Bosque’s new brewhouse is up and running

It has been well over 24 hours since Bosque Brewing’s new system went online for the first time. Heck, it’s even been 24 hours since I stopped by to check things out, and finally I’m getting around to the story. High school baseball is time-consuming, people.

Brewer John Bullard sits atop his throne, er, brewhouse, after finishing his first batch of beer on the new system.

Anyway, as I said, I had the chance to visit Bosque just as they had finished with their first creation on their sparkling new brewhouse. This 15-barrel beauty performed better than anyone expected, or so brewer John Bullard and co-owner Gabe Jensen told me. They brewed up a batch of Brewer’s Boot on there, though the gravity might be a little higher than normal. Hey, it’s a new system, everyone was learning. In the end, though, just about everything went without a hitch.

The new system is a technological wonder. I don’t have an engineering degree, so I can’t really explain what everything there does or does not do. All I know is that the first batch smelled wonderful, and though John and Gabe and the rest of the staff looked tired, they had that special look of exhausted accomplishment that only the truly creative in our society know well.

Bosque has been fighting to keep up with the demands of their thirsty customers. The new system, with its increased storage space (more fermenters, larger keg storage areas), should mean there will be plenty of beer on hand. There is also still plenty of room within the brewery to add more fermenters and bright tanks. The newer, larger walk-in cooler is still under construction, but the smaller cooler is still there for now (Gabe said it will head to Nob Hill when that taproom is ready; there’s still no specific target date for that opening).

Jeff Erway told me the other day at La Cumbre that he visited the Bosque guys before their brewhouse and system went online. Jeff said it was like stepping back in time to when La Cumbre was in its infancy, with all the great promise still ahead. If Jeff has high hopes, I can’t see any reason why the rest of us should not share in those. Bosque has done an amazing job on a tiny little system for over a year. Now they have a true, professional brewing system. More great beer times lie ahead of us.

And who knows, maybe someday they’ll let the Crew help out with a brew on their wonderful system. Under considerable and constant supervision, of course.

Congrats on brew day one, gentlemen. Here is to many more to come.

Cheers!
