The Week Ahead in Beer: Santa Fe doubles up on the release parties

Posted: March 2, 2016 by cjax33 in The Week Ahead in Beer

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s four breweries and a pair of newcomers, one down in Socorro and the other in Los Alamos, also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Santa Fe Brewing has always been good about holding release parties for their major seasonal beers, but it always used to mean their Albuquerque-based fans would have to suck it up and drive to the brewery, or catch the RailRunner, or just figure out some safe way north. With the opening of their ABQ Taproom, however, they can now double up on the release parties so everyone can get a chance to have a little fun without having to travel too far. This Saturday will mark the double release party for Irish Red and the new Chaiway to Hell, a Chai-spiced imperial porter. Up at the brewery, the Sean Healen Band will perform from 4 to 6 p.m. The Bonsai Asian Tacos food truck will also be on hand. It all starts at 11 a.m. at Green Jeans Farmery and at noon at the brewery.

Another rather cool new event this week is over at the Duel Brewing ABQ Taproom on Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. They are hosting The Mad Hatter’s Mixer, a party to raise funds for the New Mexico Ballet Company’s costume department. A portion of beer sales will go to the NMBC. There will be a silent auction for the six main character costumes for their upcoming production of Alice in Wonderland. Winners will be named as benefactors and will take home a poster-sized rendering of an original sketch. There will be live performances and a special preview of Alice’s costume.

On the new beer front this week, there are a lot of options. Bosque has Here, Drink This, a session Baltic porter, and Summer in Germany. Boxing Bear has Baltic Bear Porter on tap and for sale in bombers, plus Kodiak Brown, the winner of the recent home brewing contest at Southwest Grape and Grain. Canteen has a fresh batch of Exodus IPA, plus the new Citra Boost Session IPA. Cazuela’s dipped into the cellar for old favorites Blood Brothers, Primo with spruce tips, Agave, and Festival. Ponderosa tapped Berliner Weisse, Spring Session, and a new Belgian-style version of Stage One DIPA. Rio Bravo will release Karl’s Leichten Bier at a members only gathering Saturday and then to the public Tuesday.

Up in Santa Fe, it’s all quiet.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of Feb. 29.

Chama River Brewing Company — (505) 342-1800

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

La Cumbre Brewing — (505) 872-0225

(Open every day at noon)

Beers: La Roja Grande, It’s Not EVEN Brown, Munchener Dunkel, La Llorona, Cascade Hop Back, Cafe Con Leche. The new Cascade Hop Back (5% ABV, 34 IBU) was made with 100 pounds of whole leaf Cascade. They used 100 percent Vienna malts, which balances it out oh so nicely.

Live Music: Saturday—Watermelon Mountain Jug Band, 7 to 10 p.m.

Other Events: Yoga is back at the taproom every Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Lizard Tail Brewing — (505) 717-1301

(Mon–Weds noon-9 p.m., Thurs–Sat noon-midnight, Sun noon-7 p.m.)

Beers: Legless Double IPA, Plateau Porter, Double Chocolate Stout, Strawberry IPA, Biscochito Brown. The Double Chocolate (8.2% ABV, 45 IBU) is a delicious treat, one that hides the alcohol well. It is also not overwhelming on the chocolate, just a nicely balanced big beer.

Happy Hour/Discounts: Lizard Tail’s happy hour runs seven days a week from 3 to 6 p.m. You get $1 off food, flights, and pints.

Events: Lizard Tail will host Geeks Who Drink every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Every Thursday will now feature karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.

Live Music (West Side): Today (Wednesday)—Alex Maryol, 6 to 9 p.m.; Friday—Cerny Brothers, 6 to 9 p.m.; Saturday—Last Call Band, 6 to 9 p.m.

Nexus Brewery — (505) 242-4100

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m.)

Beers: Equinox, Hoppy Wheat, U.S.S. Simcoe, Barleywine. The Barleywine (10.2% ABV, 33 IBU) is a beauty in the English style. It’s thick, chewy, and rather wonderful, without being overly boozy despite the high ABV. Oh, and it goes great with chicken and waffles.

Happy Hour/Discounts: Monday–Friday, 3 to 5 p.m., get $5 off appetizers

Pi Brewing — (505) 890-9463

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Cardinal Sin Red, Robust Porter, Pi Vapor, Kama Citra IPA, English Summer Ale, Pre-Prohibition Pilsner, Belgian Pumpkin Ale, Winter is Coming. No, Winter is Coming is not just to make you all yearn for the return of Game of Thrones, is a peppermint porter that will keep you into the holiday mood.

News: Nicky V’s Pizzeria has been completely re-branded as Pi Brewing. We have the full story here.

Ponderosa Brewing Co. — (505) 639-5941

(Sun 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m.)

Beers: (Regular) Ghost Train IPA, Rip Saw Red, Crosscut Kolsch, Bellamah Brown, American Wheat; (Seasonal) Turkish Zaftig, Blonde Stout, Alt the Hoople, Berliner Weisse, Spring Session, Stage One DIPA. There has been another seasonal shakeup at Ponderosa, with the biggest name the Stage One. This version is a Belgian-style, so go check it out and ask “why isn’t it Stage Two?”

Red Door Brewing — (505) 633-6675

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fri 11 a.m. to midnight, Sat 7 a.m. to midnight, Sun 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.)

Beers: Shift Ender Golden Lager, Dark Side DIPA, Strong Scotch Ale, Vanilla Cream Ale, Gluten Removed Roamer Red. This batch of the Strong Scotch Ale is quite a malty, peaty beast of a beer. Those two different flavors work in balance, so the beer is neither too peaty, nor too malty sweet.

Live Music: Monday—The Draft Sessions Open Mic, 7 to 9 p.m.

Other Events: Saturday morning will mark another round of Beer and Breakfast, with Barclays Premier League soccer on the telly! From 7 to 10 a.m. you can gather with friends for some food truck-supplied goodies with a pint of beer.

Rio Bravo Brewing Company — (505) 900-3909

(Mon–Thu noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–11 p.m., Sun noon–9 p.m.)

Yes, we helped make that monstrosity of a barrel-aged imperial. It’s a decadent 11-percent ABV, so be careful when consuming.

Live Music: Today (Wednesday)—Kevin Cummings Jr., 5:30 p.m.; Thursday—Shilo Gold, 4 p.m., Leah Leyva & the Band, 6:30 p.m.; Friday—Shayna Rain, 5 p.m., Lenin & McCarthy, 7 p.m.; Saturday—Black Smoke Blues Band, 6:30 p.m.

Sandia Chile Grill — (505) 798-1970

(Mon–Sat 8 a.m.–8 p.m., Sun 8 a.m.–6 p.m.)

Beers: Call the brewery for an updated list.

Sidetrack Brewing — (505) 288-6468

(Mon–Thurs 3–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–10 p.m., Sun noon–8 p.m.)

Beers: Pub Ale, RailHead Red, 3:10 to Belen Brown, Dark Engine Stout, Switchgear IPA 1, Switchgear IPA 2. The Pub Ale (5.1% ABV, 30 IBU) is listed as an English mild, but has far more flavor than most examples of that style. It has a chewy, almost biscuity quality from the malts and English yeast.

Cask: All Aboard Pale Ale (5.6% ABV, 40 IBU) is now available.

News: Take note of the new operating hours above.

Starr Brothers Brewing — (505) 492-2752

Saturday will feature the Cowboy Coffee Stout release at 4 p.m., followed by a screening of the UFC 196 fight with Holly Holm vs. Miesha Tate starting at 6 p.m. There will be a $5 cover charge, but let’s face it, that’s pretty light for a big pay-per-view event.

Every Monday at Wells Park you can now find Mondays on the Mic hosted by Alex Maryol starting at 6 p.m. Then at 8 p.m., kick back and watch the latest episode of Better Call Saul on the projector screen.

Kamikaze Karaoke is back at Wells Park on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Beers: All Peached Up, Arsenal Porter, Hockey Teeth, The Kansas City Shuffle. The Shuffle (4.7% ABV, 34 IBU) is a S.M.A.S.H. made with Falconer’s Flight hops and Vienna malt.

News: 22-ounce bombers of Wilde Jagd, Turtle Mountain’s first bottled beer, are still for sale at the brewery. Unsure if you want to buy one? Let Franz Solo tell you why you need this beer.

Santa Fe breweries

Blue Corn Brewery — (505) 438-1800

(Daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Barleywine, Occupational Hazard IPA, Recreational Session IPA, Fuzzy Snuggler. The Fuzzy Snuggler (7.7% ABV) is a winter warmer that uses copious amounts of chocolate malts and caramel malts. Sounds like something we could use out by Franz Solo’s fire pit one of these nights.

Duel Brewing Company — (505) 474-5301

Second Street has kicked off their annual celebration of the “infamous” Ringwood Yeast starting with the release of Outlier Special Bitter. Trust us, you gotta try it to understand it. It’s nothing like the usual bitters that Second Street releases (and you can compare it to Rod’s Best right now).

Live Music (Original location): Friday—The Bus Tapes; Saturday—Swing Soleil

Live Music (Railyard): Friday—Greg Butera & Band; Saturday—Welsh & Watt

Other Events: Every Tuesday night, the Railyard location will have Open Mic Night hosted by Ben Wright. Every Thursday night, Geeks Who Drink will be at the Railyard at 8 p.m.
