Greetings New Mexico craft beer lovers, this is E-Rock back to bring you another Tuesday installment of The Week Ahead in Beer. This column is hand-crafted to keep you up to date on all of the seasonal beers, news, and events served up at breweries and tap rooms in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos.

I am almost done with training at my new part-time job, so I should have time to revamp this column in the near future. My goal is to cover all New Mexico breweries in the next few weeks and maybe have a new interactive events calendar in place as well. Thanks again to everyone in the craft brewing community who has responded to my e-mail requests and to Stoutmeister with helping me keep this column current.

There is no big brewing event or brewing trend happening in the Land of Enchantment this week, as far as I know. However, there are several breweries in Albuquerque and Taos that are releasing some intriguing new beers.

Right now in the Duke City, Back Alley Draft House has a new Imperial Stout on tap. Bosque is tapping a new Red Ale this week. La Cumbre is releasing Operation Drown Moses, which is their newest entry in their Project Dank series. Il Vicino is now serving their Saison as part of their ½ barrel series, and they will have their GABF Dry Stout on cask this Saturday. Nexus has a new batch of their Imperial Cream Ale on tap, for those of you who, like me, have begun showing signs of withdrawal. Sandia Chile Grill has their Rattlesnake IPA back on tap, now with even more bite. Tractor is unleashing the power of the hops this week with their new India Black Lager and Double IPA. They have a new Oak Cider on tap this week as well.

In the City Different, Santa Fe Brewery’s Small Batch Saturday offering this Saturday will be Phil’s Smoked Altbier.  This changes every Saturday according to which homebrew is ready to go on tap.

Up in the Taos area, Comanche Creek is now serving Creekside Blond and Farmhouse Wheat. Taos Mesa has several beers making there way to taps this week including Rainy Day IPA, Ramblin’ Red, Superstitious Stout, and Wheeler Peak Wheat.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week.

ABQ Brew Pub — (505) 884-1116

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–midnight, Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Pecan Beer. Several times a year ABP serves up the latest creation by local brewing hero and winner of the Samuel Adams Longshot competition, Ben Miller, or seasonal releases by Monks Brewing.

Back Alley Draft House — 766-6973 (NYPD)

(Hours 4 p.m.-11 p.m. daily)

Beers: Imperial Stout, White Ryeno (Imperial Rye Wit), Summer Ale, Belgian White. Addison, BADH’s brewer, had his Summer Ale and Belgian White in tow with the White Ryeno at the Beer Premier and now all are on tap at BADH. I had the White Ryeno a few weeks ago, and I thought it was a great tasting beer. In terms of non-New Mexico beers of note, BADH should have Stone’s Coconut IPA on tap this week, and they already have w00tstout, a 13-percent ABV beast on tap. Franz Solo and Stoutmeister both enjoyed a bomber of the w00tstout recently; they can only imagine how good it tastes on tap. This collaboration beer was made by Stone, the creator of Fark.com, and actor/sci-fi icon Wil Wheaton. Way to go, Mr. Crusher!

News: Celebrate Dollar off Tuesdays on your favorite beers. Industry people always get a dollar off; show your server certificate or some other proof that you work in the crazy restaurant/bar industry. (Kitchen peeps TOO!)

Blue Corn Brewery — (505) 438-1800

(Daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Resurgence IPA, Lakeside Summer Ale, Raspberry Wheat, Belgian Style IPA. Resurgence IPA was the winner of this year’s IPA Challenge, with more votes than second through fourth place combined. Blue Corn’s website had this to say about the Lakeside Summer Ale: “Back by popular demand! A refreshing English style summer ale brewed in an American fashion with Centennial hops. Light notes of toast mingle with hints of citrus and pine while a subtle maltiness holds it all together. A great beer for this hot New Mexico weather. Brewed with Crisp pale malt, Vienna malt, honey malt and torrified wheat. Fermented with American Ale yeast 1056.” (5.4% ABV, 20 IBU, Original Gravity 1.051).

News: There are three new beers in the pipeline including the Cerveza Obrera (Classic American Pilsner), the Paonia Wet which is an IPA made with wet Cascade and Chinook hops from a small hop farm in Paonia, Colo., and a Scottish Export.

Blue Heron Brewery — (505) 579-9188

(Sun-Tues noon–6 p.m., Wed-Sat 10 a.m.–8 p.m.)

Beers: Amber’s Folly Amber, Tarantula Trek Red Ale, Aurora IPA, Lava Rock Pale Ale, La Llorona Scottish Ale. Shilling and Stoutmeister consider the La Llorona Scottish Ale to be one of the best beers brewed anywhere on Planet Earth. Yup, the whole darned planet.

Bosque Brewing Company — (505) 750-7596

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Sun noon-8 p.m.)

Beers: Red Ale, Doppelbier (8.4% ABV), Saison Rouge (Dark Saison), Pale Ryder (Pale Ale), Engaano Hefeweizen. Stoutmeister stopped by Bosque recently and had a pint of the Doppelbier. Here’s his take: “This thing is a beast in terms of ABV, but you don’t taste an overwhelming amount of alcohol. Instead you just get a good German-style beer with a smooth finish, minimal hops, and a little more body from beers of a lighter color. Just be careful with this one. It will sneak up on you even after just one pint.” There likely will not be too many new seasonals for a while at least until any of the current batches run out as Bosque is at production capacity (see below for some good news on how that will be alleviated).

News: Bosque has a new happy hour running from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and all day on Sunday. Look for a revamped menu and get $1 off your favorite pints.

Also in the near future Bosque will be expanding as the Subway next door moves out. Bosque will take over the space and begin the process of installing a new 10-barrel system, which will replace the current 3.5-barrel setup. Bosque has now begun distributing its beer to other establishments as well, with Scotia Scotch Ale now on tap at Two Fools in Nob Hill.

Broken Bottle Brewery — (505) 890-8777

(Mon–Fri 4 p.m.–midnight, Sat noon–midnight, Sun noon–10 p.m.)

Beers: Knight Rider Wheat (Black Hefeweizen), Black Star Stout, Wise Ass Watermelon Wheat, Tingley Peach. The Knight Rider Wheat was brewed with midnight wheat to give it an almost stout-like color but without the roasted flavor. It was B3’s offering at the Beer Premier.

News: Beginning early next week B3 will introduce two new seasonals, El Campeon (a light American ale) and Cactus Juice Ale (an American ale made with a whole lot of locally picked prickly pears).

Events: B3 has $3 beers every Tuesday from open to close. On Wednesday, B3 will be hosting their open mic from 8-10 p.m., with signups starting at 7:30 p.m. Check out B3’s new karaoke night every Thursday starting at 8 p.m. On Saturday starting at 2 p.m., B3 will host World Tavern Poker (it’s free to play and you can earn points, prizes, and a shot at the World Series of Poker).

Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill — (505) 994-9364

(Open daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m.)

Beers: Papa Cabra (Double IPA), Acapulco Red, Panama Red, Acapulco Gold (Mexican Lager) (5.2% ABV), Hefe Weizen (5.5% ABV), Robusto Porter (5.9% ABV), Inebriator (Doppel Bock) (8+% ABV), Chupacabra IPA (7.2% ABV), Pastizal Oatmeal Stout (5.5% ABV), Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale (5.0% ABV), ESB (5.2%). Stoutmeister and I had a chance to sample the Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale. According to Cazuela’s menu: “This cream ale uses red-hot stones to super caramelize the sugars, creating a nutty, toffee-like flavor.” Stoutmeister and I don’t always agree on beers, but we both found this light yet flavorful cream ale to be one of our favorites.

Cask: Cazuela’s tapped a special cask brew last Friday. It was a brew that made its way across the ocean to the Great British Beer Festival. Cazuela’s tapped it the same day as they tapped it over there.

Chama River Brewing Company — (505) 342-1800

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: American Session Ale, Copper John Pale Ale, Centennial Pale Ale, Sunset Red. Chama River’s website had this to say about Sunset Red: “A deliciously balanced American Red Ale with flavors and aromas of pine and citrus matched with a crisp hoppy bite to finish.” (9.3% ABV, 85 IBU) The American Session Ale debuted at The Beer Premier. Brandon had a review of that event including his thoughts on the ASA.

News: Mondays all summer, Chama is offering their Brew Club Members half off an entree when one entree of greater or equal value is purchased. They also offer half-priced bottles of wine from their glass list all day Monday.

Comanche Creek Brewing Company — (575) 377-2337

(Wed-Sat noon–6 p.m.)

Beers: Creekside Blond, Farmhouse Wheat, Deadman Pale Ale, Old Smokey Ale. According to CCBC’s website, Deadman Pale Ale “is a light bodied pale ale with fragrant hop character.” If you are in the Taos-Eagle Nest-Angel Fire area, make your way to Comanche Creek and let us know what you think of their current slate of beers.

Duel Brewing Company — (505) 474-5301

(Sun 11 a.m.–8 p.m., Mon–Tues 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Wed–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Grunewald (Imperial Porter), Dark Ryder (11% ABV), Titian (11% ABV), Fiction (6% ABV). Duel has ome keg of Grunewald (on tap now). A deep mysterious Belgian-style imperial porter with hints of chocolate, plum, and a little something else. At 12-percent ABV, embrace the dark side! According to Duel’s website, Titian is Duel’s “flagship golden ale: an age old classic … tempted by the colors of Gloria.” Stoutmeister had the Dark Ryder at Winter Brew back in January. He said it was absolutely lethal, but you’ll enjoy every second of your demise with this sweet, fiendish beer.

Eske’s Brew Pub — (575) 758-1517

(Mon–Thurs 4 p.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Red Ale, Apricot Ale, Scottish Ale (6% ABV), Mesa Pale Ale, Green Chile IPA, Artist Ale. The Artist Ale and Green Chile IPA are local favorites.

Il Vicino Brewing Canteen — (505) 881-2737

(Sun–Thurs noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–midnight)

Beers: Saison, Aztec Lager (Mexican Lager), Belgian Pale Ale, Galaxy IPA, Groping Gnome Belgian IPA, Barrel Rye PA, Cervesarita (28M American Wheat with margarita mix, served frozen or neat). The Saison is part of the Canteen’s 1/2 barrel series where they have saved one keg from past batches. There is only one keg, so it is very limited. Coming up in the 1/2 barrel series is the Roggenbock.

Cask: This Wednesday, the German Tettnang will be on cask for Hop Hullabaloo. On Saturday, the Canteen will have their GABF Pro-Am Dry Stout. For those who aren’t in the know, Hop Hullabaloo happens every Wednesday at the Canteen. Every Wednesday, brewers will start with a Wet Mountain IPA base and dry hop a single hop variety over that base. The idea is to give faithful Cask Wednesday patrons a unique view of how cask aging affects the flavor profile of different hops.

La Cumbre Brewing — (505) 872-0225

(Open every day at noon)

Beers: Project Dank: Operation Drown Moses, Old Hop New Hop, Who Gose There? (Leipziger-style Gose), Belgian Wit, Gracias por Fumar (Smoked Porter), Saison. According to La Cumbre’s website, Who Gose There? is “quite possibly the most obscure of all beer styles, Leipziger-style Gose is just starting to garner some attention. Very popular in Saxony during the 19th and early 20th century, this beer was actually packaged in a bottle with a long narrow neck that was bunged by the hardened yeast that collected in it. The beer style falls somewhere in between Berliner Weiss (another very rare style of beer) and a Belgain Witbier. Incredibly refreshing, low in alcohol, and rich in mouthfeel from the judicious use of malted wheat, this ale also contains corriander and an addition of…. salt? The finish is lightly tart and begs the drinker for one more sip.” (3.8% ABV, 16 IBU)

Cask: La Cumbre usually offers a couple beers on cask throughout fall and winter, but there is nothing on cask at this time.

Marble Brewery — (505) 243-2739

(Mon–Sat 1 p.m.–midnight, Sun 1 p.m.–10:30 p.m.)

Beers: Heisenberg’s Dark, Walt’s White Lie, Double White, Lambert’s Pale Ale. Heisenberg’s Dark and Walt’s White Lie were inspired by Breaking Bad. They were so well loved that they sold out quickly. Luckily, Marble has new batches of both beers in the works so they will both be back on tap this week. Marble’s website had this to say about Double White, “Our popular pale, hazy, Belgian-inspired wheat ale is brewed with coriander and orange peel. It is both refreshing and satisfying.” (7.0% ABV)

Cask: Check out Marble’s cask (a.k.a. “real” ale) selection on tap every Friday at the Downtown Pub.

Food: Thursday- Don Choche, Friday- Rustic and Don Choche, Saturday- Supper.

Nexus Brewery — (505) 242-4100

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Imperial Cream, Brown, Steam. Nexus’ English-style Brown made its first appearance at the Beer Premier, and now it is at the brewery patiently waiting for you to drink it. It’s a little more sweet than nutty on the brown ale spectrum. The new Steam from Nexus comes highly recommended by Franz Solo.

Cask: Nexus’ Scottish Ale should be on cask in a day or two.

Events: Nexus serves up Happy Hour All Day on Tuesday featuring $3 pints. Also on Tuesday, Nexus will be hosting their comedy open mic, Young Dumb and Full of Comedy, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room. They also have Ladies Night on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. featuring $3 pints for the ladies.

Sandia Chile Grill — (505) 798-1970

(Mon–Sat 8 a.m.–8 p.m., Sun 8 a.m.–6 p.m.)

Beers: Rattlesnake IPA, Rio Negro Sweet Milk Stout on Nitro, Son Ranger (Irish Red) 5%, Barb’s Barrel Hefeweisen, Smooth Move Amber. The Son Ranger Irish red is made with a new summertime recipe that is more suited for drinking during a long, hot day. Stoutmeister recommended this as a great summer beer. Rio Negro Sweet Milk Stout is one of Burque’s smoothest and tastiest offerings.

News: Sandia Chile Grill’s Rattlesnake IPA will be back on tap in a week, and a new batch of their award-winning New Mexico Gold Rush Pilsen will be back in a few weeks as well. There is a chance of a Double Pilsen this fall and the Red Ranger, a 7-percent version of the Son Ranger, will be on tap in October.

News: Sandia Chile Grill will be helping Cottonwood Winery and Brewery open their first brewery in Artesia. They will be open for business soon.

Santa Fe Brewing Company — (505) 424-3333

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., closed on Sunday)

Beers: Phil’s Smoked Altbier, Saison ’88, Oktoberfest. It may not feel much like fall but with the arrival of SFBC’s Oktoberfest it is not far off. Santa Fe Brewery’s Small Batch Saturday offering this Saturday will be Phil’s Smoked Altbier.  This changes every Saturday according to which homebrew is ready to go on tap. The Saison ’88 was brewed in honor of SFBC’s 25th anniversary. It is also available for sale in cans just about everywhere you can find SFBC products.

Events: $1 Off Growler Refills in the Tasting Room on Mondays. $2 Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 Pint Special in the SFBC Tasting Room, and the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers’ Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Tasting Room as well. On Thursday, there will be $1 Off Growler Refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

Second Street Brewery — (505) 989-3278 (Railyard), (505) 982-3030 (original location)

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Sunday noon-9 p.m.)

Beers: IPA 1000, Citra IPA, Brown Ale, Bohemian Pilsner, St. George IPA. Second Street is known for rolling out several versions of one style in a given month. For August it’s IPA Month, in honor of the IPA Challenge. The St. George IPA, IPA 1000, and Citra IPA are all on tap for your sampling pleasure.

Taos Ale House — (575) 758-5522

(Mon–Fri 4 p.m.-10 p.m., Sat noon-10 p.m., Sunday noon-8 p.m.)

Beers: Drunk Cyclist IPA, Dirty Brown, Mogul Imperial IPA, La Rubia. Mogul Imperial IPA is local favorite and still on tap. This IPA has a sweet piney flavor. Stoutmeister and Shilling loved the nutty flavor of the Dirty Brown when they tried it earlier this summer. Taos Ale House also carries multiple beers from other in-state breweries so there’s almost always something for everyone.

News: Taos Ale House now has a taco cart, Gringo Taco! It’s got a pretty fancy gourmet menu and has been really well received.

Taos Mesa Brewing — (575) 758-1900

(Daily 11 a.m. – close)

Beers: Old ’96 Sticke (Altbier), Cross-Eyed Rye, Lunch Pale Ale, Fall Down Brown, Kolsch 45, Hopper IPA, Great Scot Scottish, Notorious ESB, Ramblin’ Red, Superstitious Stout and Wheeler Peak Wheat. According to TMBC’s website, Hopper IPA is an “American style IPA (that) is bold all the way around. A strong nose of floral hops starts off the experience, followed by crisp floral bitter on the tongue, which is spread out by the uncompromisingly full body, and finishes up with a smooth citrus flavor.” (7.2% ABV, 75 IBUs) The Notorious ESB was the beer that debuted at The Beer Premier and Brandon loved every drop of it.

Tractor Brewing Company — (505) 433-5654 (Nob Hill Tap Room)

(The tap room is open Monday-Wednesday 3 p.m. to midnight, Thursday 3 p.m. to 2 a.m., Friday-Saturday 1 p.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to midnight)

Beers:  Oak Cider, India Black Lager, Double IPA, Milk Stout, Maibock, Peach Pale Ale. Tractor’s Double IPA is heavy in hops and heavy in alcohol. It does not disappoint. In addition to the beers at the Nob Hill tap room, over at ArtBar by Catalyst Club they are not only pouring Tractor beers but have created the first “beer cocktail,” using Hard Cider with brandied cherries and Cherry Brandy Cordial to create The Lady Killer. Stop by, give it a try, and let us know what you think.

News: Tractor’s IPA and Farmer’s Tan Red Ale are now for sale in bottle form. Six-packs can purchased at area liquor establishments, with 13 in the Albuquerque metro area including Jubilation.

Turtle Mountain Brewing Company — (505) 994-9497

(Kitchen hours: Mon–Tues 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Wed–Thurs 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Reminder: TMBC closes early when business dictates.  Please call.)

Beers: Dark Star Black IPA, Genesis IPA, Independence IPA, Summer Scotch, Hefeweizen, Arsenal Porter, Amnesia (Strong Ale), Cabo Lager, Red Rye. Genesis IPA was TMBC’s very respectable entry for this year’s IPA Challenge. TMBC’s website had this to say about the Independence IPA: “This American I.P.A. has a slightly red hue and is packed with the classic hops, Centennials and Cascades.” (6.3% ABV, 75 IBUs) Stoutmeister enjoyed the current batch of the Arsenal Porter during a recent stop by TMBC after covering a Little League tournament (yes, he did that; in the summer, freelance writers take whatever they can get).

News: TMBC’S Hybrid IPA, Triple Play Pale Ale, and Pork and Brew Brown will be making their way back to taps in the coming week.

Cask: TMBC is currently featuring the Dark Star Black IPA on cask.
