5.2% ABV, 20 IBU), a silver medal winner at GABF this fall, is still available for a limited time. You can expect it to go fast, again, so head over ASAP. Is also available on nitro while supplies last, plus now they have bottled it and bombers are for sale at the brewery and at Jubilation. Other available seasonals include the Fist Pump (5.4% ABV, 20 IBU) and Body Slam (7.4% ABV, 60 IBU).

Canteen Brewhouse — (505) 881-2737

Beers: Irish Red, Cherry Blossom Wheat, Galaxy IPA, Aumbers Amber, Sweet Sandarine Porter, Schwarzbier, Black Hops IPA, Panama Joe Coffee Stout. The Porter, Schwarzbier, Black Hops, and Panama Joe are all part of this year’s edition of Solstice Blackout. Get a sample tray of all five for $5 or you can purchase individual pints. The Crew visited recently and we all declared this batch of Panama Joe just as good as the one that medaled at the Great American Beer Festival in 2014. The Galaxy IPA (7.2% ABV, 80 IBU) will take you out of this world. The Cherry Blossom Wheat (4% ABV, 10 IBU) was made with 100-percent tart cherry puree, and it offers a nice break from the heavier beers on tap. The Aumbers (6.5% ABV, 45 IBU) offers up more of a kick than most ambers.

News: Canteen has begun filling Crowlers, 32-ounce aluminum cans that can be filled with any beer on tap. They get sealed up and can last for a lot longer than a regular growler. Then you bring back the Crowlers to be recycled and get some fresh ones.

Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill — (505) 994-9364

Beers: Papacabra (Double IPA), Acapulco Gold (Mexican Lager), Chupacabra IPA, Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale, Beer for My Horses (Oatmeal Stout), Inebriator (Doppelbock), Kilt Kicker (Smoked Scottish), Calabaza (Pumpkin Ale), Festival (Oktoberfest). The Piedra del Fuego (5% ABV) is an old favorite. According to Cazuela’s menu: “This cream ale uses red-hot stones to super caramelize the sugars, creating a nutty, toffee-like flavor.” The Inebriator (8% ABV) and the Papacabra (9.7% ABV) are the biggest beers in the lineup. Cazuela’s was the first local brewery to tap a pumpkin ale, in their case the Calabaza, which was created by new brewer Brandon Venaglia. He kept the seasonal theme going with Festival, his version of an Oktoberfest.

Beers: Radioactive IPA, Sun Dog Kolsch, Bambina Milk Stout, Juniper Berry Braggot. The most recent additions are the Kolsch and the Braggot (9% ABV), the latter of which is a hybrid of a beer and a mead. Before that came the hop-tastic Radioactive and smooth-as-silk Bambina.

Distillery 365 — (505) 221-6281

Beers: 365 ESB, 4th of July American Ale, Lone Pine Pilsner, Faulty Barrel-Aged Ale. Distillery 365 is located at 2921 Stanford Dr., just south of Candelaria and not far from La Cumbre and Canteen. The most recent addition is the Faulty, which was aged for several months in red wine barrels. The 4th of July is their first beer to highlight the native Neomexicanus hops. It is a highly aromatic strong ale with very little bitterness. The ESB a simple English ale. This second batch offers up more flavor from the hops and malts. The Lone Pine has been on tap for a while, sorry we are just remembering to add it here now. They are also serving their house-made Holy Ghost Vodka and Horsethief Rum, a 100-percent molasses-based silver rum, plus guest taps from Red Door.

Events: 10 Drink Minimum will host a Cards Against Humanity night every Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Distillery 365 will host live music for New Year’s Eve with Eryn Bent and Quietly Kept. It all kicks off at 8 p.m.

Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Distillery 365 has a build-your-own bloody mary bar. You can purchase three bloodies for just $20.

News: Barrel No. 1 of their Tres Pistolas Bourbon has been filled, but it’ll be another two years before anyone can drink it. Good things come to those who wait, I suppose.

Kaktus Brewing — (505) 379-5072

Beers: Dunkel, 1492 IPA, Smoke and Fire Porter, ESB, Coffee-roasted Schwarz Bier, Helles Lager, Peppermint Stout, Red Ale. The most recent additions are the Schwarz Bier, made with local coffee, plus the annual holiday favorite, Peppermint Stout. Before that came the Red Ale, Dunkel, and ESB, a longtime Crew favorite at Kaktus. Other seasonals available are the 1492 IPA (made with Columbus hops, natch), Smoke and Fire Porter (a cherrywood smoked porter with Chipotle), and Helles Lager. Kaktus is located at 471 South Hill Road in Bernalillo, for those who have still not made the trek.

News: Kaktus has several new weekday specials including $3 pints on Monday, $9 growlers on Tuesday, $6 bison nachos on Wednesday, and $8 Frito pie and beer on Thursday.

Beers: Ryeot on Rye, La Negra, Gracias Por Fumar (on nitro), Grange’s Session IPA, It’s Not EVEN Brown. All the beers that came out for La Cumbre’s recent 5th anniversary week are still available. The most recent addition is It’s Not EVEN Brown, a brown ale that looks red and tastes like something wholly different. The Ryeot on Rye is an amped-up, barrel-aged version of their popular Red Ryeot. La Negra is a big, thick, imperial stout. Gracias Por Fumar is a smoked porter that goes oh so well on nitro. Before that came the Grange’s Session IPA, with $1 from every pint sold going to the fight against ALS. For a session, this thing has a hell of a hop kick. It’s La Cumbre, though, so should we really expect any less?

Events: Sweet Spot performs on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. Yoga is back at the taproom every Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Lizard Tail Brewing — (505) 717-1301

Beers: Long Nosed Tripel, Legless DIPA, Frilled Irish Red, Earless English IPA. This seasonal list might be out of date, so call ahead before you head over. The Long Nosed (9.2% ABV, 30 IBU) is one of the biggest beers on the menu. The Legless (8.5% ABV, 100 IBU) offers up quite the hop kick. Earless (6.4% ABV, 50 IBU) is in the classic English tradition. The Irish Red (5.3% ABV, 24 IBU) has the perfect malt profile, not too sweet, not too dry.

News: Lizard Tail’s happy hour runs seven days a week from 3 to 6 p.m. You get $1 off food, flights, and pints. Take note that Lizard Tail now opens at noon every day.

Events: Lizard Tail will host Geeks Who Drink every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Every Thursday will now feature karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.

Marble Brewery — (505) 243-2739

Beers: Both locations — Tall, Dark, and Pumpkin, Reserve Ale, Imperial Red; Downtown only — Double IPA, White Out; Westside only — Hey Porter. Head over to either Marble location fast before the Tall, Dark, and Pumpkin (6.2% ABV) runs out. The TDP is a brown ale with pumpkin spice and vanilla, served on nitro. Also available at both locations is the delectable Hey Porter (5.9% ABV). Two heavyweights, the Reserve and Imperial Red, are back on tap. White Out (9% ABV), which was originally brewed for Marble’s seventh anniversary back in April, is now back on tap for a limited time.

Events: Brewery tours occur at the Downtown Pub every Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

On the live music front, Lenin & McCarthy will take the indoor stage tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 9 p.m.

This Friday will mark a special New Year’s Day Party, featuring the release of a “mysterious, barrel-aged offering.” There will be live music with Buffalo Gals from 2 to 3 p.m., Saltine Ramblers from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and Next 3 Miles from 6 to 8 p.m.

There is no music at the Westside Taproom while they undergo renovation and expansion. Look for the new stage to be ready in March.

Nexus Brewery — (505) 242-4100

Beers: Equinox, Hoppy Wheat, U.S.S. Simcoe, Salted Caramel Stout. The recent release party for the Salted Caramel Stout was packed to the rafters; trust us, the beer was worth it. The U.S.S. Simcoe (7% ABV, 30 IBU) is the latest pale ale in Nexus’ S.M.A.S.H. (single malt and single hop) series, and it is a tasty one. Equinox (6.5% ABV, 16 IBU) is back for another run of pumpkin-spiced brown ale goodness. This year’s version wowed us all at NM Brew Fest. The Hoppy Wheat is a seasonal hopped-up wheat beer, as if you could not guess by the name.

Events: Nexus serves up Happy Hour All Day on Tuesday featuring $3 pints. Also on Tuesday, Nexus will be hosting their comedy open mic, Young Dumb and Full of Comedy, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room.

Pi Brewing at Nicky V’s Neighborhood Pizzeria — (505) 890-9463

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Cardinal Sin Red, Robust Porter, Pi Vapor, Kama Citra IPA, English Summer Ale, Pre-Prohibition Pilsner, Belgian Pumpkin Ale, Winter is Coming. No, Winter is Coming is not just to make you all yearn for the return of Game of Thrones, is a peppermint porter that will get you into the holiday mood. The Robust Porter and Pi Vapor, a California Common, are other recent additions to the lineup. The Cardinal Sin Red and Kama Citra IPA look to become permanent members of the lineup. While Pi Brewing is not open to the public yet, they are able to brew and serve their beers next door at Nicky V’s. We’ll keep tabs on when Pi itself opens.

News: They are brewing up a double batch of the outstanding Bourbon Vanilla Porter.

Ponderosa Brewing Co. — (505) 639-5941

Beers: (Regular) Ghost Train IPA, Rip Saw Red, Crosscut Kolsch, Bellamah Brown, American Wheat; (Seasonal) Zaftig, Stage One IPA, Bohemian Pilsner, Spanglish. Ponderosa is located at 1761 Bellamah NW, which is just east of Rio Grande and due north of the NM Natural History Museum, in the bottom floor of a swanky-looking apartment/retail complex (they have a sign atop the building now that you cannot miss). Congrats to Bellamah Brown and American Wheat for joining the regular beer list, both by popular demand. The newest additions are the Bohemian (5.2% ABV, 32 IBU) and the Spanglish (4.6% ABV, 18 IBU), a Mexican-style lager. Other recent additions to taps are Zaftig (4.6% ABV, 26 IBU), a creamy smooth oatmeal stout, and Stage One IPA (8% ABV, 107 IBU) is a big, hopped-up oatmeal IPA. There is also a raspberry-infused version of the Zaftig.

Red Door Brewing — (505) 633-6675

Beers: (Regular) Gateway Blonde Ale, Roamer Red, Threshold IPA, Paint it Black Milk Stout, Unhinged Cider, Trapdoor Belgian Wit. (Seasonal) Cosmos Porter, Ryeson Sun Saison, Anniversary Double Red, Dark Side DIPA. No, they did not name the Dark Side DIPA (10.3% ABV, 100+ IBU) after us, but we still went and drank some of this mosh pit of piney hops. Another recent addition is the delicious, slightly hoppy Cosmos Porter. Before that came the Anniversary Double Red  (7.7% ABV, 67 IBU), which has a deceptively low IBU count for a beer that hoppy. It’s got bite, it’s dry, it’s fierce, it’s right up there with the other best imperial reds in town. The Ryeson is still the only rye saison we have ever tasted.

Events: Live music is back tonight (Wednesday) with David Webb from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Draft Sessions open mic is just about every Monday from 7 to 9.

Saturday morning will mark another round of Beer and Breakfast, with Barclays Premier League soccer on the telly! From 7 to 10 a.m. you can gather with friends for some food truck-supplied goodies with a pint of beer.

Red Door will no longer be hosting yoga on Sundays.

Rio Bravo Brewing Company — (505) 900-3909

(Mon–Thu noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–11 p.m., Sun noon–9 p.m.)

Beers: Rio Bravo Amber, Karl’s Hefeweizen, Dirty Rotten Bastard IPA, Snakebite IPA, Black Angus Stout, Road Runner Red, Duke City Pils, Oktoberfest, Old Town Porter (regular and barrel aged), Barley Wine (regular and barrel aged). You can find Rio Bravo at 1912 2nd St. NW, which is just south of I-40. The most recent additions are the Old Town Porter (7.6% ABV, 55 IBU) and Barley Wine (10.5% ABV, 39 IBU), available in tasty regular format and in the more potent barrel-aged versions. Get ’em quick, because both batches will go fast. Look for another barrel-aged beer after Christmas, which the Crew might just have a hand in brewing (more on that soon, we promise). As for the regular lineup, the Amber (5.7% ABV, 53 IBU) offers up a more flavorful kick than most of its genre. The Hefeweizen (4.6% ABV, 26 IBU) has a big banana aroma, but the flavor is more balanced and smooth. Dirty Rotten Bastard (6.4% ABV, 77 IBU) is a “level one” IPA. Columbus is the primary hop in the DRB. Snakebite (7.4% ABV, 99 IBU) is the bigger “level two” IPA, armed with Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, and Crystal hops. Another addition to the regular lineup is the burly Black Angus Stout (5.9% ABV, 25 IBU). It is not a milk stout, cream stout, chocolate stout, or coffee stout. It is just a stout, thick and strong with prominent roasted flavors, somewhat similar to Deschutes’ Obsidian Stout. Road Runner Red (5.7% ABV, 53 IBU) made a solid debut at MWBF.

Events: Live music is back this week with a doubleheader on New Year’s Eve. Clark Andrew Libbey performs at 4 p.m., followed by Given Time at 6 p.m. Scotty & the Atomics follow Saturday at 6 p.m.

It is nearly out at Nob Hill, with Luna ready to replace it, so hurry over. Still hanging around are the Dark Horse Lager (5.6% ABV) and Summer Ale (7% ABV). The Ruggles (4.4% ABV) is a California Common-style beer. Berliner Weisse (5.1% ABV) is still available at both locations.

Events: Flo Fader will be spinning at Wells Park on New Year’s Eve starting at 8 p.m.

The In the Mix Series is back Saturday at Wells Park with DJ Soiree spinning at 9 p.m.

Sunday features the premier of the pilot episode of the new TV series “Bordertown” at Wells Park, starting at 8 p.m.

The most recent additions before that were the Challenger and Altbier.

The newest beers on tap are the Black IPA and Scotch Ale.

Head on over to Jubilation today (Wednesday) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., or Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. After that, you’re outta luck, since they’re gonna be closed Christmas Day and the day after. As for our breweries, for growler and/or package purchasing (remember, you can still buy brewery merchandise and/or memberships, too), we have holiday hours for some of them. We asked all, but only a few responded. Keep checking their Facebook pages. All will be closed Christmas Day, we do know that. As for Christmas Eve, here are some of the closing times that we have so far.

  • UPDATE: Boese Brothers will be closed Thursday, open Saturday. Sorry, had that backwards earlier. Get your growlers filled for just $6 today.
  • UPDATE: All Bosque locations will close at 5 p.m.
  • UPDATE: Kaktus closes at 7 p.m. They will have $3 pints and food specials.
  • La Cumbre closes at 5 p.m.
  • Marble has last call at 7:30 p.m. and shuts their doors at 8
  • Rio Bravo closes at 6 p.m.
  • Tractor will close whenever people stop rolling in (they open early at 1 p.m., take note of that at both locations)
  • Down in Socorro, Twisted Chile closes at 6 p.m.

It is an understandably light week for new beers. Bosque has a Dry Stout at both ABQ locations. The Iron Lung Smoked Porter is back at Boxing Bear. Canteen’s Solstice Blackout means there will now be Sweet Sandarine Porter, Schwarzbier, Black Hops IPA, and Panama Joe Coffee Stout on tap, either as part of the sampler, or separately in pints. Chama River has more Sun Dog Kolsch available. There will be a release party today for Salted Caramel Stout at Nexus. Tractor released Luna De Los Muertos Russian Imperial Stout back on Monday.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street has their holiday ale, Festivus, on tap, along with a fresh batch of Rod’s Best Bitter.

Oh, and we would also recommend stopping by Nob Hill Bar & Grill tonight after 6 p.m. to say farewell in person to bar manager Thomas DeCaro, who is leaving for a position with Ballast Point. Before departing, he is hosting an Avery tap takeover with Raja DIPA, Liliko’i, and the new Vanilla Bean Stout.

Beers: Whiskey Stout, Imperial IPA. AmyO said these were the two specialty beers available when she made a recent visit to learn about the rebranding of ABQ Brew Pub into Alien Brew Pub (which is now complete). Beers: High Plains Drifter Blonde, Dukes Pale Ale, G2 IPA, Off the Richter Red, Handlebars Stout, Brett Brown, Irish Red Ale. Welcome back, ABC. Their new brewer, Carnie (formerly of Santa Fe), sent us his updated list. Off the Richter Red is an imperial. The Handlebars is available on both CO2 and nitro. The most recent additions are the Irish Red and Brett Brown.

Events: ABC has a new happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, plus Sunday will have all-day happy hour prices.

Back Alley Draft House — (505) 766-8590

Beers: Honey Common, Latir Pale Lager, Berliner Weisse, Braggot, Lando’s Lager. There are four recent additions to the taps. The Latir is an old favorite, while the Honey Common is a sweet twist on the Cali Common. The Braggot is a beer-cider hybrid. Lando’s Lager honors the great Billy Dee Williams as a proper malt liquor.

Events: Sundays are Service Nights at Back Alley, with $2 off all beers for service industry workers. Bring your server’s ID and you will be rewarded. All beers are $1 off on Tuesdays.

Bistronomy B2B/Lobo Beast 101 — (505) 262-2222 (B2B), (505) 247-2116 (Lobo)

Beers: House IPA, Cherry Stout, Coconut Porter, Raz Wheat, Red Rye, Brown Ale, Rye Noon, Very Chai Christmas, Cerveza Chile Verde (B2B only), Galaxy Pale Ale (Lobo only), Pepper Saison (Lobo only). At long last, we have a list for B2B and their sister location, Lobo Beast. They rotate through beers quickly, so if you see one you have to try off this list, hurry over. As proof, the lineup shifted significantly in recent weeks. The freshest additions are the House IPA, Brown Ale, Very Chai Christmas, Cerveza Chile Verde, and Galaxy Pale Ale.

The Blue Grasshopper — (505) 896-8579

Beers: Beach Bum Pale Ale. The popular Beach Bum is back for another run. BG goes through their beers fast, so hurry out to try it. If you have not made it out there yet, the Grasshopper is located at 4500 Arrowhead Ridge Road in Rio Rancho, just off Highway 528.

Boese Brothers Brewery — (505) 382-7060

Beers: Patriot Porter, La Onza White Ale, Old Shonie Scottish Ale, Dr. Strangehop XPA, Duke City Lager, Burly Brown, Barrel-Aged Porter. The Patriot Porter (6% ABV) is a pre-Prohibition style of American porter, more brown than black with strong roasted flavors smoothed out by the nitro pour. La Onza (5.4% ABV) offers up a big, citrusy kick for a Belgian-style witbier. Old Shonie (4.5% ABV) is also available on nitro; it is lighter than most of the other Scottish beers in the ABQ area. The Dr. Strangehop XPA (6.5% ABV) offers up a wonderful mix of the piney Willamette and more floral Mosaic hops. The Duke City Lager (5% ABV) is now a permanent addition to the lineup. Ichabod’s Revenge (7.6% ABV) is a pumpkin ale made with a ton of real pumpkin baked by the staff. The Burly Brown (6.8% ABV, 72 IBU) is an India Brown/Cascadian style. They are down to the very last of their supply, so hurry over before it runs out. The Barrel-Aged Porter is on tap for a limited time.

Events: Boese will have a happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with $3 pints. You can also get $3 pints all day Tuesday and $6 growler fills all day Wednesday.

Beers: Humo Rojo, Olde Bosky Porter, Belgian Blonde, Jared’s Belgian Quad with cherries, Eldorado Pale Ale, Dry Stout (Nob Hill and San Mateo), Jingle Bell Bock (Nob Hill only), Imperial Coffee Brown (on nitro). All three Bosque locations are now up to date. The new Belgian ale series is underway with the Belgian Blonde (7.3% ABV, 24 IBU), plus the Jared’s Quad with cherries. An old favorite has returned in the Olde Bosky Porter (6% ABV, 27 IBU), an original member of the lineup that cries out for a return to your bellies. Still available is the Humo Rojo (5.6% ABV, 16 IBU), a smoked red ale. The Eldorado Pale Ale is a delicious, single-hop pale. The new Jingle Bell Bock is a sweet treat. The Imperial Coffee Brown is also for sale in bombers; we highly, highly recommend you pick up this one before it’s gone. You can still buy bombers of the barrel-aged Jet Black Winter (10.2% ABV) until the supply runs out. The newest addition is the Dry Stout (4.5% ABV, 20 IBU).

Boxing Bear Brewing Company — (505) 897-2327

Beers: Noble Pale Ale, Body Slam Imperial Pilsner, Fist Pump Pumpkin Ale, Chocolate Milk Stout, Bear-El Aged Stout, Crystal S.M.A.S.H., Iron Lung Smoked Porter. Boxing Bear got into the barrel-aging game by taking some Standing 8 Stout and putting it in Pinot Noir barrels. Go try this rather different take on a barrel-aged offering while it lasts. The appropriately smoky Iron Lung is back for another run. The Chocolate Milk Stout (5.2% ABV, 20 IBU), a silver medal winner at GABF this fall, is still available for a limited time. You can expect it to go fast, again, so head over ASAP. Is also available on nitro while supplies last, plus now they have bottled it and bombers are for sale at the brewery and at Jubilation. Other available seasonals include the Fist Pump (5.4% ABV, 20 IBU), Noble PA (5.8% ABV, 30 IBU), and Body Slam (7.4% ABV, 60 IBU).

News: Every day at lunchtime (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), for just $10 you can get a pint and a panini of your choice.

Events: Geeks Who Drink will now be held every Wednesday from 8 to 10 p.m. at Boxing Bear, except this week. Tonight they are closing early for a Christmas party for the staff. GWD will resume on Dec. 30.

Canteen Brewhouse — (505) 881-2737

(Sun–Thurs noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–midnight)

Beers: Irish Red, Cherry Blossom Wheat, Galaxy IPA, Aumbers Amber, Sweet Sandarine Porter, Schwarzbier, Black Hops IPA, Panama Joe Coffee Stout. The Porter, Schwarzbier, Black Hops, and Panama Joe are all part of this year’s edition of Solstice Blackout. Get a sample tray of all five for $5 or you can purchase individual pints. The Galaxy IPA (7.2% ABV, 80 IBU) will take you out of this world. The Cherry Blossom Wheat (4% ABV, 10 IBU) was made with 100-percent tart cherry puree, and it offers a nice break from the heavier beers on tap. The Aumbers (6.5% ABV, 45 IBU) offers up more of a kick than most ambers.

News: Canteen has begun filling Crowlers, 32-ounce aluminum cans that can be filled with any beer on tap. They get sealed up and can last for a lot longer than a regular growler. Then you bring back the Crowlers to be recycled and get some fresh ones.

Events: Live music is back this week with Keith Sanchez performing Sunday at 3 p.m., followed by the Fabulous MartiniTones on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill — (505) 994-9364

(Open daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m.)

Beers: Papacabra (Double IPA), Acapulco Gold (Mexican Lager), Chupacabra IPA, Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale, Beer for My Horses (Oatmeal Stout), Inebriator (Doppelbock), Kilt Kicker (Smoked Scottish), Calabaza (Pumpkin Ale), Festival (Oktoberfest). The Piedra del Fuego (5% ABV) is an old favorite. According to Cazuela’s menu: “This cream ale uses red-hot stones to super caramelize the sugars, creating a nutty, toffee-like flavor.” The Inebriator (8% ABV) and the Papacabra (9.7% ABV) are the biggest beers in the lineup. Cazuela’s was the first local brewery to tap a pumpkin ale, in their case the Calabaza, which was created by new brewer Brandon Venaglia. He kept the seasonal theme going with Festival, his version of an Oktoberfest.

Chama River Brewing Company — (505) 342-1800

Beers: Radioactive IPA, Sun Dog Kolsch, Bambina Milk Stout, Juniper Berry Braggot. The most recent additions are the Kolsch and the Braggot (9% ABV), the latter of which is a hybrid of a beer and a mead. Before that came the hop-tastic Radioactive and smooth-as-silk Bambina.

Distillery 365 — (505) 221-6281

(Mon-Thu 3-9 p.m., Fri 3-10 p.m., Sat noon-10 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.-8 p.m.)

Beers: 365 ESB, 4th of July American Ale, Lone Pine Pilsner, Faulty Barrel-Aged Ale. Distillery 365 is located at 2921 Stanford Dr., just south of Candelaria and not far from La Cumbre and Canteen. The most recent addition is the Faulty, which was aged for several months in red wine barrels. The 4th of July is their first beer to highlight the native Neomexicanus hops. It is a highly aromatic strong ale with very little bitterness. The ESB a simple English ale. This second batch offers up more flavor from the hops and malts. The Lone Pine has been on tap for a while, sorry we are just remembering to add it here now. They are also serving their house-made Holy Ghost Vodka and Horsethief Rum, a 100-percent molasses-based silver rum, plus guest taps from Red Door.

Events: 10 Drink Minimum will host a Cards Against Humanity night every Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Distillery 365 has a build-your-own bloody mary bar. You can purchase three bloodies for just $20.

News: Barrel No. 1 of their Tres Pistolas Bourbon has been filled, but it’ll be another two years before anyone can drink it. Good things come to those who wait, I suppose.

Oh, and Distillery 365 will open their first tasting room over at Green Jeans Farmery, the same site that is home to Santa Fe Brewing’s ABQ taproom.

Kaktus Brewing — (505) 379-5072

(Hours Mon-Thu 2-9 p.m., Fri-Sat 11:30-10 p.m., Sun 11:30-9 p.m.)

Beers: Dunkel, 1492 IPA, Smoke and Fire Porter, ESB, Coffee-roasted Schwarz Bier, Helles Lager, Peppermint Stout, Red Ale. The most recent additions are the Schwarz Bier, made with local coffee, plus the annual holiday favorite, Peppermint Stout. Before that came the Red Ale, Dunkel, and ESB, a longtime Crew favorite at Kaktus. Other seasonals available are the 1492 IPA (made with Columbus hops, natch), Smoke and Fire Porter (a cherrywood smoked porter with Chipotle), and Helles Lager. Kaktus is located at 471 South Hill Road in Bernalillo, for those who have still not made the trek.

News: Kaktus has several new weekday specials including $3 pints on Monday, $9 growlers on Tuesday, $6 bison nachos on Wednesday, and $8 Frito pie and beer on Thursday.

Kaktus has brewed up their first imperial stout. Look for it soon.

Events: The Desert Darlings belly dancers perform from 6 to 8 p.m. on almost every Sunday. If you’ve never seen the Desert Darlings in person, you’re missing out. They will be taking the holidays off, so we will let you know when their shows resume.

Every Sunday, Kaktus is hosting a brunch special from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with breakfast pizzas and drink specials.

La Cumbre Brewing — (505) 872-0225

(Open every day at noon)

Beers: Ryeot on Rye, La Negra, Gracias Por Fumar (on nitro), Grange’s Session IPA, Trou Noir. All the beers that came out for La Cumbre’s recent 5th anniversary week are still available. The Ryeot on Rye is an amped-up, barrel-aged version of their popular Red Ryeot. La Negra is a big, thick, imperial stout. Gracias Por Fumar is a smoked porter that goes oh so well on nitro. Before that came the Trou Noir (7.5% ABV, 35 IBU), a Belgian dark strong, and the Grange’s Session IPA, with $1 from every pint sold going to the fight against ALS. For a session, this thing has a hell of a hop kick. It’s La Cumbre, though, so should we really expect any less?

Events: Moonhat performs on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. Yoga is back at the taproom every Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Lizard Tail Brewing — (505) 717-1301

(Mon–Weds noon-9 p.m., Thurs–Sat noon-midnight, Sun noon-7 p.m.)

Beers: Long Nosed Tripel, Legless DIPA, Frilled Irish Red, Earless English IPA. This seasonal list might be out of date, so call ahead before you head over. The Long Nosed (9.2% ABV, 30 IBU) is one of the biggest beers on the menu. The Legless (8.5% ABV, 100 IBU) offers up quite the hop kick. Earless (6.4% ABV, 50 IBU) is in the classic English tradition. The Irish Red (5.3% ABV, 24 IBU) has the perfect malt profile, not too sweet, not too dry.

News: Lizard Tail’s happy hour runs seven days a week from 3 to 6 p.m. You get $1 off food, flights, and pints. Take note that Lizard Tail now opens at noon every day.

Events: Lizard Tail will host Geeks Who Drink every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Every Thursday will now feature karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.

Marble Brewery — (505) 243-2739

(Mon–Sat noon–midnight, Sun noon–10:30 p.m.)

Beers: Both locations — Tall, Dark, and Pumpkin, Hey Porter, Reserve Ale, Imperial Red; Downtown only — Double IPA; Westside only — none. Head over to either Marble location fast before the Tall, Dark, and Pumpkin (6.2% ABV) runs out. Remember how fast the last two Marble pumpkin ales went? Exactly. The TDP is a brown ale with pumpkin spice and vanilla, served on nitro. Also available at both locations is the delectable Hey Porter (5.9% ABV). Two heavyweights, the Reserve and Imperial Red, are back on tap. All beers are available at both locations for the time being.

Events: Brewery tours occur at the Downtown Pub every Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Marble will have a tap takeover at Rock & Brews tonight (Wednesday) on Montgomery just west of San Mateo.

On the live music front, Ruben Montoya will take the indoor stage Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

There is no music at the Westside Taproom while they undergo renovation and expansion. Look for the new stage to be ready in March.

Nexus Brewery — (505) 242-4100

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Equinox, Hoppy Wheat, U.S.S. Simcoe, Salted Caramel Stout. Today (Wednesday) will mark the release part for the Salted Caramel Stout. Come on down anytime after 4 p.m. for this holiday treat. The U.S.S. Simcoe (7% ABV, 30 IBU) is the latest pale ale in Nexus’ S.M.A.S.H. (single malt and single hop) series, and it is a tasty one. Equinox (6.5% ABV, 16 IBU) is back for another run of pumpkin-spiced brown ale goodness. This year’s version wowed us all at NM Brew Fest. The Hoppy Wheat is a seasonal hopped-up wheat beer, as if you could not guess by the name.

Events: Nexus serves up Happy Hour All Day on Tuesday featuring $3 pints. Also on Tuesday, Nexus will be hosting their comedy open mic, Young Dumb and Full of Comedy, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room.

Pi Brewing at Nicky V’s Neighborhood Pizzeria — (505) 890-9463

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Cardinal Sin Red, Robust Porter, Pi Vapor, Kama Citra IPA, English Summer Ale, Pre-Prohibition Pilsner, Belgian Pumpkin Ale, Winter is Coming. No, Winter is Coming is not just to make you all yearn for the return of Game of Thrones, is a peppermint porter that will get you into the holiday mood. The Robust Porter and Pi Vapor, a California Common, are other recent additions to the lineup. The Cardinal Sin Red and Kama Citra IPA look to become permanent members of the lineup. While Pi Brewing is not open to the public yet, they are able to brew and serve their beers next door at Nicky V’s. We’ll keep tabs on when Pi itself opens.

News: They are brewing up a double batch of the outstanding Bourbon Vanilla Porter.

Ponderosa Brewing Co. — (505) 639-5941

(Sun 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m.)

Beers: (Regular) Ghost Train IPA, Rip Saw Red, Crosscut Kolsch, Bellamah Brown, American Wheat; (Seasonal) Zaftig, Stage One IPA, Bohemian Pilsner, Spanglish. Ponderosa is located at 1761 Bellamah NW, which is just east of Rio Grande and due north of the NM Natural History Museum, in the bottom floor of a swanky-looking apartment/retail complex (they have a sign atop the building now that you cannot miss). Congrats to Bellamah Brown and American Wheat for joining the regular beer list, both by popular demand. The newest additions are the Bohemian (5.2% ABV, 32 IBU) and the Spanglish (4.6% ABV, 18 IBU), a Mexican-style lager. Other recent additions to taps are Zaftig (4.6% ABV, 26 IBU), a creamy smooth oatmeal stout, and Stage One IPA (8% ABV, 107 IBU) is a big, hopped-up oatmeal IPA. There is also a raspberry-infused version of the Zaftig.

Red Door Brewing — (505) 633-6675

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fri 11 a.m. to midnight, Sat 7 a.m. to midnight, Sun 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.)

Beers: (Regular) Gateway Blonde Ale, Roamer Red, Threshold IPA, Paint it Black Milk Stout, Unhinged Cider, Trapdoor Belgian Wit. (Seasonal) Cosmos Porter, Ryeson Sun Saison, Anniversary Double Red, Dark Side DIPA. No, they did not name the Dark Side DIPA (10.3% ABV, 100+ IBU) after us, but we still went and drank some of this mosh pit of piney hops. Another recent addition is the delicious, slightly hoppy Cosmos Porter. Before that came the Anniversary Double Red  (7.7% ABV, 67 IBU), which has a deceptively low IBU count for a beer this hoppy. It’s got bite, it’s dry, it’s fierce, it’s right up there with the other best imperial reds in town. The Ryeson is still the only rye saison we have ever tasted.

Events: Live music is back tonight (Wednesday) with Todd Tijerina from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Draft Sessions open mic is just about every Monday from 7 to 9.

Saturday morning will mark another round of Beer and Breakfast, with Barclays Premier League soccer on the telly! From 7 to 10 a.m. you can gather with friends for some food truck-supplied goodies with a pint of beer.

Red Door will no longer be hosting yoga on Sundays.

Rio Bravo Brewing Company — (505) 900-3909

(Mon–Thu noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–11 p.m., Sun noon–9 p.m.)

Beers: Rio Bravo Amber, Karl’s Hefeweizen, Dirty Rotten Bastard IPA, Snakebite IPA, Black Angus Stout, Road Runner Red, Duke City Pils, Oktoberfest, Old Town Porter (regular and barrel aged), Barley Wine (regular and barrel aged). You can find Rio Bravo at 1912 2nd St. NW, which is just south of I-40. The most recent additions are the Old Town Porter (7.6% ABV, 55 IBU) and Barley Wine (10.5% ABV, 39 IBU), available in tasty regular format and in the more potent barrel-aged versions. Get ’em quick, because both batches will go fast. Look for another barrel-aged beer after Christmas, which the Crew might just have a hand in brewing (more on that soon, we promise). As for the regular lineup, the Amber (5.7% ABV, 53 IBU) offers up a more flavorful kick than most of its genre. The Hefeweizen (4.6% ABV, 26 IBU) has a big banana aroma, but the flavor is more balanced and smooth. Dirty Rotten Bastard (6.4% ABV, 77 IBU) is a “level one” IPA. Columbus is the primary hop in the DRB. Snakebite (7.4% ABV, 99 IBU) is the bigger “level two” IPA, armed with Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, and Crystal hops. Another addition to the regular lineup is the burly Black Angus Stout (5.9% ABV, 25 IBU). It is not a milk stout, cream stout, chocolate stout, or coffee stout. It is just a stout, thick and strong with prominent roasted flavors, somewhat similar to Deschutes’ Obsidian Stout. Road Runner Red (5.7% ABV, 53 IBU) made a solid debut at MWBF.

It is nearly out at Nob Hill, with Luna ready to replace it, so hurry over. Still hanging around are the Dark Horse Lager (5.6% ABV) and Summer Ale (7% ABV). The Ruggles (4.4% ABV) is a California Common-style beer. Berliner Weisse (5.1% ABV) is still available at both locations.

Events: Kamikaze Karaoke is back tonight (Wednesday) at Wells Park starting at 8 p.m. Or you can head up to Nob Hill for the Heavenly Hosts Christmas Carolers at 7 p.m.

Saturday will feature the In the Mix series with DJ Clout spinning at 9 p.m. at Wells Park.

Eryn Bent’s Solo Album Release Party will be held at Wells Park on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The most recent additions are the Stranger Than Fiction, a Belgian-style IPA, the Bock Door Man (6.4% ABV), and the always beefy Russian Imperial (10% ABV). The McLeonard’s is a big old Scotch in the style of a Wee Heavy.

News: Brewer James Warren said he has a Belgian Quad and Blonde due up soon, plus a Barleywine.

The two new Study Series beers are both session ales, with the lighter Session 1 checking in at 3.4-percent ABV, while the darker Session 2 hits at 3.7 percent. Hair of the Wolf (7.7% ABV), a beer to benefit the local arts collective Meow Wolf, is back for a second run. Coming this Monday is the 2015 version of Goya Imperial Stout.

The fourth entry in the ECS (Ever Changing Series) is now available on tap and in bombers in the form of Belgian Dubbel. The Santa Fe Gold is now for sale all around the state in six-packs. The Adobe Igloo 2.0, an improved, spiced winter warmer, is now available on tap. The most recent addition is La Bete Noire, a black saison. The Snowflake is a hop-tastic DIPA that still has a good malt backbone.

Events: $1 off growler refills in the tasting room on Mondays. $2 pint Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 pint special in the tasting room. On Thursday, there will be $1 off growler refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

The newest additions to the lineup are Festivus, a special holiday ale, and old favorite Rod’s Best Bitter. The Pivotal IPA and Boneshaker Bitter are often available for purchase in four-packs of cans.

Events: There will be live music on a Wednesday at the original location as the Kodama Trio performs the music from a “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Then on Saturday, Jono Manson is at the original location and The Shiners Club will perform at the Railyard.

Every Tuesday night, the Railyard location will have Open Mic Night hosted by Ben Wright. Every Thursday night, Geeks Who Drink will be at the Railyard at 8 p.m.

Located in Socorro at 115 Abeyta St. W, Twisted Chile is the first brewery there to brew on site since Socorro Springs outsourced their brewing to Eddyline in Colorado several years ago. I got to head down there recently and enjoyed all the beers I sampled. Kudos to Twisted Chile for bring quality craft beers back to a town that needed ’em. The newest beers on tap are the Porter and Oktoberfest, and the excellent Irish Stout is back after a short absence. Look for a Pumpkin Ale soon.
