Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, and one in Las Cruces also joining the party.

Man, there is so much to cover again this week, what shall be the lead? Well, if you have been following us for the past six-plus years … OF COURSE IT’S THE METAL SHOW. Yes, metal is back at a brewery, only this time it is up in Santa Fe at Tumbleroot’s location on Agua Fria. This special Black Metal Takeover on Monday opens at 7:30, with tickets costing a measly $10. That gets you in to see Santa Fe’s own malevolent masters of metal, Dysphotic, as well as the new local group, Heretical Sect, featuring members of Superstition and ex-Predatory Light. Two traveling bands will also be on hand, with both hailing from the frozen wasteland, er, picturesque Midwestern state of Minnesota. Ashbringer and Amiensus are coming a long way to melt some faces, so make sure to load up your crew and head to Santa Fe for this epic set. Plus, it is a perfectly good excuse to finally try Tumbleroot if you have not been there yet.

As we noted, that is hardly the only big event this weekend. High and Dry is hosting Second Street as its guest brewery of the month, and there will be a special launch party tonight. Today will also feature a special ticket party for Saturday’s Albuquerque Hopfest, hosted by Steel Bender. That fun kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday night will see the First Friday Artwalk in downtown ABQ, with Boese Brothers, Sidetrack, and the Duel taproom all participating with art shows and live music. Saturday will of course feature Hopfest taking over the Isleta Casino, and we will have a full preview of that later this week. Finally, Sunday will see the new Crafts, Crops & Hops Autumn Beer Market at Canteen from noon to 7, with live green chile roasting, live music, multiple vendors, and, of course, delicious beer. No rest for the wicked this week, people.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bow & Arrow is releasing Peach Cosmic Arrow on tap and in bottles on Saturday. Boxing Bear sticks with its haze phase with MurkQueño Hazy IPA going on tap this Friday. Canteen brings back Raspberry Wheat and Fill in the Blanco (White IPA). Dialogue has a trio of newbies in What’s Golden Ale, Strazberry Berliner, and Young Guns Dank Wet Hop IPA. Kilt Check resurrects two old favorites in Covfefe Hefe and McRojo or No?. La Cumbre rolls out Quick and Easy Pale Ale, plus that delicious Dortmunder is on at both taprooms now. Marble added more Desert Fog, plus the Eastside IPA is now on tap. Sidetrack has more CO-MO IPA to keep everyone happy. Steel Bender goes big with the double release of Black (Hole Sun) IPA and OktoberFiesta on Thursday. The 377 should have more Ginger Beer and its Oktoberfest on tap by Friday. Toltec added a Mojito Kettle Sour a little while ago, and Dr. Rudi Single Hop should be out today. Tractor tapped this year’s batch of Traktoberfest on Tuesday, so get it while it’s fresh. Turtle Mountain has Tropical Menagerie and Macaulay Kolschin ready to go as soon as a couple taps open up, which should be this week.

It looks like the Easter Beer Egg Hunt is going to become an annual tradition. Back for a second year, the event will feature five downtown breweries/taprooms — Boese Brothers, Duel, Monks’ Corner, Red Door, and Sidetrack. That quintet will be hiding colored plastic Easter eggs all over downtown. Inside the eggs will be special prizes that can be redeemed at the different locations. This year there will be more eggs than last year, so no one should be left out. The rules are rather simple. No one starts before noon, and it will run until 5 p.m. Start at any brewery/taproom and head out. No more than three eggs can be redeemed at any location, so bring friends just in case you find a fourth egg for Sidetrack, for example. Let them redeem it. Everyone involved must be 21, of course. There is a map on the event’s Facebook page showing the area in which the eggs will be located. It basically runs from Second Street to Seventh Street, mainly around Central. Head on down and have fun this Saturday!

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Ale Republic puckers up with Bernalillo Weisse. Bombs Away drops Wild Card and The RED Ale on Friday. Bosque brings back Down in the Hollow. Bow & Arrow is releasing its Cosmic Arrow Brett Saison in bottles. Canteen has Pop’s Pilsner back Thursday. Dialogue dials up some Munich Dunkel, with Blood Orange Gose returning Friday. La Cumbre has Orange Choco Nitro Milk Stout on now, plus its awesome collaboration with Denver’s Comrade Brewing, Make IPA Clear Again, is out in cans and on tap this Friday. Marble has more White Out available, plus Session IPA, Double IPA, Nitro Pub Ale, and From the Wood Saison. Sidetrack has a fresh batch of Railhead Red. Steel Bender goes Out to Pasture with a new dry-hopped farmhouse ale, and Manana Tropical IPA returns Friday. Tractor is feeling summery with the new Lemon & Honey. Turtle Mountain is going the zero IBU route with its new Total Malarkey IPA this Sunday. Take note, this Saturday will also mark the arrival of Rosie the Riveter Session IPA, brewed by the local chapter of the Pink Boots Society at Tractor, but the beer will actually be available at multiple participating breweries.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street has fresh batches of Agua Fria Pilzner and Winter Warmer on tap.

Steel Can is a collaboration with Steel Bender, if the name was not a dead giveaway. The Oat Brown will run out Thursday, when Pop’s Pilsner returns just in time for baseball’s opening day. The most recent additions include the Czech Pilz, Rauchbier, Doppelbock, and California Common. The C-Thru is what it sounds like, a pale blonde stout with a heavy coffee aroma and flavor.

News: We are sad to report that Kaktus has closed its Nob Hill taproom. Try as the staff might, the location on Monte Vista simply could never get going. Thankfully, the main brewery is still going strong in Bernalillo!

Prior to that, the Pilsner and Hefeweizen were the most recent additions. Triple IPA will replace the BC Stout soon.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.

The City of Albuquerque is celebrating its vibrant downtown with an Artwalk the first Friday of every month, which just happens to fall this week. Naturally, the downtown breweries and taprooms are taking part. Boese Brothers, Sidetrack, the Duel taproom, and Monks’ Corner will all host artists and/or musicians throughout the night. Boese Brothers has a new Black IPA going on tap as the brewery hosts a photography exhibit by Donnie Valdez, plus DJ Burnt Reynolds will spin from 9 p.m. to midnight. Duel will feature Street Smarts 2, presented by Enchanted PopUp. The KS CREW will be the featured artist and DJ Clout will provide the music from 7 to midnight. Monks’ Corner will have live music from Sloan Armitage from 6 to 8 p.m. Sidetrack has Amanda Turri’s art opening, Transference: One Journey to the Next. Other locations taking part include Boiler Monkey, OT Circus Art Gallery, Paradise Club, and Zendo. Make sure to head downtown and support local artists, musicians, and breweries this Friday!

For our beer-loving friends in Santa Fe, head over to Blue Corn this Thursday for a special four-course collaboration dinner with Beneficial Farms. All of the dishes will be locally sourced, and Blue Corn will roll out the new Peaches and Cream Ale, while also tapping a special cask. The cost is just $45 per person, which is fairly inexpensive for a beer dinner these days. Head brewer Paul Mallory will be on hand to talk about why each dish and beer were paired together. Attendees can also meet farmer Thomas Swendson and his staff from Beneficial Farms.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Marble rolls out an old Crew favorite, Stout Americano, on tap and in bottles at all three locations today (Wednesday), with a special food pairing at each location from The Grove Cafe starting at 5 p.m. Ponderosa teamed up with General Mills for Toasted Cinnamon Stout, made with actual Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Steel Bender has a double release Thursday with Homegrown Pils and Centorado XPA. Turtle Mountain pulled a keg of Stuccon Saison out of the archives.

Up in Santa Fe, Blue Corn also gets ready for the Old Firm Derby with Glasgow Garnet Scotch Ale. Rowley Farmhouse Ales goes big with Aromatherapy IPA. Second Street unveils Kohatu IPA, while also bringing back Diablo Canyon Pale Ale, Outlier Special Bitter, and British Mild.

The Buzz Bomb has been one of the many beer highlights for Sidetrack Brewing over the last 12 months.

Sidetrack Brewing opened just a few blocks from Central Avenue, but lives in a different world. The little brewery that could has become a true neighborhood pub for the locals who have long since grown weary of the hustle and bustle of Old Route 66 and its trendy clubs and hip dive bars. This development for Sidetrack has gone (mostly) according to plan for co-owners Dan Herr and Anne O’Neill, who sat down with me recently for our Look Back/Look Ahead Series interview.

“It’s been going well,” Dan said. “We’ve always just kind of had this, I don’t know if you’d say inferiority complex or just an intimidation kind of situation, but just getting into this business has been a great adventure (even though) we didn’t know what to expect.

“The first year, I don’t think we could have asked for a better first year, and the second year was even better than that. So we’re grateful to have the business that we’ve had. We’re trying to just recognize who we are and who are patrons think we are and want us to be. That’s been the biggest thing, despite what you think your identity is or you want it to be, it is what it is, and it is what your customers say it is. We’ve been trying to recognize that and try to be as responsive and as accommodating as we can to the people that come and spend money here.”

That recognition for Sidetrack has meant a pivot back to what worked in the first place, a sort of simplicity that other breweries have long since abandoned.

“I think after our second year we tried a lot of things with events and with beer styles and beer releases, and we learned a lot through the daily business and those things that we tried,” Dan said. “I think what we learned is that we’re not really an event place. We are a place to come and chill and talk and that’s one of the things we really hoped to be, just a neighborhood pub, a gathering place for local folks. I think we are that. There are some details as to what that actually is that have to sink in over the course of a year.”

Dan said Sidetrack will try to focus on three major events per year, with the first being the anniversary party held every January. An autumn block party that also features neighboring businesses like the Orpheum, Sanitary Tortilla Factory, and Zendo will remain an annual event as well. A third event, likely for late spring or early summer, is still up in the air, but Dan said they are exploring their options there.

One thing that will continue is the bring-your-own vinyl night, which has quickly become the most popular weekly event. All the credit to that success goes to the Sidetrack beertenders.

“We’ve had really great success with the vinyl and with our fantastic staff that we have,” Dan said. “We’ve been really lucky and fortunate to find people that are tuned in and can really take the reins of driving this thing when we’re not here. They do a great job with the music. As simple as it sounds, the vinyl thing is really a draw for us. A lot of the success is due to the folks that we’ve got standing behind the bar. They know the cool stuff. We’re not the coolest people, Ann and I; we think we (still) are and we might have used to be, but we’re a bit out of touch these days. We’re happy to have those (staff members).”

The taproom remains one of the most chill places in town to enjoy a pint.

As for the beer, Sidetrack will continue to adapt to the tastes of its customers.

“Beer-wise in general, I think our first year we were just kind of learning everything,” Ann said. “We really played it safe and we just had the same rotating beers, we had a stout, we had a red, and a pale ale. We just kind of stayed safe with what we knew. The second year we finally started a lager. We started experimenting a little bit more (such as) Buzz Bomb. We just kind of gotten out there.”

Ann noted that Dan, who doubles as the head brewer, has also been playing around with the yeast strains and new hops that the brewery has been able to procure. Of course, as beer demand goes up, space becomes tighter and tighter.

“Our plan is not to expand or get bigger, except within ourselves at this point, even though we’re outgrowing our space,” Ann said. “We could use another fermenter. We find it hard to do lagers with just three fermenters. Finding that space in that little brewery is a challenge. I think for us it’s just keep working on our recipes, trying new things.”

Dan said that Sidetrack has no plans to get into keg distribution or anything like that. Right now, the only kegs sent off site are to Desert Dogs in Santa Fe, the taproom co-owned by nearby Boese Brothers. While Dan said he is grateful that George and Sam Boese are willing to do that for Sidetrack, it also shows him that distributing beer off such a small system can put a strain on the supply.

“We’re just trying to refine our little place here,” Dan said. “That goes for the taproom, as far as the physical parts of the taproom, and just the day-to-day business and events and how we treat our patrons. The beers, we’re just trying to evolve. My hope this year is to keep two IPAs on draft at all times. We’ve found, for better or worse, is that IPA is what people want. So the better we can do with keeping that demand met, the smoother things run for us.”

Ye ole phone camera did not want to focus too well, but that blue line in the basement is where the walk-in cooler will soon reach out towards.

There will be some on-site construction going on in 2018, though few customers figure to notice. Dan said they plan to expand the walk-in cooler in the basement beneath the taproom, while adding some additional plumbing to help things run more smoothly. In turn, that should enable Sidetrack to expand its draft tower from six taps to eight or 10.

“We’re just able to maintain this space,” Ann said. “Beer-wise and everything, with our system and how small we are, we couldn’t add accounts or anything. A lot of people ask, but we can only do so much.”

All of that simply fits with the original plan for Sidetrack.

“That was sort of the vision from the very beginning, the corner taproom,” Dan said. “We’ve been well received, I think, as being that. We get good feedback as far as the look of the place, the fact we don’t have a television, and the fact that our staff is attentive and courteous. It’s just all the very simple things that seem to be appealing to folks.”

There has been one positive development for Sidetrack outside the four walls of its taproom. Ann has been a sitting member of the New Mexico Brewers Guild board of directors for a while now, and she has been named president for 2018.

“I think the nice thing about me being on the board starting last year (2016), we’re a small place and many of the members are bigger places, so I’m kind of representing and looking out for the smaller brewers and what they need as well,” Ann said. “It’s nice having that balance of where we’re all very different sizes and (objectives). Some are into expanding and distributing, while some of us just want to have a taproom and we’re happy with that. (We’re) having a voice on the board for all the smaller brewers.”

As for that aforementioned second anniversary party, it will go down this Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. There will be live music from AJ Woods (2-4 p.m.), Brian McDaniel (5-7 p.m.), and Cooper CW Ayon (8-10 p.m.). Malaguena’s Latin Tapas will be serving food all day. There will also be two special beers on cask (Pub Ale with Earl Grey Tea and the new IPA dry hopped with Simcoe) and two more on tap.

Nothing beats a stout straight from the barrel, all thanks to brewer/co-owner Dan Herr.

“On tap literally we’re going to try to bring two new beers out,” Dan said. “We’ve got an IPA (Locomotive Breath) that we’re going to try to release on that Saturday. Then we’ve got just the infancy of our micro barrel program. We’ve got a stout that we are hoping is ready. … We’re going to carbonate a keg of that and have that available.

“Otherwise, we’ve got three bands that are going to be playing throughout the day. They’re just tiny bands that are the size of our taproom, so they’re basically just one-man shows. We’ll set them up in the back corner. Then we’ll have a live screen printing guy coming in. We’ve got a graphic we’re developing for an anniversary T-shirt.”

I was lucky enough to try that Single Barrel Stout right out of the barrel. It has a big, boozy aroma, but the flavor is not too hot. Instead it is just smooth and decadent, the kind of good sipping beer perfect for a chilly winter afternoon.

A big thanks to Dan and Ann for taking the time out of their day before the brewery even opened its doors. That, and the sample out of the barrel, was a nice gesture and greatly appreciated.

The Crew had just a wee bit of fun at WinterBrew.

After taking Monday off due to the holiday, we are back today with a look at what were the best beers that we tried up at WinterBrew back on Friday. It was another outstanding event, one that every craft beer lover in New Mexico should attend at least once. The sell-out crowd of 700 was a jovial bunch, enjoying the many unique beers being poured from 18 New Mexico breweries.

As for the Crew, well, we all had our favorites. If the others want to chime in here at some point, I will add them to the story. In the interest of not going two weekdays in a row without content, here are a few of my picks for the best of the fest. (Note: Due in part to the Rail Runner arriving in Santa Fe about 10 minutes late and then the decision by security to close all booths 30 minutes before the event was supposed to end, I did not get to all 18 breweries.)

A crowd of 700-plus enjoyed beers from 18 breweries.

La Santa Oscura, Blue Corn: This is a delightful spiced holiday black lager that is still on tap at the brewery in Santa Fe. Flavors of chocolate and cherry mix in with the Chimayo red chile for a nice, warm kick at the end.

Coyote Waits, Bow & Arrow: At last, I got my hands on the barrel-aged version of this imperial mole stout. It is a big, thick beast of a beer, and the barrel effects bring out more and more of the spice, yet it never overwhelms the palate. It is still available at the brewery.

Galactica DIPA, Marble: Apparently this single-hop, double IPA thing is becoming a trend. Even with just Galaxy, this is a complex, wonderfully big beer. It is not yet on tap at any Marble location, so drink up the rest so a handle becomes available.

Sin Barreras, Rowley Farmhouse Ales: Alas, this specialty imperial stout does not appear to be available at the brewery, but everyone can hope for its eventual appearance. Big flavors of coconut and maple left us all wondering, is it a breakfast beer or a dessert beer?

14K IPA, Santa Fe: This one was a bit of a one-off joke, but it still leaves us hopeful for a future edition of an imperial-strength version of the hugely popular 7K. We would also like to thank the SFBC staff for donating a couple of sixers of 7K to our beer fridges.

XX ESB and Breaking Plaid Scotch Ale, Second Street: A pair of big, malty brews from the new Rufina brewhouse caught our eye. The latter is more sweet than peaty, akin to a heftier version of the Scottish at Nexus. The best news, besides being on tap, is that some of the Plaid is being saved for barrel aging.

Dark Engine Stout on cask, Sidetrack: If you have never had any of the cask beers at Sidetrack, now is the time. There is a batch currently available with dark chocolate added to the beer for an even more decadent flavor.

The Judy, Steel Bender: At some point a break was needed from the big malts and hops, so this seemed like a perfect time to try this sweet saison made with peaches and brett, then aged in Chardonnay barrels. There are still a few bottles left for sale at the brewery, so get them fast, as they are quite worth it. Drink this and dream of spring.

2017 Barleywine, Taos Mesa: Our friends from the north came down not with White Walkers, but instead a different beast. It is big, boozy, and not for the faint of heart. On your next ski trip (assuming we ever get snow), make sure to check this one out.

Infinitesimus Imperial Stout, Turtle Mountain: One of the first big beers we tried was this heavy, chocolate-y behemoth. This is more than worth the trip out to Rio Rancho for anyone living on the East Side of Albuquerque. Or the West Side. Or the South Valley. Or, really, anywhere in the state.

We’re pretty sure Karim liked most of the beers he tried.

As for the rest of the Crew, as their thoughts trickle in, I will share them here:

Jerrad: WinterBrew 2018 was certainly a memorable night, perhaps a bit fuzzy after tasting a few of the killer imperial/double styles available. The libations that stood out for me at this event would have to be Bow & Arrow’s Coyote Waits BA Stout, with its smooth touch of spicy heat on oak and dark/roasty malts. On the other end of the spectrum, Bombs Away Brewing Company’s B.A.B.C. IPA was wonderful with its hazy, softer NE-style IPA approach. A few other notable mentions would go to Rowley Farmhouse Ale’s Aromatherapy IPA, Steel Bender Brewing’s The Judy saison, and Rio Bravo Brewing’s Grab ‘Em by the Putin Imperial Russian stout.

Kristin: While I couldn’t try that many beers since I was working the event, I loved Second Street’s Breaking Plaid Scottish. The smooth malty flavor masked its 9.1-percent ABV. This is both a good and bad thing.

The good news is that the beer lineup at WinterBrew looks excellent. The bad news is that the event is sold out. For those who got tickets, well, here ya go, the full slate of beers that have been reported to the Crew.

There are 18 local breweries attending from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Santa Fe Farmers Market. Most of the Crew will be taking the Rail Runner north, which departs the Los Ranchos station at approximately 4:41 p.m., dropping us off around 6. If you are going, and want to hang on the train, we will be in the last car.

Anyway, what you really want is a list of the beers being poured. We have 17 of the 18 breweries so far, and will continue to update this as more lists appear in our email inbox. To help everyone out, we are picking the top beer on our list for each brewery, either one we have had before or one we are dying to try. Remember, that’s just our opinion, you are totally free to disagree and drink something else instead.

Top pick: La Santa Oscura. Luke swears by this holiday-themed dark lager. Cocoa nibs, lactose, cinnamon, and Chimayo red chile add to the fun.

The rest: Blue Corn Mexican Lager, Roadrunner IPA, Oatmeal Stout

Bombs Away

Top pick: Coffee Stout. This one is so new it doesn’t even have an official name, but it could wind up being called Shockwave. Or, we’ll just probably go with delicious.

The rest: Willie Pete Wit, BABC IPA, Bombshell IPL

Bosque

Top pick: Fresh Start Breakfast Ale. We have sung the praises of this maple-and-coffee delight of a stout many times. This is the last of it, so be prepared to fight us for the last pour.

The rest: (deep breath) Lager, 1888 Blonde Ale, Elephants on Parade, Scotia, IPA, Down in the Hollow Brown, Open Space Haze 120 West and 41 South, Honey Porter, Nathan Ginger Red Ale, Galaxy Far Far Away

Bow & Arrow

Top pick: Coyote Waits. The barrel-aged imperial mole stout is back, with that wonderful kick of spice mixed in.

The rest: Savage Times Sour IPA, Thirsty Land Foraged Series (Grisette with Navajo Tea), Nomadico IPA

Boxing Bear

Top pick: Low Rye-der IPA. Hey, it’s new for us, so we will jump on a new dose of hops with copious amounts of rye mixed in, at least as a break from the big and malty.

The rest: Featherweight Session IPA, Iron Lung Smoked Porter, Uppercut IPA, Chocolate Milk Stout

Duel

Top pick: Grunewald Imperial Porter. It has been a while since we have had this behemoth of a beer. The best part is if we like it as much as the last batch, we can always head to the brewery (or taproom) to pick up a bomber to take home. Take note, this and the Titian will not be tapped until after 6:30 p.m.

The rest: Bad Amber, Duchamp, Fiction, Cezanne Magnifique, Dark Ryder, Titian

La Cumbre

Top pick: Business Hammock. Yet another tasty, hazy IPA, this one will make its debut mere hours after another, In the Money, goes on tap and for sale in bombers down at the brewery. Double up on the juice!

The rest: A Slice of Hefen, Malpais Stout, Project Dank, Mind Phoq

Marble

Top pick: Galactica DIPA. OK, so apparently the big, hoppy beers are not as rare as we anticipated. That being said, of course we will snag some of this out-of-this-world hop bomb.

The rest: Double White, Pilsner, Imperial Red, Cholo Smooth

Rio Bravo

Top pick: Level 3 IPA. The brewery just redid the recipe for this one, so we are intrigued to see what the staff has created.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.

Summer is a great time for breweries and charities to team up, with $1 from pints sold going to good causes across the city and country. Bosque has had Polly’s Wheaty Lager on for some time. Proceeds from that beer go to Polly’s Run, a charity working to stop pancreatic cancer. Sidetrack is tapping the new Golden WHEELS Ale this week. It was brewed to help raise funds for the new WHEELS Museum to get its doors open. For anyone who missed the recent Wheels of Soul Tapping Party at The Rail Yards, the special beers brewed by participating breweries are starting to go on tap around town. Steel Bender is already putting Wheels of Soul Black (Hole Sun) IPA on tap. Again, a dollar from every pint sold goes to fund Mr. Holland’s Opus, which donates new musical equipment to schools in need. Rio Bravo is selling Penguin Lager on tap and in four-packs. Proceeds go to the new penguin exhibit at the zoo. If there are any other breweries out there right now with a charity-linked beer on tap, or planning one in the near future, let the Crew know and we will be sure to share it with everyone!

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Thanks to the magic of Instagram, we know that Ale Republic has brought back Strong Dark and Handsome, plus they have the new Red Mountain and Cafe Con Beer. Bosque has added the Blood Orange Exotic Elephants, plus Bosque Blonde and the new (and weird) Beernana Split. Boxing Bear is feeling thunderstruck with Tropic Thunder IPA. Drafty Kilt beat everyone else to the punch in naming their new wheat beer Covfefe Hefe. La Cumbre brings back the delicious Miles From Cologne in time for all this heat. Marble has added Cherry Gose, Plum Gose, 522 DIPA, and Grungeist Pilsner. Rio Bravo should have Hibiscus Ale and Cherry Wheat on by the weekend. Sidetrack also has a fresh batch of Pub Ale. Tractor gets out there with Thai Basil Mint Cider. Turtle Mountain is the latest brewery to have the collaborative brew Improvisation Ale on tap, plus My Kolsche will be ready soon.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Socorro, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.

Once again, our breweries are stepping up to help out various charities this weekend. One event is Saturday, the other three are Sunday. First up, Sidetrack is hosting the Downtown Grower’s Market Launch Party fundraiser from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday. There will be raffle prizes, multiple food trucks and other local vendors, and a full musical lineup including Kathleen Smith at 2 p.m., Kevin Herig at 4 p.m., and The Squash Blossom Boys at 6 p.m. For every Sidetrack pint you buy, $1 will go to the market. Then on Sunday at 1 p.m., Marble hosts the Casa Barelas fundraiser, also with $1 from every beer going to the charity, which provides classes in arts and culture to children and adults in the Barelas community. My Sweet Basil will be parked outside, and there will be live performances by DJ Halcyon, Baracutanga, and youth folklorico and guitar players. That same day, Tractor Wells Park hosts the Don’t Frack with Chaco Canyon fundraiser at 3 p.m. There will be food trucks, vendors, and live music. It costs $5, but all of the door proceeds will go to Environment New Mexico, an organization dedicated to protecting our state’s natural resources from the dangers of fracking. Innastate, The Jir Project, Rev The Music, and Kiko Villamizar will be performing. Not to leave Santa Fe out, Rowley Farmhouse Ales is having a Marble rare beer tap takeover on Sunday, and it will be combined with an adoption event for the Espanola Valley Humane Society from noon to 3 p.m. The beers will be available all day, including old favorite Double White, plus Bacon’s Best Friend, Blackberry Gose, The Golden Ape, Northeast by Northeast IPA, and Woodshed Double Red. A portion of the proceeds from the beer sales will go to the EVHS. Get out there and enjoy a couple beers for a good cause this weekend!

On the new beer front this week, there are a few additional options to check out. Bosque unleashes another lupulin-powder-powered beer, Sticky Fingers IPL. Boxing Bear brings back a gold medalist in The Red Glove, plus Black and Blue Sour returns Saturday both on tap and now in bombers. Canteen has a fresh batch of Exodus IPA, plus Malt Madness is underway again. Chama River recently added The Incredible Kolsch, while Seasoned Strop Belgian DIPA is back. La Cumbre sticks with its recent German theme with Ein Beer Bitte! Marble has Wheat Out on tap at two taprooms, with Brown Rye debuting at the Heights location. Ponderosa’s 200th beer, a Baltic porter, will be released this week. Quarter Celtic tells everyone to Czech it Bro. Sidetrack introduces Chinook IPA and Coal Bank Stout. Turtle Mountain hops to it with Good Ol’ Brown IPA.

Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales says Good on Ya. Santa Fe brought back Western Bloc IPA over the weekend. Second Street resurrects a hoppy favorite in Fulcrum IPA.

Our sixth annual Stout Challenge brought about a sixth different winner.

Our sixth annual Stout Challenge brought about a sixth different winner.

Amid all the seriousness of the weekend, the Brew Crew was still able to gather to hold our annual Stout Challenge before the start of the Super Bowl. While the game featured an improbable rally by the favorite, our blind taste test featured an upset by one of the newer breweries in town.

For the sixth time, we have a new winner. A past winner came oh-so-close to becoming our first two-time champion. We structure the event similar to the IPA Challenge, but with variations. We go around the day of the event, fill our half-growlers (or full growlers for last year’s top finishers), and then bring them to Franz Solo’s house. Our friend Margaret then pours them into numbered glasses out of sight, and we try them one by one, rather than put all on a tray. We take notes and score them from zero to five points in the categories of aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and finish, and add them up.

We were short quite a few Crew members this year. Illness knocked out Brandon, Luke, and Shawna. E-Rock was unable to make it back from his musical adventures in Texas in time. Shilling was studying. Porter Pounder was on the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise again. Thus, only myself, Franz, Mrs. Solo, Kristin, and guest judge Tim (Margaret’s husband) were available.

Also, after reporting 16 stouts Friday, we ended up two shy, as Bow & Arrow did not open until it was too late for us to pick up their Storm & Hearth, and Twisted Chile was unable to deliver their Irish stout from Socorro.

As always, these are our opinions. We could be wrong.

14. Cazuela’s Beer for my Horses (19.5 points): This was the only truly disappointing stout among the batch. The flavor was almost sour (my opinion) or salty (Franz’s opinion). It was too thin in the mouthfeel. We have no idea what happened with this batch.

13. Santa Fe Dysphotic Stout (45.5): None of us disliked this robust, almost hop-forward stout, it was just that when stacked up against a field of mostly oatmeal variants, it stood out almost as more of a black IPA than anything. Basically, it is a stout that stands alone in the current available field in the ABQ metro area.

12. Rio Bravo Oatmeal Stout (46): While it did not move up in the standings that much, Rio Bravo’s entry scored much better this time around. The aroma scored the highest, with some mixed feelings on the flavor and mouthfeel. Overall it just came off as a bit light for what we look for in a stout.

11. Boxing Bear Standing 8 Stout (47.5): Every year there seems to be one of the top stouts from the previous year that falls way down the ladder. The main complaint here was in the bitter, overly smoky flavor, aroma, and mouthfeel. It was similar to Dysphotic, but with more malt and less hops.

10. Bosque Driftwood Oatmeal Stout (48): We found this batch to be a little on the thin side, with the most negative marks coming in terms of its mouthfeel, or lack thereof. The flavor was good, quite a bit sweet up front, but it faded pretty quickly.

9. Turtle Mountain Stauffenberg Stout (52.5): This was the first stout we sampled, so in many ways, it served as the base line for all that followed. In general everyone liked it, though it was noted as being just a tad short in all four categories. Still, we would call it perfectly drinkable.

8. Sidetrack Stoker Stout (53): A significant improvement on their stout from last year, this batch was quite a bit smokier and more roasted. Those were probably the biggest attributes, good or bad, with our voters.

7. The 377 Full Booty Stout (56): The top word used to describe our newest brewery’s oatmeal stout was “dry,” which accounted for much of the flavor and mouthfeel for folks. Some scored that well, others did not. The thickness of the mouthfeel scored the highest with most of us.

6. Chama River Sleeping Dog Stout (58): The 2016 champion could not pull off the repeat. The flavor and aroma this time around was sweet, with a pronounced vanilla element, but otherwise it lacked enough mouthfeel and overall complexity. It remains quite good, but not quite on par with last year.

5. Marble Oatmeal Stout (59): If there is a stout deserving of the title of “old reliable,” it is our 2012 champion, which still ranks among the best in town. There was a sweet, almost vanilla flavor and aroma at the front. The mouthfeel and finish saw some contrasting opinions with the five of us.

4. La Cumbre Malpais Stout (61): Unlike most La Cumbre beers, this did not have much of an aroma to draw you in. It did have a smokier, heavier flavor, scoring highest in mouthfeel and finish. The 2013 champion remains one of the best in town, though it is definitely not for those who like their stouts sweeter.

3. Canteen Dark n’ Lusty Stout (62.5): No stout has yo-yoed up and down more in our Stout Challenge the last six years than Canteen’s staple. It has finished seventh (out of eight), fifth (out of 10), 10th (out of 10), second (out of 14), 11th (out of 14), and now it’s third. This batch had a lot of chocolate flavor. It was sweet and solid, but just lacked the flavor complexity to claim its first title.

2. Tractor Double Plow Oatmeal Stout (70): My personal favorite in the bunch, it came up just short of being our first two-time winner (2014 was its previous victory). That cookie dough-like flavor was back at the front, with lots of chocolate up front and hints of smoke on the back end. The mouthfeel was solid throughout.

1. Starr Brothers Foggy Monocle (71.5): First Stout Challenge, first victory! Brewer Rob Whitlock said he actually prefers his Roisin Dubh, an Irish dry stout, to this. Guess he will have to change his mind now. The flavor (roasty coffee) and mouthfeel (thick and creamy smooth) scored especially high with our group.

We will have our Stout Challenge helmet trophy ready soon to be presented to Starr Brothers. Congrats to Rob and their entire staff!

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Socorro, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.

This anniversary party thing is gaining steam. Last week, it was Duel’s ABQ taproom and, well, us, but this week it’s Sidetrack’s turn. The downtown brewery actually turned one year old back at the start of the month, but they waited until this coming football-less weekend to host a celebration. They are going all-out in their small space, so let us hope the weather holds off so the patio can be used. There will be three new beers on tap — Stoker Stout, 2926 Steam Lager, The Red Line — with the stout and red also available on cask. My Sweet Basil, everyone’s favorite food truck, will be on hand to have special pairings to go with the new beers. There will also be live music throughout the day, plus stand-up comedy as well. There will be anniversary T-shirts for sale for $12 and special giveaways throughout the day. It all starts at 2 p.m. and runs until 11.

For our friends up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales is also having a bit of fun this week. Tonight from 6 to 11, RFA is taking five (!) beers to Violet Crown Cinemas for a mini tap takeover. They will have Fields of Rye, Saison du Sarlacc (dry-hopped), Josephus (imperial American brown), Babyhands (saison with Clementines), and Ab Initio (Berliner Weisse with passion fruit). The fact they named a beer Josephus … nothing beats a History of the World Part One reference. Nothing.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few new options to check out. Bosque has Caldera, an English brown on nitro (get it fast, their nitro tap has been getting drained rapidly). Bow & Arrow will have a new IPA available by the end of the week. Canteen brings back Falconer’s Pale Ale, plus they have an Oud Bruin debuting today. Dialogue is feeling sessionable on those new taproom couches with their Golden Ale. Flix Brewhouse rolls out Word is Blond Belgian and January Embers English Barleywine. Marble takes a cue from us with Dark Strong and Barkin’ Clark Dark, while Rouge L’Orange offers up something lighter at the Westside Taproom. The #GFF is back at Quarter Celtic. The 377 flies in with Funky Punk Swartzbier.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street will have fresh batches of Cereza Negra, Rod’s Best Bitter, and Red and Yellow Armadillo out later this week.

The latest entry in the Ever Changing Series, Dysphotic Stout, is basically the Black Beast of AAAAHHHH. Snowflake IPA is back, now part of a series of seasonal-themed IPAs called the In-and-Out Series. Adobe Igloo is back on tap and in six packs.

Happy Hour/Discounts: $1 off growler refills in the tasting room on Mondays. $2 pint Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 pint special in the tasting room. On Thursday, there will be $1 off growler refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.
