The last and arguably best NM beer festival of the year is this weekend!

If your favorite brewery’s staff has a little extra kick in their step these days, it is probably because they all know that the final festival of the season is almost upon us. NM Brew Fest 6 is set for this Saturday at the State Fairgrounds from 1 to 6 p.m. (or 11:30 a.m. if you get a VIP ticket).

To get the lowdown on what is new and/or different this year from years past, I talked to NM Brewers Guild director Chris Goblet a while back.

“New Mexico Brew Fest 6, we got through five years, which is a great milestone for the Guild,” Goblet said. “This year the Guild has partnered with Hoppervision, who created New Mexico Brew Fest back in 2009. I kind of took the reins this year again and decided to follow the trail of legislation that we passed and focus on the reciprocity bill. So we’ve got four distilleries, a cider maker and a winery, and we’ll have 25 breweries. It kind of plays off this whole idea of drink local, which is our theme this year.”

A huge question with any VIP/early entry type of ticket is always what does someone get as a bonus with the extra money paid. Last year it was access to some rare, barrel-aged beers, that left a few of us (myself included) feeling a little overwhelmed later on.

“So for your early-bird entry, in addition to a number of specialty beers, you’re also going have your choice of a Blood Mary or a Beermosa to start the day,” Goblet said. “A beer festival that starts you off with a cocktail or champagne-beer concoction, not a bad way to begin the day.  Instead of being limited to a single beer station, Early Birds will have access to all of the breweries, wineries, and distilleries for that first hour.

“I really wanted to hype up the fact that we’re all manufacturing centers working together, playing together. We want this to become the largest local libations festival in New Mexico, so that every year we can grow and feature the new start-up producers. Our festival is a showcase of New Mexico-made alcohol.”

Another past problem with NMBF has been alleviated in terms of the space allotted.

“The big other change this year is we’re no longer in Villa Hispana,” Goblet said. “We’re going to move the festival to main street. It’s going to give us more square footage to accommodate up to 10,000 people. And we can have all the brewery trucks drive right into the festival to park.”

Of course, we know a major part of any event preview is to track down who is pouring what beers. The good news is that three of the four NM beers that won medals at the Great American Beer Festival will be available, as well as beers from BJ’s that won medals. These are all the lineups we received from attending breweries:

If I absolutely had to pick one beer that is not to be missed, it would be The Preachers Share, a barrel-aged imperial stout, at Second Street. Of course, that is probably the beer that did in the Crew in years past, so be careful.

Just embrace the beer and the metal and everything will be just fine during your stay in Albuquerque.

It’s that time of year again, when lots of folks from outside Albuquerque and New Mexico descend upon the Duke City for the Balloon Fiesta. While a lot of us locals grumble about the increase in traffic, even we’re big softies for the Fiesta (assuming we wake up in time). Well, we are, our dogs are not. They’re huddling in the corner thinking the end times are upon us.

Anyway, with all these newcomers visiting ABQ, and balloons not flying 24-7, they will all need something to do. So for our regular readers, there won’t be much here that you don’t already know. But if you have people in from out of town asking you, “What else is there to do here?” well now you have this post to show them that there is more to this town than balloons, green chile, and “Better Call Saul.”

We’ve updated this for 2015, since we’ve added just a few new breweries. If you’re just interested in the current slate of seasonal beers, as always, check out The Week Ahead in Beer. That feature runs every Wednesday.

Bosque Brewing: (Original location) Located at 8900 San Mateo, Bosque is by far the closest to all the balloon action. Heck, you can walk there if you want to. The easiest way to get to Bosque is to take I-25 and get off at Alameda and go west, just like you would go to Balloon Fiesta Park. San Mateo is the first red light you’ll encounter and if you take a right and go north, Bosque will be ahead on your right. Bosque is not a huge place, so don’t be surprised if it gets crowded around happy hour. They have a menu of sandwiches and other items to munch on to keep your belly full. On the beer side, Bosque has been one of the biggest winners so far in 2015. Their Scale Tipper won both the National IPA Challenge and the New Mexico IPA Challenge (two years in a row). The Acequia IPA just claimed a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in the Wet Hop Ale category. Both are available on tap and are for sale in bombers. Other top options from the regular menu are the Riverwalker IPA, Scotia Scotch Ale, and Driftwood Oatmeal Stout.

Kaktus Brewing: Just to the north of Albuquerque is the small town of Bernalillo, which has one brewery. Located at 471 South Hill Road, you can access it easily from the Highway 550 exit off I-25. Head west on 550 and then take a left and go south at Hill, which is the first red light you will encounter. Kaktus will be down the road on your right. A quaint, unique setting, Kaktus has rotating lineup of quality beers and a small food menu. We recommend the Full Bodied Stout, Berna Brown, and the Helles Lager, which is one of the better lighter (in color, not flavor) beers around. In addition to the Fiesta, you can also celebrate Kaktoberfest this Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. with live music, food specials, and plenty of beer.

Sandia Chile Grill: Located near the intersection of San Antonio and Wyoming, SCG is a restaurant with a small but good selection of beers. If you get off I-25 at San Antonio and head east, there is a shopping center on the northeast corner of SA and Wyoming just a mile-plus up the road. SCG is located near a Subway and the Sports and Wellness, behind the McDonald’s and Walgreens. We endorse the Rio Negro Stout, Red Ranger Irish Red, and Barb’s Barrel Hefeweizen, though the lineup tends to change a lot. If they have any of their meads available, get them, they have won some awards. SCG also has a smoker now, so check out some outstanding smoked meat dishes.

Albuquerque Brewing: The newest brewery in the area, ABC is located along the I-25 frontage road on the east side between Paseo del Norte and Alameda. You can also access the brewery via Wilshire Ave. from San Pedro. They recently changed brewers, so a new lineup should be available soon. They do not have food, but there is often a food truck parked out front.

Breweries in the far Northeast Heights

Lizard Tail: If you feel like getting away from the more crowded areas, head east on Montgomery until you reach the intersection with Eubank. Located in a shopping center on the southeast corner with a Pelican’s and the Dirty Bourbon Dance Hall (for country music lovers only), Lizard Tail is a neighborhood pub. They have a little food, but it’s mostly about the beer, which is more malt-forward than hoppy. The Belgian Abbey and Rye Stout are worth trying. If you do need some hops, go for the IPA or India Black Ale.

Breweries along the I-25 corridor

Most of these breweries can be accessed off the freeway between the Jefferson, Montgomery/Montano, and Comanche/Candelaria exits. Two are visible from the freeway, the others are tucked away but are very much worth making an effort to find.

Chama River: Right next to the Century Rio 24 movie theater is one of ABQ’s oldest and most respected breweries. You can access it via the Jefferson exit and the southbound frontage road. Chama is a restaurant with a full menu featuring a wide array of food. If you’re on a budget, it’s a good place to splurge. Personally, I think they might have the best BBQ ribs in town. On the beer side of things, Chama’s selection is plentiful, but not overly heavy. The Sleeping Dog Stout is a personal favorite. The Jackalope IPA, Rio Lodo Brown Ale, and Rio Chama Amber Ale are also popular. The current seasonal lineup includes the tasty Oxbow ESB ale and the Radioactive IPA.

Nexus Brewery: Located on the east side of the freeway, you can access Nexus via the northbound frontage road just north of the Montgomery/Montano exit. Also a restaurant, Nexus is unique in New Mexico for its soul food-style menu. The chicken and waffles is among the most popular dishes you will find in town. The food alone is well worth a visit, but make sure to try the beer while you’re there. The Scotch Ale, Cream Ale, Chocolate Porter, and IPA are all popular with customers. Nexus tends to be a more malt-forward brewery.

Canteen Brewhouse: One of two breweries tucked away in an industrial area located between Candelaria to the south and Comanche to the north (officially known as “The Brewery District”), you can find the Canteen Brewhouse (formerly Il Vicino Brewery Canteen) on Aztec Road. If you take the frontage road northbound, Aztec will be on your right as you go from Candelaria to Comanche. Head east a few blocks and the Canteen will be on your left. The Canteen usually has a huge selection of seasonals. There is a small menu of sandwiches (try the Piggly Wiggly, a pulled pork monstrosity) and other snack items. For beer, you can go with the popular IPA, Brown, and Stout. The current seasonal lineup includes the popular Irish Red.

La Cumbre: Just around the corner from Canteen is La Cumbre, one of the most highly regarded breweries in the state. If you love hops, this is your place to visit. The easiest way to find La Cumbre is to take Candelaria east from I-25 and then take a left (north) on Girard, which is the last street before you reach an overpass to cross a diversion channel. La Cumbre will be just north of Candelaria on the left (west) side of the street. Parking is mostly restricted around La Cumbre by the other businesses, so be careful not to park anywhere you might get towed. There is usually a food truck parked out front, but for the most part La Cumbre is a place to enjoy a pint or buy a growler or some bombers or four-packs of cans. The award-winning Elevated IPA tops the list of regular beers on tap, though I would also recommend the burly Malpais Stout. The current seasonal list includes the seasonal VMO #3, an Oktoberfest, and Full Nelson, a monstrous double IPA also available for sale in bombers.

Red Door: One of the newer breweries in Albuquerque, Red Door has become a popular destination at morning or night. It’s on Candelaria just west of I-25 on the north side of the street. There is usually a food truck parked out back for your culinary needs. Inside the spacious taproom, Red Door has a solid lineup of beers including the Roamer Red, Threshold IPA, and Paint it Black Milk Stout (served on nitro). Red Door also has one of the more potent ciders you can find in the Unhinged Cider (7.9% ABV). On the seasonal front, the Anniversary Double Red is a behemoth in flavor.

Distillery 365: Yes, they are first and foremost a distillery, but 365 also brews their own beers. They currently have an ESB and a strong ale. They are located on Stanford just south of Candelaria. Check out their popular Bloody Mary Bar on Sunday morning.

Breweries on the West Side

If you are staying west of the Rio Grande, the beer options are only getting better.

Pi Brewing: The brewery is operational, but all beers are served next door at Nicky V’s Neighborhood Pizzeria (same owners). They have a small but solid lineup, including the Challenge IPA, Amarillo Red, and Robust Porter. Of course, you can also chow down on lots of tasty Italian dishes at Nicky V’s. As for how to get there, Nicky V’s is located on Coors Blvd. just north of Paseo del Norte. The address is 9780 Coors on the east side of the road.

Boxing Bear: The biggest joint on the west side is Boxing Bear, which took over the old Elliott’s Bar space in the shopping center on the northeast corner of the intersection of Alameda and Coors/Corrales Road. There is a small menu of sandwiches and snacks. Brewer Justin Hamilton has made an impact with some big, bold beers. The Uppercut IPA packs a punch. The Standing 8 Stout and Hairy Mit Hefe are there if you don’t want to pummel your palate with too many hops.

Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill: Located on Sara Road just east of Rio Rancho Blvd./Highway 528, this Rio Rancho-based brewery is a full-on restaurant that also brews its own beer. The beer lineup changes from time to time, but at present we know the Chupacabra IPA, Panama Red Ale, Beer for My Horses Oatmeal Stout, and Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale are all on tap. Seasonals include Kilt Kicker, a smoked Scottish ale, and Calabaza, a pumpkin ale.

Turtle Mountain: One of the oldest and most respected breweries around, TMBC is located on Southern Blvd. just west of Highway 528 in Rio Rancho. Offering a full menu of awesome pizzas, calzones, sandwiches, and more, TMBC has plenty of culinary delights to go along with a strong lineup of beer created by new brewer Tim Woodward. Regular favorites include the Heidelberg Helles, Piedra Lisa Porter, Parasol White IPA, and McDay’s Cream Ale. The Oktoberfest tops the current seasonal list.

Marble Westside: The taproom is a hugely popular destination for beer drinkers, offering up most of the same beers as the main brewery downtown. Located just north of McMahon along Unser, they usually have a food truck out front and a lot of live music events.

Breweries in Uptown

The area around Coronado Mall and the Uptown Shopping Center, located between I-40 to the south and Menaul to the north along Louisiana Blvd., this is a popular destination for shoppers. There are not a lot of options here for beer, unfortunately.

ABQ Brew Pub: Featuring beers from Moriarty’s Rio Grande/Sierra Blanca Brewing (for those not in the know, Moriarty is a small town east of the Sandia Mountains along I-40), the Brew Pub has a solid food menu and more. Located on Uptown Blvd. just west of Louisiana, it shares a building with Uptown Sports Bar. Regular beers on tap include Rio Grande Outlaw Lager, Roswell Alien Amber, and the Pancho Verde Chile Cerveza. The Sierra Blanca Bonechiller Brown won a is a two-time medal winner at GABF, so make sure to check it out, too.

B.J.’s: It’s the big chain brewery/restaurant. It’s not local, so you can do better. Support local while you visit ABQ.

Breweries in Nob Hill

This is a very popular area located along Central between Girard on the west and Washington to the east. There are lots of shops and restaurants to visit.

Tractor: While the brewery is located near downtown (see below), the tap room has quickly become one of the most popular destinations in Nob Hill. Located at 118 Tulane SE, you can find Tractor fairly easily if you’re on Central. Just look for the Arby’s and/or Starbucks on the south side of Central. Tractor is located just behind Starbucks. The joint is jumping during happy hour and almost every night after 10 p.m., especially on weekends. Because they do not brew on site, Tractor can stay open until 2 a.m., unlike the breweries where they have to close at midnight. The staff at Tractor is among the friendliest and funniest in town. There is no food on site, but the restaurants around Tractor are no dummies; many will deliver your food straight to the tap room. And there is always at least one food truck outside. On the beer front, the regular menu includes the popular Almanac IPA, Farmer’s Tan Red Ale, and our favorite, the Double Plow Oatmeal Stout. You can also find Tractor’s IPA, Red, and Mustachio Milk Stout in six-packs at local liquor establishments all over town.

Kellys: One of the older and more popular establishments, Kellys features a full restaurant menu of favorite American and Mexican dishes. The insides features dozens of televisions showing sports from around the world, too, though most folks prefer the spacious patio to relax and unwind after a long day or week. The beers are decent, though not our personal favorites. The Red Ale, Scottish, and others are worth sampling. Kellys is best for the atmosphere and if you want to watch your favorite team in action on TV. For great beer, head elsewhere. Kellys is located on the south side of Central on Wellesley.

Bosque Public House: Located on Girard, just south of Central behind the Mannie’s Restaurant and next to a Walgreens, the Bosque taproom is a popular hangout for people of all ages, not just the college students from across the street at UNM. Take note that every Wednesday they try to have one of their beers on cask. The lineup is almost always the same as at the main brewery on San Mateo (see above).

B2B Bistronomy: Located on Central between Richmond and Bryn Mawr, this is a popular burger joint that brews their own beers, including a Coconut Porter. The burgers are not fast food, but gourmet, served in a laid-back atmosphere. They also have a sister location across the street from UNM near Yale and Central called Lobo Beast 101, though that location has far more guest taps than house beers, with a different food menu.

Nob Hill Bar & Grill: Not a brewery, but arguably the best beer bar in the city, with all sorts of awesome, rare beers on tap from around the country. How good is NHBG? When San Diego’s Ballast Point first came to New Mexico, this was the location of their first tap takeover event. When Michigan’s Founders Brewing debuts this coming Wednesday, it will be at NHBG, with nine (!) of their best beers on tap. Oh, and there is food, too, but we imagine your attention is focused almost solely on the beer.

Breweries around downtown

ABQ’s downtown underwent a major cleanup/renovation over a decade ago. There are lot of restaurants and more traditional bars worth checking out. Plus there are some good establishments for live, local music, such as Launchpad, Burt’s Tiki Lounge, and the Sunshine Theater. The best beer bar downtown is Sister, located on Central near 4th Street. It features a wide array of out-of-town (and out-of-country) beers on tap. For local beers, there are five options.

Marble: Located on Marble Street just north of Lomas Blvd. along 1st Ave., Marble is the largest local brewery. You can find Marble beers on tap at numerous other bars around town, plus you can buy six-packs and bombers of Marble beers all over the place as well. The downtown pub is attached to the brewery. It features a comfy patio out front with a music stage, and a recently renovated interior. There is a limited in-house menu of food, including chips & salsa, but there is almost always a food truck out front. On the beer front, the IPA, Red Ale, Wildflower Wheat, Double White, and Oatmeal Stout are among the most popular regular beers. For seasonals, make sure to try the Imperial Red, which just won a bronze medal at GABF. Marble also does a special cask beer every Friday.

Back Alley Draft House: Located on Central in the back of J.C.’s New York Pizza Dept., BADH is a small establishment that brews some of its own beers and also offers beers from other local breweries. You can order some pizza from NYPD and they will bring it back to you while you enjoy some solid local offerings as well as some unique out-of-state/country beers on tap. The current BADH lineup includes Hefen or Hell, Kentucky Common, and Berliner Weisse.

Chama River Microbar: In addition to its main location off I-25, Chama has a small tap room located next to the Sunshine Theater on 2nd Ave. just south of Central. Space is very limited, and there is only beer here. Check in via Chama’s main site to see what’s on tap. They usually have four to five regular beers and two seasonals on tap.

Tractor Wells Park: Tractor moved its brewing operation to this huge space at 1800 4th Ave. from Los Lunas, a town south of Albuquerque. While the brewing is humming in the back, the taproom has become a popular place with an external patio as well. Tractor hosts live music and other special events pretty frequently. The beer list here is extensive, with traditional favorites like those listed above with Nob Hill are always on tap. You can also find multiple seasonals, including Traktoberfest, Jack the Sipper, and Cowboy Blend Coffee Pale Stout.

The Draft Station: Located on Central just west of downtown before you get to Old Town is this taproom owned by the same folks as Chama River and Santa Fe’s Blue Corn Brewery. There is a rotating selection of local brews on tap.

Ponderosa: Another more recent addition to the local scene, Ponderosa is owned by the same folks behind Portland’s PINTS Brewery. It opened recently on Bellamah near the Natural History Museum and Explora. The easiest way to get there is to take I-40 to Rio Grande. Head south on Rio Grande and as you approach Hotel Albuquerque on the left, you’ll see the light for Bellamah. Turn left (east) and head to where the road curves south. Before the curve, turn into the parking lot for the brightly colored apartment building/retail complex. Ponderosa is on the first floor. They serve a full menu of food and a wide selection of beers, including Jubilee, their recent smoked amber brewed for their first anniversary.

Boese Brothers: One of two breweries to just open, Boese is located on the northwest corner of Gold and 6th Street in the heart of downtown. They have a mid-sized taproom and a small patio. The good folks up the street at Gold Street Caffe will deliver food you order from the comfort of your booth or bar stool at Boese. The beer lineup is a little different, with Dr. Strangehop XPA, Patriot Porter (on nitro), and La Onza White Ale. They may run out of their Oktoberfest by the time you read this. It was that popular.

Rio Bravo: The other newcomer to the area, Rio Bravo is north of downtown on 2nd Street just south of I-40. It is a huge place, with plenty of parking outside. They also rely on food trucks instead of making any of their own. Snakebite IPA, Black Angus Stout, Rio Bravo Amber, and Karl’s Hefeweizen are among some of the top sellers early on for Rio Bravo. They are hosting a four-day Oktoberfest celebration that started this Thursday and running through Sunday.

Breweries in Santa Fe and further north

If you are taking the time to head north to our state’s capital, don’t fret, there are plenty of beer options. Santa Fe Brewing, the oldest and biggest brewery in the state, is located south of the city along I-25 (there is also a second location in town). The tap room is small and cozy and features many of the brewery’s finest beers. You can also find SFBC beers almost everywhere in the state on bar taps or in bottle form at liquor stores. The most popular are the Happy Camper IPA, Nut Brown, and Java Stout. The current seasonal is Oktoberfest.

Within the city limits are two breweries that give you two locations apiece to visit. Blue Corn combines a restaurant and brewery that has recently been racking up the accolades. Blue Corn became the first non-ABQ brewery to win the annual IPA Challenge in 2013. Among its current beers on tap are Gold Medal Oatmeal Stout, End of the Trail Brown Ale, and Good Guys IPA, a triple IPA hop monster.

Second Street is a favorite of the Crew and has two locations, one on Second Street and one at the Railyard. While their IPAs are solid, our favorites at Second Street include their Kolsch, Cream Stout, and whatever variety of English bitter that brewer Rod Tweet has come up with. Second Street has a full food menu at both locations.

Duel Brewing is the most unique Santa Fe brewery. Brewing Belgian-style beers, Duel features some (very) high ABV beers, so be careful when you visit. There is a food menu to help you out. We recommend the Dark Ryder, Titian, and Grunewald Imperial Porter.

Another city up north visiting is Los Alamos, home to the famous National Labs, and now home to their first brewery, Bathtub Row. Tucked away near the center of town, they have unleashed a tremendous initial lineup, including Black Point Stout and Hoppenheimer IPA.

If you feel like heading up to Taos, make sure to stop along the way in Rinconada to visit Blue Heron. A small establishment located along the main road on the left/west side, Blue Heron has a small interior and cozy patio in the back. They also sell their beer in bottle form if you don’t have time to enjoy a pint. We highly recommend the La Llorona Scottish Ale, though at present it’s only available in bottles. Make sure to try the Aurora IPA and Penasco Porter if you have time for a pint. There is also a second Blue Heron location that opened in the nearby town of Espanola.

In Taos itself, stop by the Taos Ale House near the north end of town. The beers change fairly frequently, but if they’re available snag a pint of the Porter or Brown Ale. You can also visit Taos Mesa west of town. It’s a popular music venue, so watch out for expensive cover charges, but the beer is solid, particularly their Stout and Kolsch.

It’s that time of year again, when lots of folks from outside Albuquerque and New Mexico descend upon the Duke City for the Balloon Fiesta. While a lot of us locals grumble about the increase in traffic, even we’re big softies for the Fiesta (assuming we wake up in time). Well, we are, our dogs are not. They’re huddling in the corner thinking the end times are upon us.

Anyway, with all these newcomers visiting ABQ, and balloons not flying 24-7, they will all need something to do. So for our regular readers, there won’t be much here that you don’t already know. But if you have people in from out of town asking you, “What else is there to do here?” well now you have this post to show them that there is more to this town than balloons, green chile, and “Breaking Bad.”

We’ve updated this for 2014, since we’ve added just a few new breweries. If you’re just interested in the current slate of seasonal beers, as always, check out The Week Ahead in Beer. That feature runs every Wednesday.

Breweries near the Fiesta

Bosque Brewing: Located at 8900 San Mateo, Bosque is by far the closest to all the balloon action. Heck, you can walk there if you want to. The easiest way to get to Bosque is to take I-25 and get off at Alameda and go west, just like you would go to Balloon Fiesta Park. San Mateo is the first red light you’ll encounter and if you take a right and go north, Bosque will be ahead on your right. Bosque is not a huge place, so don’t be surprised if it gets crowded around happy hour. They have a menu of sandwiches and other items to munch on to keep your belly full. On the beer side, Bosque is more malt-forward than hop-forward. That does not mean Bosque beers lack flavor (their slogan is “Flavor is Boss”). We would recommend trying the Cumulus Wheat IPA, Scotia Scotch Ale, and our favorite, the Driftwood Oatmeal Stout. The current seasonals are topped by the Olde Bosky Porter, formerly a regular, and Rebel Brit (Brown Ale).

Kaktus Brewing: Just to the north of Albuquerque is the small town of Bernalillo, which finally got a brewery of its own when Kaktus opened last month. Located at 471 South Hill Road, you can access it easily from the Highway 550 exit off I-25. Head west on 550 and then take a left and go south at Hill, which is the first red light you will encounter. Kaktus will be down the road on your right. A quaint, unique setting, Kaktus has rotating lineup of quality beers and a small food menu. We recommend the Oyster Stout, Honk Ale, and the Helles Lager, which is one of the better lighter (in color, not flavor) beers around.

Sandia Chile Grill: Located near the intersection of San Antonio and Wyoming, SCG is a restaurant with a small but good selection of beers. If you get off I-25 at San Antonio and head east, there is a shopping center on the northeast corner of SA and Wyoming just a mile-plus up the road. SCG is located near a Subway and the Sports and Wellness, behind the McDonald’s and Walgreens. We endorse the Rio Negro Stout, Red Ranger Irish Red, and Barb’s Barrel Hefeweizen, though the lineup tends to change a lot.

Breweries in the far Northeast Heights

Lizard Tail: If you feel like getting away from the more crowded areas, head east on Montgomery until you reach the intersection with Eubank. Located in a shopping center on the southeast corner with a Pelican’s and the Dirty Bourbon Dance Hall (for country music lovers only), Lizard Tail is a new neighborhood pub. They have a little food, but it’s mostly about the beer, which is more malt-forward than hoppy. The Belgian Abbey and Rye Stout are worth trying. If you do need some hops, go for the IPA or India Black Ale.

Breweries along the I-25 corridor

Most of these breweries can be accessed off the freeway between the Jefferson, Montgomery/Montano, and Comanche/Candelaria exits. Two are visible from the freeway, the others are tucked away but are very much worth making an effort to find.

Chama River: Right next to the Century Rio 24 movie theater is one of ABQ’s oldest and most respected breweries. You can access it via the Jefferson exit and the southbound frontage road. Chama is a restaurant with a full menu featuring a wide array of food. If you’re on a budget, it’s a good place to splurge. Personally, I think they might have the best BBQ ribs in town. On the beer side of things, Chama’s selection is plentiful but not overly heavy. The Sleeping Dog Stout is a personal favorite. The Jackalope IPA, Rio Lodo Brown Ale, and Rio Chama Amber Ale are also popular. The current seasonal lineup includes the tasty Wee Bit Loco Scottish ale and the Hardscrabble ESB.

Nexus Brewery: Located on the east side of the freeway, you can access Nexus via the northbound frontage road just north of the Montgomery/Montano exit. Also a restaurant, Nexus is unique in New Mexico for its soul food-style menu. The chicken and waffles is among the most popular dishes you will find in town. The food alone is well worth a visit, but make sure to try the beer while you’re there. The Scotch Ale, Cream Ale, Chocolate Porter, and IPA are all popular with customers. Nexus tends to be a more malt-forward brewery.

Canteen Brewhouse: One of two breweries tucked away in an industrial area located between Candelaria to the south and Comanche to the north (now officially known as “The Brewery District”), you can find the Canteen Brewhouse (formerly Il Vicino Brewery Canteen) on Aztec Road. If you take the frontage road northbound, Aztec will be on your right as you go from Candelaria to Comanche. Head east a few blocks and the Canteen will be on your left. The Canteen usually has a huge selection of seasonals. There is a small menu of sandwiches (try the Piggly Wiggly, a pulled pork monstrosity) and other snack items. For beer, you can go with the popular Wet Mountain IPA, Slowdown Brown, and Dark & Lusty Stout. The current seasonal lineup includes the popular Irish Red, as well as the Pumpkin Porter and Pumpkin Saison, giving you some options for your fall palate.

La Cumbre: Just around the corner from Il Vicino is La Cumbre, one of the fastest-growing and most highly regarded breweries in the state. If you love hops, this is your place to visit. The easiest way to find La Cumbre is to take Candelaria east from I-25 and then take a left (north) on Girard, which is the last street before you reach an overpass to cross a diversion channel. La Cumbre will be just north of Candelaria on the left side. Parking is mostly restricted around La Cumbre by the other businesses, so be careful not to park anywhere you might get towed. There is usually a food truck parked out front, but for the most part La Cumbre is a place to enjoy a pint or buy a growler or some bombers or four-packs of cans. The award-winning Elevated IPA tops the list of regular beers on tap, though I would also recommend the burly Malpais Stout. The current seasonal list includes the awesome Witch’s Tit, a spiced pumpkin beer, as well as the ultra-hoppy Project Dank IPA. If you’ve never had an imperial pilsner, La Cumbre has one for you in the form of Levitated.

Red Door: One of the newest breweries in Albuquerque, Red Door just opened. It’s on Candelaria just west of I-25 on the north side of the street. There is usually a food truck parked out back for your culinary needs. Inside the spacious taproom, Red Door has its initial lineup of beers and sometimes guest beers from other local breweries. The Red Door staff has discovered keeping up with thirsty Burquenos is no easy task. The Roamer Red, Threshold IPA, and Paint it Black Milk Stout (served on nitro) have all been hugely popular. Red Door also has one of the more potent ciders you can find in the Unhinged Cider (7.9% ABV).

Breweries on the West Side

If you are staying west of the Rio Grande, the beer options are only getting better.

Broken Bottle: Located in a small shopping center just north of the intersection of Coors Blvd. and Irving Blvd., Broken Bottle has a unique take on beers. The official address is 9421 Coors Blvd. NW. There is some food available, plus there’s a Subway and a sushi place located in the same shopping center so you can keep your belly full. On the beer front, I definitely recommend The Incident Black IPA, which should satisfy both dark beer lovers and hopheads. The David Hasselhefe (wheat beer) and AFD Red are also popular. The current seasonal lineup includes Oktoberfest and Cactus Juice, which is made with prickly pear cactus.

Pi Brewing: This new brewery is operational, but all beers are served next door at Nicky V’s Neighborhood Pizzeria (same owners). They have a small but solid lineup, including the Unchallenged IPA, West Coast Red, and Robust Porter. Of course, you can also chow down on lots of tasty Italian dishes at Nicky V’s. As for how to get there, Nicky V’s is located on Coors Blvd. just north of Paseo del Norte. The address is 9780 Coors on the east side of the road.

Boxing Bear: The newest joint on the west side is Boxing Bear, which took over the old Elliott’s Bar space in the shopping center on the northeast corner of the intersection of Alameda and Coors/Corrales Road. There is a small menu of sandwiches and snacks. Brewer Justin Hamilton has made an immediate impact with some big, bold beers. The Uppercut IPA packs a punch, while the Glassjaw Double IPA is just what hopheads want. The Standing 8 Stout and Hairy Mit Hefe are there if you don’t want to pummel your palate with too many hops.

The Stumbling Steer: If you need a gourmet meal with your craft beer, it’s hard to go wrong at the Steer. (Pardon the rhyming pun.) The menu is extensive, and boy oh boy do we love the Pork Bites (aka BAG OF MEAT) for an appetizer. The Steer is still assembling the in-house brewery; for now they are brewing out at Sierra Blanca/Rio Grande in Moriarty east of Albuquerque. Still, those are brewer Kirk Roberts’ recipes, and they are quite tasty. The brown ale and imperial stout are tremendous. A recent black IPA specialty beer was excellent as well. The Steer is located on Ellison on the southeast corner of the intersection with Alameda.

Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill: Located on Sara Road just east of Rio Rancho Blvd./Highway 528, this Rio Rancho-based brewery is a full-on restaurant that also brews its own beer. The beer lineup changes from time to time, but at present we know the Chupacabra IPA, Panama Red Ale, Robusto Porter, and our favorite, the Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale, are all on tap.

Turtle Mountain: One of the oldest and most respected breweries around, TMBC is located on Southern Blvd. just west of Highway 528 in Rio Rancho. Offering a full menu of awesome pizzas, calzones, sandwiches, and more, TMBC has plenty of culinary delights to go along with a strong lineup of beer created by new brewer Tim Woodward. Regular favorites include the Heidelberg Helles, Piedra Lisa Porter, Parasol White IPA, and McDay’s Cream Ale. The Monochrome Milk Stout and Oktoberfest top the current seasonal list.

Breweries in Uptown

The area around Coronado Mall and the Uptown Shopping Center, located between I-40 to the south and Menaul to the north along Louisiana Blvd., this is a popular destination for shoppers. There are not a lot of options here for beer, unfortunately.

ABQ Brew Pub: Featuring beers from Moriarty’s Rio Grande/Sierra Blanca Brewing (for those not in the know, Moriarty is a small town east of the Sandia Mountains along I-40), the Brew Pub has a solid food menu and more. Located on Uptown Blvd. just west of Louisiana, it shares a building with Uptown Sports Bar. Regular beers on tap include Rio Grande Outlaw Lager, Roswell Alien Amber, and the Pancho Verde Chile Cerveza. The Sierra Blanca Bonechiller Brown won a silver medal at last year’s GABF, so make sure to check it out, too.

B.J.’s: It’s the big chain brewery/restaurant. It’s not local, so you can do better. Support local while you visit ABQ.

Breweries in Nob Hill

This is a very popular area located along Central between Girard on the west and Washington to the east. There are lots of shops and restaurants to visit.

Tractor: While the brewery is located near downtown (see below), the tap room has quickly become one of the most popular destinations in Nob Hill. Located at 118 Tulane SE, you can find Tractor fairly easily if you’re on Central. Just look for the Arby’s and/or Starbucks on the south side of Central. Tractor is located just behind Starbucks. The joint is jumping during happy hour and almost every night after 10 p.m., especially on weekends. Because they do not brew on site, Tractor can stay open until 2 a.m., unlike the breweries where they have to close at midnight. The staff at Tractor is among the friendliest and funniest in town. There is no food on site, but the restaurants around Tractor are no dummies; many will deliver your food straight to the tap room. And there is always at least one food truck outside. On the beer front, the regular menu includes the popular Almanac IPA, Farmer’s Tan Red Ale, and our favorite, the Double Plow Oatmeal Stout. You can also find Tractor’s IPA, Red, and Mustachio Milk Stout in six-packs at local liquor establishments all over town.

Kellys: One of the older and more popular establishments, Kellys features a full restaurant menu of favorite American and Mexican dishes. The insides features dozens of televisions showing sports from around the world, too, though most folks prefer the spacious patio to relax and unwind after a long day or week. The beers are decent, though not our personal favorites. The Red Ale, Scottish, and others are worth sampling. Kellys is best for the atmosphere and if you want to watch your favorite team in action on TV. For great beer, head elsewhere. Kellys is located on the south side of Central on Wellesley.

Breweries around downtown

ABQ’s downtown underwent a major cleanup/renovation over a decade ago. There are lot of restaurants and more traditional bars worth checking out. Plus there are some good establishments for live, local music, such as Launchpad, Burt’s Tiki Lounge, and the Sunshine Theater. The best beer bar downtown is Sister, located on Central near 4th Street. It features a wide array of out-of-town (and out-of-country) beers on tap. For local beers, there are five options.

Marble: Located on Marble Street just north of Lomas Blvd. along 1st Ave., Marble is the largest local brewery. You can find Marble beers on tap at numerous other bars around town, plus you can buy six-packs and bombers of Marble beers all over the place as well. The downtown pub is attached to the brewery. It features a comfy patio out front with a music stage, and a small interior. There is a limited in-house menu of food, including chips & salsa, but there is almost always a food truck out front. On the beer front, the IPA, Red Ale, Wildflower Wheat, Double White, and Oatmeal Stout are among the most popular regular beers. For seasonals, make sure to try the Rescue Craft Draft, an English-style pale ale. Marble also does a special cask beer every Friday.

Back Alley Draft House: Located on Central in the back of J.C.’s New York Pizza Dept., BADH is a small establishment that brews some of its own beers and also offers beers from other local breweries. You can order some pizza from NYPD and they will bring it back to you while you enjoy some solid local offerings as well as some unique out-of-state/country beers on tap. The current BADH lineup includes Soroche IPA, Red Ale, Berliner Weisse, and Octoberfest.

Chama River Microbar: In addition to its main location off I-25, Chama has a small tap room located next to the Sunshine Theater on 2nd Ave. just south of Central. Space is very limited, and there is only beer here. Check in via Chama’s main site to see what’s on tap. They usually have four to five regular beers and two seasonals on tap.

Tractor Wells Park: Tractor moved its brewing operation to this huge space at 1800 4th Ave. from Los Lunas, a town south of Albuquerque. While the brewing is humming in the back, the taproom has become a popular place with an external patio as well. Tractor hosts live music and other special events pretty frequently. The beer list here is extensive, with traditional favorites like those listed above with Nob Hill are always on tap. You can also find multiple seasonals, including Tractoberfest, Tupac Cali Red, and La Llorona Dry Hop Amber.

The Draft Station: Located on Central just west of downtown before you get to Old Town is this taproom owned by the same folks as Chama River and Santa Fe’s Blue Corn Brewery. There is a rotating selection of local brews on tap. It’s a fairly new place.

Ponderosa: Another new place (which I forgot when I first typed this up, sorry), Ponderosa is owned by the same folks behind Portland’s PINTS Brewery. It opened recently on Bellamah near the Natural History Museum and Explora. The easiest way to get there is to take I-40 to Rio Grande. Head south on Rio Grande and as you approach Hotel Albuquerque on the left, you’ll see the light for Bellamah. Turn left (east) and head to where the road curves south. Before the curve, turn into the parking lot for the brightly colored apartment building/retail complex. Ponderosa is on the first floor. They serve a full menu of food and a wide selection of beers, including a seasonal Oktoberfest and a Chocolate Pumpkin Porter.

Breweries in Santa Fe and further north

If you are taking the time to head north to our state’s capital, don’t fret, there are plenty of beer options. Santa Fe Brewing, the oldest and biggest brewery in the state, is located south of the city along I-25 (there is also a second location in town). The tap room is small and cozy and features many of the brewery’s finest beers. You can also find SFBC beers almost everywhere in the state on bar taps or in bottle form at liquor stores. The most popular are the Happy Camper IPA, Nut Brown, and Java Stout. The current seasonal is Oktoberfest.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with the second half of the now-divided Week Ahead in Beer. This edition covers all the breweries outside of Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties. From Taos to Santa Fe to Farmington to Las Vegas in the north, to Portales, Artesia, Silver City, and Las Cruces in the south, this edition will keep you up to date every week with as many breweries as we can reach.

This is the last time we will run a State Edition for the foreseeable future. As I explained last week, we simply haven’t gotten enough responses from breweries outside the four in Santa Fe. Those four breweries will be folded into what has been the Metro Edition, which will continue to run every Wednesday as a single edition. If the breweries outside this portion of the I-25 corridor start contacting us, or we somehow establish more reliable communication, we can always restart the State Edition at a later time. What we don’t want is to be running outdated or incorrect information for all of you. These weekly features were designed to make life easier for beer drinkers, by giving them all the information they need in one place, and for the breweries, who could focus on beer and not worry about updating their own websites or Facebook pages. When I emailed the breweries below about this being the final edition without their protest/help, none of them responded, so that tells you pretty much everything you need to know.

The four Santa Fe breweries gave us updates for this week. For the other breweries, we are giving them one last listing, noting whether the information taken from their websites or our most recent visits are old or at least somewhat up to date. High Desert and Three Rivers tend to be the best at updating their own websites. For the rest, if you need the info, we’ll always have links to their official sites on the NMDSBC front page. If you’re passing through and have a desire to know what’s on tap, call them to find out. (And if you want, subtly remind them that you used to get all your info from us until they stopped providing it.)

To further help people organize any brewing adventures, rather than list the breweries alphabetically here as we do in the Metro Edition, they’re grouped by geographic region: Northwest (Farmington), Santa Fe area, Taos area, Northeast (Las Vegas), East (Portales), Southeast (Artesia), Southwest (Las Cruces, Silver City).

Santa Fe breweries

Blue Corn Brewery — (505) 438-1800

(Daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Berliner Weiss, Funkadelic Dunkel, Night Train (Schwarzbier), Scorched (smoked olde ale). The most recent German-style beer addition is the Night Train (5% ABV, 32 IBU), a darker lager made with two types of German malts and noble hops. The Funkadelic (5.8% ABV, 30 IBU) is a Bavarian-style brown ale, with Crystal hops added to balance the big malt bill. Scorched debuted last week. I got the chance to try both Funkadelic, which is exceptionally smooth, and Scorched, which is exactly the big old smoky blast you would expect.

News: In the works is an imperial red wet hop beer using 50 pounds (!) of Chinook hops from Colorado. An Oktoberfest and a pumpkin ale are in the works, while further down the line we are really looking forward to an imperial stout and a barley wine.

Beers: Study Series: Brown (Belgian-style Sour Brown Ale), Bad Amber, Fiction (IPA), Synne (Pale Ale), Fantin (Double Pale Ale), Marcel (Witbier), Whistler (Blonde), Manikin Small Scottish-style Dark Ale, Oaked Grunewald (Barrel Aged Imperial Porter). Duel brewer Todd Yocham described the latest Study Series entry (5% ABV) like this, “A very malt forward light bodied brown ale, soured with Lactobacillus and accentuated by the fruity esters from our Trappist yeast.” The Fantin (7.5% ABV), which I tried and liked at Pajarito Summerfest, gets this summary, “Aromas of strawberry and pineapple accentuated by our Trappist yeast will keep you wanting more.” Todd also said his supply of the Oaked Grunewald is very limited, so hurry over before it runs out.

Events: The life drawing session is $25 and is held each Sunday morning from 11-1 (although they are not open to the drinking public till 1 p.m. on Sun). You get the beverage of your choice, a Brussels-style waffle made with their own yeast and beer and then served with a Grunewald Syrup. Everyone then draws from a nude model. People can sign up through the website or call the brewery to reserve a spot.

Santa Fe Brewing Company — (505) 424-3333

Beers: Oktoberfest, Carne’s Peachy Camper. The Peachy Camper is this week’s entry for Small Batch Saturday, where peaches were added to some Happy Camper IPA, as the name might imply. Kriek, SFBC’s popular sour, is not on tap, but it is available in bombers around the state. The first beer in the new Ever Changing Series will be a Double White IPA, which potentially will debut late next week.

Events: $1 Off Growler Refills in the Tasting Room on Mondays. $2 Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 Pint Special in the SFBC Tasting Room, and the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers’ Meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Tasting Room as well on the third Wednesday of every month. On Thursday, there will be $1 Off Growler Refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

There will be two major homebrewing events at SFBC this weekend. Luke, our Santa Fe-based Bullpen member, has all of that covered.

News: SFBC will be providing beer at the Telluride Bands and Brews festival all weekend. SFBC will also be at the Los Alamos Science, Beer, and Bands event from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday. And, as they have been the last two weeks, SFBC will be at the Santa Fe Ski Basin Fall Gold sale, which will be held this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Beers: Kolsch, Cream Stout, Rod’s Best Bitter, Citra Weizen, Scotch Ale, Pajarito Pale Ale, Boneshaker Bitter, IPA, Steam Bitter. The ESB, Railrunner Pale Ale, and Railyard Red have run out, but Citra Weizen and Scotch Ale are back. This year’s Scotch Ale is a cherry wood smoked aged beer, which gives it a smoky yet sweet flavor profile, without being too much of either. It’s a big, thick, tough beer that’s not for the faint of heart.

Events: SSB Thursday’s Patio series features Bill Hearne. Catahoula Curse is playing Friday. Saturday will be Rescuefest, benefiting the Atalaya Search and Rescue. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with multiple bands playing. It will also mark the seasonal debut of Atalaya Altbier, brewed in honor of the group.

Shows at the Railyard include Hot Club on Friday and Crazy 88’s on Saturday.

The Farmer’s Market Pavillion will be hosting the Green Chile Smackdown on Saturday. SSB’s Alien Burger will be among the competitors and SSB will host a beer garden for the event.

SSB will also have a beer garden for Sunday’s AHA Rally at the Railyard.

Every Wednesday night, both SSB locations host Game Night. SSB has game boards and dominoes or bring your own … oh yeah, they also have discounted pitchers!

Taos-area breweries

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with the second half of the now-divided Week Ahead in Beer. This edition covers all the breweries outside of Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties. From Taos to Santa Fe to Farmington to Las Vegas in the north, to Portales, Artesia, Silver City, and Las Cruces in the south, this edition will keep you up to date every week with as many breweries as we can reach. I’ll be handling both editions for now.

Is this the end of the road for the State Edition?

This may be the last appearance of the State Edition. Since I took over from E-Rock and split The Week Ahead in Beer into two parts, this edition has been far more difficult to update. I send thanks to the Santa Fe breweries, from Blue Corn to Duel to SFBC to Second Street, as they have consistently responded to our weekly email and kept everyone up to date. So worry not, Santa Fe breweries, you will just be folded into the Metro Edition (which would thus just go back to being a single TWAIB). Since calling is expensive and time-consuming, I’ve been using email just as E-Rock did. We only have emails for 11 of the breweries listed here, though a few of those who do not have email tend to update their beer lists semi-regularly on their websites (notably High Desert and Three Rivers). Places like The Wellhead and Roosevelt have never given us means to contact them. And since I created the State Edition I’ve heard back maybe twice from Taos Ale House, once each from Comanche Creek and Taos Mesa, and never from Blue Heron, Eske’s, Little Toad Creek, and NM Craft Brewing. It’s just gotten to the point of where I ask, what is the point?

In the end, though, this is not about me or the Crew, it’s about you, our readers. If you want to see us continue two editions of TWAIB, sound off. If you live or routinely visit some of these other towns in New Mexico outside of ABQ and Santa Fe, please help us out by encouraging your local breweries to make contact with us. We compile these lists to help craft beer lovers across the state have one easy place to go to learn all they need to about what’s on tap. It’s basically a free service that we’re providing to help the breweries.

We did not receive news of any new beers on tap this week anywhere in the state, save for Santa Fe Brewing’s Small Batch Saturday beer is Carne’s Rugby Red.

To further help people organize any brewing adventures, rather than list the breweries alphabetically here as we do in the Metro Edition, they’re grouped by geographic region: Northwest (Farmington), Santa Fe area, Taos area, Northeast (Las Vegas), East (Portales), Southeast (Artesia), Southwest (Las Cruces, Silver City).

Santa Fe breweries

Beers: Berliner Weiss, Funkadelic Dunkel, Night Train (Schwarzbier), Scorched (smoked olde ale). The most recent German-style beer addition is the Night Train (5% ABV, 32 IBU), a darker lager made with two types of German malts and noble hops. The Funkadelic (5.8% ABV, 30 IBU) is a Bavarian-style brown ale, with Crystal hops added to balance the big malt bill. Scorched debuted last week.

News: In the works is an imperial red wet hop beer using 50 pounds (!) of Chinook hops from Colorado.

Duel Brewing Company — (505) 474-5301

Events: SSB Thursday’s Patio series will feature Paw Cole and the Clinkers all month long. Lil Tones is playing Friday, followed by Pollo Frito on Saturday. There is never a cover. Shows at the Railyard include Mushi Trio on Friday and Acadian Drifters on Saturday, and Hot Honey with Sunday brunch all month long.

The Ladybug and Embudo were the most recent additions to the lineup when we visited Blue Heron recently. The Ladybug offers up a unique mix of varied hops that produce a beer that tends to be sweeter and mellower than what we normally think of with IPAs. Blue Heron also has many of its beers for sale in bombers, including longtime Crew favorite La Llorona Scottish Ale.

News: Blue Heron’s new taproom in Espanola is now open for business. Stop by on your next time up north and check out all they have to offer.

Comanche Creek Brewing Company — (575) 377-2337

Beers: Scully Mountain IPA, Deadman Pale Ale, Homestead Amber Ale, Iron Mountain Porter, Belgian Blond. Homestead Amber Ale was on hand when E-Rock and I visited Comanche Creek in 2012. The Homestead is often bottled and served at establishments in the Eagle Nest/Angel Fire area. We also had the Iron Man back then. It’s a burly beer worthy of Tony Stark.

News: Comanche Creek is expanding their brewing operations to the benefit of all.

Thanks to reader 8BitHitman, we have an updated beer list for Eske’s at last. After initially going “huh?” on a few of these beers, 8BitHitman wrote us back to fill us in. The Chemist is Eske’s popular gluten-free beer. The Artist Ale is an English bitter and was his choice as the best of the bunch. The Naked Ape is a fruit beer, with peach/apricot characteristics.

News: Taos Ale House recently partnered with The Burger Stand out of Lawrence and Topeka, Kan., to bring you the best burgers and fries you’ll ever eat. The Burger Stand is now open and is already booming with business.

Beers: Amarillo Rojo, Great Scot Scottish, Fall Down Brown, Superstitious Stout, Kolsch 45, 3 Peaks IPA. We were big fans of the Kolsch 45, and the Superstitious Stout was pretty good as well, even for the hot summer. There are also multiple guest taps, including one rotating tap called the “NM Brewers Guild” tap, featuring random beers from all over the state.

News: There’s “a high gravity surprise” coming for us all in late October/early November.

Northeast breweries

Beers: Oatmeal Stout, Kolsch, Dry-hopped Pale Ale, Cider, Red. Business has been nuts over at NMCBC, so beers are changing out rapidly on tap. This is the most recent listing for the Old Town Draft House via their Facebook page.

News: NMCBC’s new pub, The Old Town Draft House in Las Vegas, is open for business. They have 10 NMCBC taps and some cider. At least for a while, their hours are high noon until close, seven days a week.

Northwest breweries

Three Rivers Brewery — (505) 325-6605

Beers: India Pale Ale, Sandstone Wheat, SHIPA – Citra, Papa Bear’s Golden Honey Ale, Red Mountain Wheat, Red Apple Flyer Cider, Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat, King Colona, Longshot Light, 3 Rivers Scottish Ale, Arroyo Amber Ale, Thode’s Fat Dog Stuck in the Door Stout. The lineup at Three Rivers has two recent additions in the SHIPA – Citra (6.5% ABV) and the Sandstone Wheat (4.7% ABV), a Bavarian-style hefeweizen that’s back after only a brief absence. The SHIPA is a Single-Hop IPA made with, you guessed it, Citra. The Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat (4.5% ABV) is made with fresh raspberries. The King Colona (9.5%) is the imperial version of the NM Colona. The rather awesomely named Thode’s Fat Dog Stuck in the Door Stout (5.4% ABV) is the darkest beer on tap. It was named in honor of Jim Thode, a friend of the brewery who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. The Arroyo Amber Ale (5.0% ABV) is the local favorite. It is copper-red in color, medium bodied, and is brewed with caramel malt with a nice hop balance.

Eastern breweries

Roosevelt Brewing — (575) 226-2739

Southeast breweries

Beers: George Lite, Hard Cider, Porter, Pilsner. Desert Water, located at 1 E. Cottonwood Road in Artesia, brews in small batches, so the lineup is constantly changing. They sell the beer in 4-ounce samples ($1, $2 for cider) or 12-ounce glasses ($3.50 beer, $5 cider). You can also purchase the beer in growlers.

News: The Pilsner should be on tap this weekend. The Pale Ale is still fermenting.

The Wellhead — (575) 746-0640

Beers: Cisco Canyon Blonde, Indian Basin Wheat, Wellhead Pale Ale, Crude Oil Stout, Roughneck Red, Wildcat IPA. Brew Crew Bullpen member Amy O visited The Wellhead recently and snapped a photo of their beer board. Her review of Artesia’s original brewery just ran on our site. The Wildcat IPA (7% ABV) is the biggest beer in the lineup, though personally I’d love to try the Crude Oil Stout (4.7% ABV) one of these days.

Southwest breweries

He went with the Barley Wine, while since I had to drive on to ABQ that day, I went with the Pilsner. We enjoyed both of these beers from opposite ends of the ABV spectrum. High Desert Brewing Company is located at 1201 W. Hadley Ave. in Las Cruces.

Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery — (575) 956-6144

Beers: Helles Lager, IPA, Amber Ale, Robust Porter, Oatmeal Stout. These are all beers in the regular rotation. I will add seasonal brews as I learn about them. I got to try the Amber and Porter at SummerFest. Both hit all the right notes for their respective styles. LTC’s beers are getting better and better.

It’s Labor Day weekend, so make sure to hug a brewer (with his/her consent) and thank ’em for all the hard labor that went into producing the beers you’re drinking. Well, on a more serious note the holiday weekend figures to be a busy one around the state. And since it’s a holiday weekend and this is New Mexico, please remember to drink responsibly and be careful out there on the roads. There are a few events going on around the state. Santa Fe Brewing will be serving beers at the Angel Fire Gravity Games and Brewfest on Saturday. If you would rather hang around in Santa Fe, there will be live music this weekend at Duel and Second Street. If you’re further north, Taos Mesa will be hosting plenty of live music as well.

There are a few new beers on tap across the state. Blue Corn is introducing Scorched, an smoked olde ale. Desert Water has George Lite on tap and the Pilsner will be ready this weekend. High Desert has fresh batches of Hefeweizen, Black IPA, Amber, and Stout. New Mexico Craft Brewing has a whole new lineup at the Old Town Drafthouse, including their popular Cider. Santa Fe’s Small Batch Saturday will feature a Wee Heavy. Second Street has a fresh batch of the GABF medal-winning Steam Bitter.

To further help people organize any brewing adventures, rather than list the breweries alphabetically here as we do in the Metro Edition, they’re grouped by geographic region: Northwest (Farmington), Santa Fe area, Taos area, Northeast (Las Vegas), East (Portales), Southeast (Artesia), Southwest (Las Cruces, Silver City).

Santa Fe breweries

Blue Corn Brewery — (505) 438-1800

(Daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: HALT!-bier, Berliner Weiss, Funkadelic Dunkel, Night Train (Schwarzbier), Scorched (smoked olde ale). It’s getting awful German over at Blue Corn. The most recent German addition is the Night Train (5% ABV, 32 IBU), a darker lager made with two types of German malts and noble hops. The Funkadelic (5.8% ABV, 30 IBU) is a Bavarian-style brown ale, with Crystal hops added to balance the big malt bill. HALT!-bier (6% ABV, 40 IBU) is an Altbier made with two types of German color malts and a mix of Warrior and Crystal hops that give it a crisp, dry finish. Scorched will debut at the Thursday Beer Garden tonight, while a flamenco group will provide entertainment from 6 to 9 p.m.

News: In the works is an imperial red wet hop beer using 50 pounds (!) of Chinook hops from Colorado.

Duel Brewing Company — (505) 474-5301

Beers: Study Series: Brown (Belgian-style Sour Brown Ale), Bad Amber, Fiction (IPA), Synne (Pale Ale), Fantin (Double Pale Ale), Grunewald (Imperial Porter), Marcel (Witbier), Whistler (Blonde). Duel brewer Todd Yocham described the latest Study Series entry (5% ABV) like this, “A very malt forward light bodied brown ale, soured with Lactobacillus and accentuated by the fruity esters from our Trappist yeast.” The Fantin (7.5% ABV), which I tried and liked at Pajarito Summerfest, gets this summary, “Aromas of strawberry and pineapple accentuated by our Trappist yeast will keep you wanting more.”

Events: The life drawing session is $25 and is held each Sunday morning from 11-1 (although they are not open to the drinking public till 1 p.m. on Sun). You get the beverage of your choice, a Brussels-style waffle made with their own yeast and beer and then served with a Grunewald Syrup. Everyone then draws from a nude model. People can sign up through the website or call the brewery to reserve a spot.

Santa Fe Brewing Company — (505) 424-3333

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., closed on Sunday)

Beers: Oktoberfest, Wee Heavy. The Wee Heavy is this week’s entry for Small Batch Saturday. Production of Freestyle Pilsner has ended for the year, so go grab a sixer while they are still available. Kriek, SFBC’s popular sour, is not on tap, but it is available in bombers around the state.

Events: $1 Off Growler Refills in the Tasting Room on Mondays. $2 Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 Pint Special in the SFBC Tasting Room, and the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers’ Meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Tasting Room as well on the third Wednesday of every month. On Thursday, there will be $1 Off Growler Refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

News: SFBC will be providing beer at the Angel Fire Gravity Games and Brewfest on Saturday. They will also be at the Fall Gold Sale at Ski Santa Fe on Sunday.

Beers: Kolsch, IPA, ESB, Boneshaker Bitter, Cream Stout, Railrunner Pale Ale, Railyard Red, Rod’s Best Bitter, Pajarito Pale Ale, Steam Bitter. The German Pilsner and Triskelion Amber have run out, so a trio of old favorites are back in the Rod’s Best Bitter, Pajarito Pale Ale, and Steam Bitter, which won a gold medal at GABF last year.

Events: SSB Thursday’s Patio series will feature Paw Cole and the Clinkers all month long. Lil Tones is playing Friday, followed by Pollo Frito on Saturday. There is never a cover. Shows at the Railyard include Mushi Trio on Friday and Acadian Drifters on Saturday, and Hot Honey with Sunday brunch all month long.

Every Wednesday night, both SSB locations host Game Night. SSB has game boards and dominoes or bring your own … oh yeah, they also have discounted pitchers!

Taos-area breweries

Beers: Embudo Gold Golden Ale, Lava Rock Pale Ale, Tarantula Trek Red Ale, Ladybug IPA, Prieta Real Imperial Stout. The Ladybug and Embudo were the most recent additions to the lineup when we visited Blue Heron recently. The Ladybug offers up a unique mix of varied hops that produce a beer that tends to be sweeter and mellower than what we normally think of with IPAs. Blue Heron also has many of its beers for sale in bombers, including longtime Crew favorite La Llorona Scottish Ale.

News: Blue Heron’s new taproom in Espanola is now open for business. Stop by on your next time up north and check out all they have to offer.

Comanche Creek Brewing Company — (575) 377-2337

Beers: Scully Mountain IPA, Deadman Pale Ale, Homestead Amber Ale, Iron Mountain Porter, Belgian Blond. Homestead Amber Ale was on hand when E-Rock and I visited Comanche Creek in 2012. The Homestead is often bottled and served at establishments in the Eagle Nest/Angel Fire area. We also had the Iron Man back then. It’s a burly beer worthy of Tony Stark.

News: Comanche Creek is expanding their brewing operations to the benefit of all.

Eske’s Brew Pub — (575) 758-1517

(Mon–Thurs 4 p.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Taos Green Chile Beer, The Chemist (Gluten-free), Blonde Betty, Artist Ale (English bitter), Millennium IPA, Red-Handed Ale, Naked Ape (Fruit beer). Thanks to reader 8BitHitman, we have an updated beer list for Eske’s at last. After initially going “huh?” on a few of these beers, 8BitHitman wrote us back to fill us in. The Chemist is Eske’s popular gluten-free beer. The Artist Ale is an English bitter and was his choice as the best of the bunch. The Naked Ape is a fruit beer, with peach/apricot characteristics.

Beers: Mosaic Lollipop Pale Ale, Mogul Imperial IPA, Simple Porter. We haven’t gotten an update from TAH in a while, so we don’t know if these are still the beers on tap or if something else has joined or replaced them. If anyone is in Taos over the Labor Day weekend, stop in and let us know what they’ve got. Also, grab a burger and a pint, it’s worth it. TAH also has a few guest beers on tap as well.

News: Taos Ale House recently partnered with The Burger Stand out of Lawrence and Topeka, Kan., to bring you the best burgers and fries you’ll ever eat. The Burger Stand is now open and is already booming with business.

Beers: Amarillo Rojo, Great Scot Scottish, Fall Down Brown, Superstitious Stout, Kolsch 45, 3 Peaks IPA. We were big fans of the Kolsch 45, and the Superstitious Stout was pretty good as well, even for the hot summer. There are also multiple guest taps, including one rotating tap called the “NM Brewers Guild” tap, featuring random beers from all over the state.

News: There’s “a high gravity surprise” coming for us all in late October/early November.

Northeast breweries

New Mexico Craft Brewing Co. — (505) 426-6079 (brewery), (203) 521-7908 (pub)

Beers: Oatmeal Stout, Kolsch, Dry-hopped Pale Ale, Cider, Red. Business has been nuts over at NMCBC, so beers are changing out rapidly on tap. This is the most recent listing for the Old Town Draft House via their Facebook page.

News: NMCBC’s new pub, The Old Town Draft House in Las Vegas, is open for business. They have 10 NMCBC taps and some cider. At least for a while, their hours are high noon until close, seven days a week.

Northwest breweries

Three Rivers Brewery — (505) 325-6605

Beers: India Pale Ale, Sandstone Wheat, SHIPA – Citra, Papa Bear’s Golden Honey Ale, Red Mountain Wheat, Red Apple Flyer Cider, Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat, King Colona, Longshot Light, 3 Rivers Scottish Ale, Arroyo Amber Ale, Thode’s Fat Dog Stuck in the Door Stout. The lineup at Three Rivers has two recent additions in the SHIPA – Citra (6.5% ABV) and the Sandstone Wheat (4.7% ABV), a Bavarian-style hefeweizen that’s back after only a brief absence. The SHIPA is a Single-Hop IPA made with, you guessed it, Citra. The Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat (4.5% ABV) is made with fresh raspberries. The King Colona (9.5%) is the imperial version of the NM Colona. The rather awesomely named Thode’s Fat Dog Stuck in the Door Stout (5.4% ABV) is the darkest beer on tap. It was named in honor of Jim Thode, a friend of the brewery who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. The Arroyo Amber Ale (5.0% ABV) is the local favorite. It is copper-red in color, medium bodied, and is brewed with caramel malt with a nice hop balance.

Eastern breweries

Roosevelt Brewing — (575) 226-2739

Beers: Eleanor’s Blonde Ale (5.5% ABV, 21 IBU), Portales Pale Ale (5.5% ABV, 45 IBU), Clovis Point IPA (6.1% ABV, 69 IBU), Dirt Town Brown Ale (4.0% ABV, 23 IBU), Happy Heifer Hefeweizen (4.9% ABV, 17 IBU), Big Stick Stout (10% ABV, 75 IBU), Black Water Draught Porter (8.5% ABV, 30 IBU), Green Chile Lager (5% ABV, 18 IBU), Wild Cherry Stout (4% ABV, 15 IBU), Roosevelt Golden Lager (4.8% ABV, 21 IBU), Wagon Wheel Wheat (4% ABV, 15 IBU). Roosevelt Brewing is located at 201 S. Main Street in Portales. Our own Porter Pounder stopped by while working on a film crew that was shooting in Portales and reviewed several of Roosevelt’s beers.

Events: Wednesday night is Open Mic Night at Roosevelt Brewing.

Southeast breweries

Desert Water Brewing — (888) 959-9342

(Tues-Sat noon-9 p.m.)

Beers: George Lite, Hard Cider, Porter, Pilsner. Desert Water, located at 1 E. Cottonwood Road in Artesia, brews in small batches, so the lineup is constantly changing. They sell the beer in 4-ounce samples ($1, $2 for cider) or 12-ounce glasses ($3.50 beer, $5 cider). You can also purchase the beer in growlers.

News: The Pilsner should be on tap this weekend. The Pale Ale is still fermenting.

The Wellhead — (575) 746-0640

Beers: Cisco Canyon Blonde, Indian Basin Wheat, Wellhead Pale Ale, Crude Oil Stout, Roughneck Red, Wildcat IPA. Brew Crew Bullpen member Amy O visited The Wellhead recently and snapped a photo of their beer board. Her review of Artesia’s original brewery just ran on our site. The Wildcat IPA (7% ABV) is the biggest beer in the lineup, though personally I’d love to try the Crude Oil Stout (4.7% ABV) one of these days.

Southwest breweries

High Desert Brewing Company — (575) 525-6752

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight, Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Wheat Ale, Peach Wheat, Hefeweizen, Bohemian Pilsner, Octoberfest, IPA, Black IPA, Amber Ale, Steam Beer, Stout, Barley Wine. The lineup has cycled in four new beers, with the Hefeweizen, Black IPA, Amber, and Stout replacing the Kolsch, ESB, Anniversary IPA, and Brown. Porter Pounder and I recently had a chance to visit HDBC. He went with the Barley Wine, while since I had to drive on to ABQ that day, I went with the Pilsner. We enjoyed both of these beers from opposite ends of the ABV spectrum. High Desert Brewing Company is located at 1201 W. Hadley Ave. in Las Cruces.

Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery — (575) 956-6144

(Open Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday) from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., staying open late on Friday/Saturday.)

Beers: Helles Lager, IPA, Amber Ale, Robust Porter, Oatmeal Stout. These are all beers in the regular rotation. I will add seasonal brews as I learn about them. I got to try the Amber and Porter at SummerFest. Both hit all the right notes for their respective styles. LTC’s beers are getting better and better.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with the second half of the now-divided Week Ahead in Beer. This edition covers all the breweries outside of Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties. From Taos to Santa Fe to Farmington to Las Vegas in the north, to Portales, Artesia, Silver City, and Las Cruces in the south, this edition will keep you up to date every week with as many breweries as we can reach. It’s a pretty darned quiet week around the state. There really aren’t any major brewing events or even special beer release parties. A total of six New Mexico breweries will cross state lines and participate in Saturday’s San Juan Brewfest in Durango. Eske’s, Santa Fe, Taos Mesa, and Three Rivers will be present, along with ABQ metro breweries Marble and Turtle Mountain. Luke from the Brew Crew Bullpen was planning on attending, so we’ll look forward to his report next week. Other than that, man, it’s quiet. Too quiet.

Beers: Imperial Stout, RyePA, IPA, X Hop Pale, Brown. I am told that the Imperial Stout is well worth the trip to Las Vegas. Business has been nuts over at NMCBC, so beers are changing out rapidly on tap.

News: NMCBC’s new pub, The Old Town Draft House in Las Vegas, is open for business. They have 10 NMCBC taps and some cider. At least for a while, their hours are high noon until close, seven days a week.

Northwest breweries

Three Rivers Brewery — (505) 325-6605

Beers: India Pale Ale, Sandstone Wheat, SHIPA – Citra, Papa Bear’s Golden Honey Ale, Red Mountain Wheat, Red Apple Flyer Cider, Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat, Sandstone Wheat, King Colona, Longshot Light, 3 Rivers Scottish Ale, Arroyo Amber Ale, Thode’s Fat Dog Stuck in the Door Stout. The lineup at Three Rivers has two new beers in the SHIPA – Citra (6.5% ABV) and the Sandstone Wheat (4.7% ABV), a Bavarian-style hefeweizen that’s back after only a brief absence. The SHIPA is a Single-Hop IPA made with, you guessed it, Citra. The Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat (4.5% ABV) is made with fresh raspberries. The King Colona (9.5%) is the imperial version of the NM Colona. The rather awesomely named Thode’s Fat Dog Stuck in the Door Stout (5.4% ABV) is the darkest beer on tap. It was named in honor of Jim Thode, a friend of the brewery who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. Some of the more interesting older beers on tap include the Afternoon D’light IPL (5.0% ABV), an India pale lager made with just Pilsner malt and Citra hops. The Arroyo Amber Ale (5.0% ABV) is the local favorite. It is copper-red in color, medium bodied, and is brewed with caramel malt with a nice hop balance.

Eastern breweries

Beers: Eleanor’s Blonde Ale (5.5% ABV, 21 IBU), Portales Pale Ale (5.5% ABV, 45 IBU), Clovis Point IPA (6.1% ABV, 69 IBU), Dirt Town Brown Ale (4.0% ABV, 23 IBU), Happy Heifer Hefeweizen (4.9% ABV, 17 IBU), Big Stick Stout (10% ABV, 75 IBU), Black Water Draught Porter (8.5% ABV, 30 IBU), Green Chile Lager (5% ABV, 18 IBU), Wild Cherry Stout (4% ABV, 15 IBU), Roosevelt Golden Lager (4.8% ABV, 21 IBU), Wagon Wheel Wheat (4% ABV, 15 IBU). Roosevelt Brewing is located at 201 S. Main Street in Portales. Our own Porter Pounder stopped by while working on a film crew that was shooting in Portales and reviewed several of Roosevelt’s beers.

Southeast breweries

Desert Water Brewing — (888) 959-9342

Beers: Rice Beer, Hard Cider, Porter. Desert Water, located at 1 E. Cottonwood Road in Artesia, brews in small batches, so the lineup is constantly changing. They sell the beer in 4-ounce samples ($1, $2 for cider) or 12-ounce glasses ($3.50 beer, $5 cider). You can also purchase the beer in growlers.

News: George Lite should be on tap this weekend. The Pilsner is still fermenting.

The Wellhead — (575) 746-0640

Beers: Cisco Canyon Blonde, Indian Basin Wheat, Wellhead Pale Ale, Crude Oil Stout, Roughneck Red, Wildcat IPA. Brew Crew Bullpen member Amy O visited The Wellhead recently and snapped a photo of their beer board. Her review of Artesia’s original brewery just ran on our site. The Wildcat IPA (7% ABV) is the biggest beer in the lineup, though personally I’d love to try the Crude Oil Stout (4.7% ABV) one of these days.

Southwest breweries

High Desert Brewing Company — (575) 525-6752

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight, Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Wheat Ale, Peach Wheat, Kolsch, Bohemian Pilsner, Octoberfest, Extra Special Bitter, IPA, Anniversary IPA, Brown Ale, Steam Beer, Barley Wine. The lineup is still the same as a week ago. The Kolsch and Pilsner rejoined the lineup recently, replacing the Irish Red and Black IPA. High Desert Brewing Company is located at 1201 W. Hadley Ave. in Las Cruces.

Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery — (575) 956-6144

(Open Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday) from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., staying open late on Friday/Saturday.)

Beers: Helles Lager, IPA, Amber Ale, Robust Porter, Oatmeal Stout. These are all beers in the regular rotation. I will add seasonal brews as I learn about them. I got to try the Amber and Porter at SummerFest. Both hit all the right notes for their respective styles. LTC’s beers are getting better and better.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with the second half of the now-divided Week Ahead in Beer. This edition covers all the breweries outside of Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties. From Taos to Santa Fe to Farmington to Las Vegas in the north, to Portales, Artesia, Silver City, and Las Cruces in the south, this edition will keep you up to date every week with as many breweries as we can reach. I’ll be handling both editions for now.

A friend online said recently that if New Mexico breweries really want to put our brewing scene on the map nationally, more of them must start bottling or canning their beers. Outside of the ABQ metro area, where La Cumbre, Marble, Rio Grande/Sierra Blanca, and Tractor all distribute, the only distribution brewery to date has been Santa Fe Brewing. Well, two other breweries in the City Different are now heading down that path as well. Duel Brewing had a special tasting of their seven (!) bottled beers at Jubilation in Albuquerque last weekend. For now, Duel will only be selling their bombers at Jubilation and out of the brewery. Still, it’s a good start to what they eventually hope will be a greater distribution of their Belgian-style wares. Today (Thursday) will mark the debut of Second Street’s Pivotal IPA in cans. Working with Mother Road Mobile Canning, Second Street will be distributing their beer for the first time. You can stop by today from 2 to 6 p.m. to watch the process and buy a four-pack. For now, the four-packs of Pivotal will be sold only out of the two Second Street locations, but the hope is that in the future they will be selling out of stores in the area. These are just the first steps for the two breweries in terms of distribution, but it is a good sign that more places are looking to can and bottle. It also saves us Burquenos space in our cars’ trunks where we had to pack in all those growlers for our Santa Fe trips.

On the new brewery front, it looks like two places will be opening soon. Twisted Chile Brewing is open for food sales in Socorro right now and has other New Mexico beers on tap. They are getting ready to crank things up soon and will begin serving their own beers. Further to the south, Spotted Dog Brewery is making progress toward opening in Mesilla. Porter Pounder will be down there on a film set and will try to stop by Spotted Dog to check out their progress. The Las Cruces area has been overdue for another brewery.

There are a few new beers on tap across the state. Blue Corn has Funkadelic Dunkel on tap. Duel has Whistler and Marcel (Witbier) on tap. Second Street has brought back Boneshaker Bitter, Cream Stout, Railrunner Ale, and Railyard Red. Up in Farmington, Three Rivers has tapped Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat, King Colona, and Thode’s Fat Dog Stuck in the Door Stout.

To further help people organize any brewing adventures, rather than list the breweries alphabetically here as we do in the Metro Edition, they’re grouped by geographic region: Northwest (Farmington), Santa Fe area, Taos area, Northeast (Las Vegas), East (Portales), Southeast (Artesia), Southwest (Las Cruces, Silver City).

Santa Fe breweries

Blue Corn Brewery — (505) 438-1800

(Daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Training Wheels Light Lager, HALT!-bier, Berliner Weiss, Funkadelic Dunkel. The Funkadelic (5.8% ABV, 30 IBU) is a Bavarian-style brown ale, with Crystal hops added to balance the big malt bill. For craft beer beginners, Blue Corn has an American light lager called Training Wheels (4.5% ABV, 15 IBU). It’s made with flaked maize, rice, and pilsner malt. HALT!-bier (6% ABV, 40 IBU) is an Altbier made with two types of German color malts and a mix of Warrior and Crystal hops that give it a crisp, dry finish.

News: A Schwarzbier and a Smoked Olde Ale are the next beers on deck. A special version of the Olde Ale aged on Scotch-soaked oak chips will be available at the Draft Station in Santa Fe on Friday at 4 p.m.

Duel Brewing Company — (505) 474-5301

(Sun 11 a.m.–8 p.m., Mon–Tues 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Wed–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Study Series: Brown (Belgian-style Sour Brown Ale), Bad Amber, Fiction (IPA), Synne (Pale Ale), Fantin (Double Pale Ale), Grunewald (Imperial Porter), Marcel (Witbier), Whistler (Blonde). Duel brewer Todd Yocham described the latest Study Series entry (5% ABV) like this, “A very malt forward light bodied brown ale, soured with Lactobacillus and accentuated by the fruity esters from our Trappist yeast.” The Fantin (7.5% ABV), which I tried and liked at Pajarito Summerfest, gets this summary, “Aromas of strawberry and pineapple accentuated by our Trappist yeast will keep you wanting more.”

Events: The life drawing session is $25 and is held each Sunday morning from 11-1 (although they are not open to the drinking public till 1 p.m. on Sun). You get the beverage of your choice, a Brussels-style waffle made with their own yeast and beer and then served with a Grunewald Syrup. Everyone then draws from a nude model. People can sign up through the website or call the brewery to reserve a spot.

Santa Fe Brewing Company — (505) 424-3333

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., closed on Sunday)

Beers: Freestyle Pilsner, Oktoberfest, Kriek. The Kriek is a sour ale with cherries added and then aged in oak barrels. It’s not your average sour, and like almost all SFBC beers, you can find it for sale at fine liquor establishments throughout the state.

News: SFBC will be selling a small number of special bottles this week. They have 28 total bottles of Oud Bruin and Single Barrel, plus six bottles of Sour Tripel from the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers Club.

Events: $1 Off Growler Refills in the Tasting Room on Mondays. $2 Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 Pint Special in the SFBC Tasting Room, and the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers’ Meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Tasting Room as well on the third Wednesday of every month. On Thursday, there will be $1 Off Growler Refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

Second Street Brewery — (505) 989-3278 (Railyard), (505) 982-3030 (original location)

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Sunday noon-9 p.m.)

Beers: Kolsch, IPA, ESB, Triskelion Amber, German Pilsner, Boneshaker Bitter, Cream Stout, Railrunner Ale, Railyard Red. August is German Beer Month at Second Street, so the Pilsner and the Amber are the first two of the German-style brews coming to tap. The Boneshaker, Stout, Railrunner, and Red are all back on tap after a short absence.

Events: SSB Thursday’s Patio series will feature Paw Cole and the Clinkers all month long. Christina Herr is playing Friday, followed by Hot Club of Santa Fe on Saturday. There is never a cover. Shows at the Railyard include Step in Blues on Friday, Pete Stein on Saturday, and Hot Honey with Sunday brunch all month long.

Today (Thursday) is the next Cask & Curry Night at the original location. Railrunner Ale will be on cask.

Every Wednesday night, both SSB locations host Game Night. SSB has game boards and dominoes or bring your own … oh yeah, they also have discounted pitchers!

Taos-area breweries

Beers: Embudo Gold Golden Ale, Lava Rock Pale Ale, Tarantula Trek Red Ale, Ladybug IPA, Prieta Real Imperial Stout. The Ladybug and Embudo were the most recent additions to the lineup when we visited Blue Heron recently. The Ladybug offers up a unique mix of varied hops that produce a beer that tends to be sweeter and mellower than what we normally think of with IPAs. Blue Heron also has many of its beers for sale in bombers, including longtime Crew favorite La Llorona Scottish Ale.

News: Blue Heron’s new taproom in Espanola is now open for business. Stop by on your next time up north and check out all they have to offer.

Comanche Creek Brewing Company — (575) 377-2337

(Wed-Sat noon–6 p.m.)

Beers: Scully Mountain IPA, Deadman Pale Ale, Homestead Amber Ale, Iron Mountain Porter, Belgian Blond. Homestead Amber Ale was on hand when E-Rock and I visited Comanche Creek in 2012. The Homestead is often bottled and served at establishments in the Eagle Nest/Angel Fire area. We also had the Iron Man back then. It’s a burly beer worthy of Tony Stark.

News: Comanche Creek is expanding their brewing operations to the benefit of all.

Eske’s Brew Pub — (575) 758-1517

(Mon–Thurs 4 p.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sun noon-10 p.m.)

UPDATED >>> Beers: Taos Green Chile Beer, The Chemist (Gluten-free), Blonde Betty, Artist Ale (English bitter), Millennium IPA, Red-Handed Ale, Naked Ape (Fruit beer). Thanks to reader 8BitHitman, we have an updated beer list for Eske’s at last. After initially going “huh?” on a few of these beers, 8BitHitman wrote us back to fill us in. The Chemist is Eske’s popular gluten-free beer. The Artist Ale is an English bitter and was his choice as the best of the bunch. The Naked Ape is a fruit beer, with peach/apricot characteristics.

Beers: Mosaic Lollipop Pale Ale, Mogul Imperial IPA, Simple Porter. When we visited the Mosaic and the Porter were still listed on the menu, but both had run out. The Porter was back on tap as of Wednesday, or so the TAH Facebook page showed. We did try the Mogul, which is served in 10-ounce glasses only due to a high ABV (9.5%). It’s not a hop bomb, but instead has a lot of balance between the hops and the malty backbone. TAH also has a few guest beers on tap as well.

News: Taos Ale House recently partnered with The Burger Stand out of Lawrence and Topeka, Kan., to bring you the best burgers and fries you’ll ever eat. The Burger Stand is now open and is already booming with business.

Taos Mesa Brewing — (575) 758-1900

(Daily 11 a.m. – close)

Beers: Sessions 3 (IPA), Superstitious Stout, Kolsch 45, Hopper IPA, Hopricot. Sessions 3 is the third entry in their session IPA series. It’s a little lighter and mellower than its predecessors, maybe closer to a pale ale than a traditional IPA. We were big fans of the Kolsch 45 and the Superstitious Stout was pretty good as well, even for the hot summer. There are also multiple guest taps, including one rotating tap called the “NM Brewers Guild” tap, featuring random beers from all over the state.

Santa Fe Brewing kicked off a German trend last weekend with their Oktoberfest release party. Now it’s Second Street’s turn as August is German Beer Month. We don’t have all the details yet, but there is already a German Pilsner on tap and likely a few more German-style beers to come. We do adore this as fall is pretty much the Brew Crew’s favorite season. It sounds like a trip up to Santa Fe is in short order. Hopefully this time we can avoid any and all torrential downpours. Second Street’s patio is to be savored. If you’re down south, High Desert is also into the German theme, busting out their Kolsch, Bohemian Pilsner, and they still have their Octoberfest on tap.

We did not get many updates at all this week about new beers. It looks like a lot of breweries are slowing down production of new seasonals while trying to keep up with the demand for their more popular regular beers. We do know that High Desert has their Anniversary IPA back on tap. Santa Fe has a fresh batch of Kriek available at the taproom and they’re selling it in bombers around the state. Second Street also has Triskelion Amber. Wait, wasn’t the Triskelion the headquarters of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the last Captain America movie?

Beers: Lunch Meeting (Session IPA), Training Wheels Light Lager, Pound for Pound IPA, HALT!-bier, Berliner Weiss. The Pound for Pound IPA (7.5% ABV, 100+ IBU) was Blue Corn’s entry into the IPA Challenge. It boasts 7.5 pounds of hops per barrel, utilizing a mixture of Amarillo, Chinook, Eldorado, and Simcoe. The Lunch Meeting (4.7% ABV, 50 IBU) was made with Citra, Simcoe, and Amarillo hops. There is a lot of Vienna malt to balance out the hops. For craft beer beginners, Blue Corn has an American light lager called Training Wheels (4.5% ABV, 15 IBU). It’s made with flaked maize, rice, and pilsner malt. HALT!-bier (6% ABV, 40 IBU) is an Altbier made with two types of German color malts and a mix of Warrior and Crystal hops that give it a crisp, dry finish. It comes out today (Thursday) and will be paired with a special German-style dinner.

Beers: Study Series: Brown (Belgian-style Sour Brown Ale), Bad Amber, Fiction (IPA), Non-Fiction (Pale Ale), Fantin (Double Pale Ale), Oaked Grunewald (Imperial Porter), Dark Ryder (Strong Dark Ale). Duel brewer Todd Yocham described the latest Study Series entry (5% ABV) like this, “A very malt forward light bodied brown ale, soured with Lactobacillus and accentuated by the fruity esters from our Trappist yeast.” The Fantin (7.5% ABV), which I tried and liked at Pajarito Summerfest, gets this summary, “Aromas of strawberry and pineapple accentuated by our Trappist yeast will keep you wanting more.”

News: Duel Brewing has just started bottling Tableaux, Titian, and Fiction in 22-ounce bottles.

Coming soon are Whistler (Belgian Blonde) and Marcel (Belgian Witbier).

Events: The life drawing session is $25 and is held each Sunday morning from 11-1 (although they are not open to the drinking public till 1 p.m. on Sun). You get the beverage of your choice, a Brussels-style waffle made with their own yeast and beer and then served with a Grunewald Syrup. Everyone then draws from a nude model. People can sign up through the website or call the brewery to reserve a spot.

Beers: Freestyle Pilsner, Oktoberfest, Kriek. The Kriek is a sour ale with cherries added and then aged in oak barrels. It’s not your average sour, and like almost all SFBC beers, you can find it for sale at fine liquor establishments throughout the state.

Events: $1 Off Growler Refills in the Tasting Room on Mondays. $2 Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 Pint Special in the SFBC Tasting Room, and the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers’ Meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Tasting Room as well on the third Wednesday of every month. On Thursday, there will be $1 Off Growler Refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

Beers: Kolsch, IPA, ESB, St. George IPA, Pivotal IPA, Triskelion Amber, German Pilsner. As noted above, August is German Beer Month at Second Street, so the Pilsner is the first of many German-style debuts coming to tap. The Amber is also new. Gone (for now) are the Cream Stout, Rod’s Best Bitter, Boneshaker Bitter, and Railyard Red.

Events: SSB Thursday’s Patio series will feature Paw Cole and the Clinkers all month long. Tumbleweeds are playing Friday, followed by Barb Wire on Saturday. There is never a cover. Shows at the Railyard include Greg Daigle on Friday and Hot Honey with Sunday brunch all month long. Saturday will feature the Heath Concert Series at the Railyard with Janiva Magness from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Every Wednesday night, both SSB locations host Game Night. SSB has game boards and dominoes or bring your own … oh yeah, they also have discounted pitchers!

Taos-area breweries

The Ladybug and Embudo were the most recent additions to the lineup when we visited Blue Heron recently. The Ladybug offers up a unique mix of varied hops that produce a beer that tends to be sweeter and mellower than what we normally think of with IPAs. Blue Heron also has many of its beers for sale in bombers, including longtime Crew favorite La Llorona Scottish Ale.

Beers: Scully Mountain IPA, Deadman Pale Ale, Homestead Amber Ale, Iron Mountain Porter, Belgian Blond. Homestead Amber Ale was on hand when E-Rock and I visited Comanche Creek in 2012. The Homestead is often bottled and served at establishments in the Eagle Nest/Angel Fire area. We also had the Iron Man back then. It’s a burly beer worthy of Tony Stark.

News: Comanche Creek is expanding their brewing operations to the benefit of all.

Beers: Mosaic Lollipop Pale Ale, Mogul Imperial IPA, Simple Porter. When we visited the Mosaic and the Porter were still listed on the menu, but both had run out. There was no word when they’d be back. We did try the Mogul, which is served in 10-ounce glasses only due to a high ABV (9.5%). It’s not a hop bomb, but instead has a lot of balance between the hops and the malty backbone. TAH also has a few guest beers on tap as well.

News: Taos Ale House recently partnered with The Burger Stand out of Lawrence and Topeka, Kan., to bring you the best burgers and fries you’ll ever eat. The Burger Stand is now open and is already booming with business.

Beers: Sessions 3 (IPA), Superstitious Stout, Kolsch 45, Hopper IPA, Hopricot. Sessions 3 is the third entry in their session IPA series. It’s a little lighter and mellower than its predecessors, maybe closer to a pale ale than a traditional IPA. We were big fans of the Kolsch 45 and the Superstitious Stout was pretty good as well, even for the hot summer. There are also multiple guest taps, including one rotating tap called the “NM Brewers Guild” tap, featuring random beers from all over the state.

Northeast breweries

New Mexico Craft Brewing Co. — (505) 426-6079 (brewery), (203) 521-7908 (pub)

Beers: Imperial Stout, RyePA, IPA, X Hop Pale, Brown. I am told that the Imperial Stout is well worth the trip to Las Vegas. Business has been nuts over at NMCBC, so beers are changing out rapidly on tap.

News: NMCBC’s new pub, The Old Town Draft House in Las Vegas, is open for business. They have 10 NMCBC taps and some cider. At least for a while, their hours are high noon until close, seven days a week.

Northwest breweries

Three Rivers Brewery — (505) 325-6605

Beers: India Pale Ale, Sandstone Wheat, Afternoon D’light IPL, Papa Bear’s Golden Honey Ale, Red Mountain Wheat, Red Apple Flyer Cider, Peachy Keen Wheat, Chaco Nut Brown, Schnitzengiggle, Longshot Light, 3 Rivers Scottish Ale, Arroyo Amber Ale, Powerplant Porter. The lineup at Three Rivers has been static since mid-July. Red Mountain Wheat (4.5% ABV), Peachy Keen Wheat (4.9% ABV), Schnitzengiggle (7% ABV), and Longshot Light (3.5% ABV) are all somewhat new. The snicker-worthy name Schnitzengiggle (shout out to the movie “Beerfest”) is a German-style dunkelweizen. Some of the more interesting older beers on tap include the Afternoon D’light IPL (5.0% ABV), an India pale lager made with just Pilsner malt and Citra hops. The Sandstone (4.7% ABV) is a Bavarian-style hefeweizen. The Arroyo Amber Ale (5.0% ABV) is the local favorite. It is copper-red in color, medium bodied, and is brewed with caramel malt with a nice hop balance.

Eastern breweries

Roosevelt Brewing — (575) 226-2739

Beers: Eleanor’s Blonde Ale (5.5% ABV, 21 IBU), Portales Pale Ale (5.5% ABV, 45 IBU), Clovis Point IPA (6.1% ABV, 69 IBU), Dirt Town Brown Ale (4.0% ABV, 23 IBU), Happy Heifer Hefeweizen (4.9% ABV, 17 IBU), Big Stick Stout (10% ABV, 75 IBU), Black Water Draught Porter (8.5% ABV, 30 IBU), Green Chile Lager (5% ABV, 18 IBU), Wild Cherry Stout (4% ABV, 15 IBU), Roosevelt Golden Lager (4.8% ABV, 21 IBU), Wagon Wheel Wheat (4% ABV, 15 IBU). Roosevelt Brewing is located at 201 S. Main Street in Portales. Our own Porter Pounder stopped by while working on a film crew that was shooting in Portales and reviewed several of Roosevelt’s beers.

Southeast breweries

Desert Water Brewing — (888) 959-9342

Beers: Amber, Rice Beer, Hard Cider, Hoppy, Wheat, Porter. Desert Water, located at 1 E. Cottonwood Road in Artesia, brews in small batches, so the lineup is constantly changing. They sell the beer in 4-ounce samples ($1, $2 for cider) or 12-ounce glasses ($3.50 beer, $5 cider). You can also purchase the beer in growlers.

The Wellhead — (575) 746-0640

Beers: Cisco Canyon Blonde, Indian Basin Wheat, Wellhead Pale Ale, Crude Oil Stout, Roughneck Red, Wildcat IPA. Brew Crew Bullpen member Amy O visited The Wellhead recently and snapped a photo of their beer board. Her review of Artesia’s original brewery just ran on our site. The Wildcat IPA (7% ABV) is the biggest beer in the lineup, though personally I’d love to try the Crude Oil Stout (4.7% ABV) one of these days.

Southwest breweries

High Desert Brewing Company — (575) 525-6752

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight, Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Wheat Ale, Peach Wheat, Kolsch, Bohemian Pilsner, Octoberfest, Extra Special Bitter, IPA, Anniversary IPA, Brown Ale, Steam Beer, Barley Wine. The Kolsch and Pilsner rejoined the lineup this week, replacing the Irish Red and Black IPA. Lots of fresh beer is ready for you, Las Cruces! High Desert Brewing Company is located at 1201 W. Hadley Ave.

Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery — (575) 956-6144

(Open Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday) from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., staying open late on Friday/Saturday.)

Beers: Helles Lager, IPA, Amber Ale, Robust Porter, Oatmeal Stout. These are all beers in the regular rotation. I will add seasonal brews as I learn about them. I got to try the Amber and Porter at SummerFest. Both hit all the right notes for their respective styles. LTC’s beers are getting better and better.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with the second half of the now-divided Week Ahead in Beer. This edition covers all the breweries outside of Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties. From Taos to Santa Fe to Farmington to Las Vegas in the north, to Portales, Artesia, Silver City, and Las Cruces in the south, this edition will keep you up to date every week with as many breweries as we can reach. Nothing says August like Oktoberfest!

The long hot month of August is almost upon us. The good folks up at Santa Fe Brewing decided that August is a perfect time to release their … Oktoberfest?! Yup, the popular German Marzen-style beer is going on tap this Saturday with a special release party at the brewery from noon to 5 p.m. The first 100 people who show up will even get a free burrito from Tortilla Flats. There will be a live radio broadcast by KBAC as well. So trek on up I-25 or hop on the Railrunner to join the festivities.

And to keep up with the German theme, Blue Corn is releasing its Berliner Weiss with a special dinner Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the southside brewery. You can get this beer with raspberry, peach, or herbal syrup added, or just try it as is. There will be a menu of German-inspired dishes as well.

In the meantime, there are new beers around the state to try. Blue Heron’s unique Ladybug IPA is available. High Desert brings back its Octoberfest (sensing a theme here?) and Steam Beer. Second Street put their ESB, Pivotal IPA, and St. George IPA back into the lineup. Taos Mesa has brought Hopricot to tap.

The Pound for Pound IPA (7.5% ABV, 100+ IBU) was Blue Corn’s entry into the IPA Challenge. It boasts 7.5 pounds of hops per barrel, utilizing a mixture of Amarillo, Chinook, Eldorado, and Simcoe. The Lunch Meeting (4.7% ABV, 50 IBU) was made with Citra, Simcoe, and Amarillo hops. There is a lot of Vienna malt to balance out the hops. Beers: Amber, Rice Beer, Hard Cider, Hoppy, Wheat, Porter. Desert Water, located at 1 E. Cottonwood Road in Artesia, brews in small batches, so the lineup is constantly changing. They sell the beer in 4-ounce samples ($1, $2 for cider) or 12-ounce glasses ($3.50 beer, $5 cider). You can also purchase the beer in growlers.

The Wellhead — (575) 746-0640

Beers: Cisco Canyon Blonde, Indian Basin Wheat, Wellhead Pale Ale, Crude Oil Stout, Roughneck Red, Wildcat IPA. Brew Crew Bullpen member Amy O visited The Wellhead recently and snapped a photo of their beer board. Her review of Artesia’s original brewery just ran on our site. The Wildcat IPA (7% ABV) is the biggest beer in the lineup, though personally I’d love to try the Crude Oil Stout (4.7% ABV) one of these days.

Southwest breweries

High Desert Brewing Company — (575) 525-6752

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight, Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Wheat Ale, Peach Wheat, Octoberfest, Extra Special Bitter, IPA, Black IPA, Brown Ale, Steam Beer, Irish Red, Barley Wine. The Octoberfest and Steam Beer rejoined the lineup this week, replacing the American Pale Ale and Porter. Lots of fresh beer is ready for you, Las Cruces! High Desert Brewing Company is located at 1201 W. Hadley Ave.

Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery — (575) 956-6144

(Open Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday) from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., staying open late on Friday/Saturday.)

Beers: Helles Lager, IPA, Amber Ale, Robust Porter, Oatmeal Stout. These are all beers in the regular rotation. I will add seasonal brews as I learn about them. I got to try the Amber and Porter at SummerFest. Both hit all the right notes for their respective styles. LTC’s beers are getting better and better.
