The Week Ahead in Beer: Bring on the barrel-aged brews and black metal

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

We have entered one of the truly great times of the year, when the biggest dark beers roll out into the taprooms, and many metal bands take up tours around the country. This Friday, La Cumbre releases one of our favorite annual brews, La Negra, a bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stout on tap and in bottles. It will be available at both taprooms starting at noon, and hurry over, because we are going to buy a lot of them. Meanwhile, out in Moriarty, Sierra Blanca will be releasing its barrel-aged Whiskey Stout on tap and in six-pack bottles, with the six-packs also available at stores in Albuquerque. Up in Santa Fe on Saturday night, the Denver blackened sludge band Oryx descends upon Tumbleroot, with local support from Dysphotic, Lilith, and Blood Wolf. It all starts up at 7 p.m. and there is a $10 charge at the door. If you need even more metal, and want to support both local bands and a local brewery/distillery, this is worth the drive up from Albuquerque.

There are also a couple of anniversary parties this weekend. Kilt Check celebrates its third anniversary all day Saturday, with Odd Dog performing at 2 p.m., and Kookie Jones and the Groove Maneuvers at 7:30. There will also be live T-shirt printing, axe throwing, and more. Over at Thirsty Eye, the brewery will celebrating the 20th anniversary of its neighbor/sister business, Exhibit/208. Artwork from all 20 years will be shown in the gallery and within Thirsty Eye from 5 to 9, and this one is free to attend.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Black Snout coasts into Victory Lane Black IPA. Nexus is releasing Equinox Pumpkin Spice Ale today (Wednesday). Ponderosa expects to have Hop-Mosa and S’mores Stout available soon on tap. Rio Bravo put its Grab ’em by the Putin Russian Imperial Stout on a nitro tap. Sidetrack has added Rusty Red Ale and Vanilla Coffee Porter. Starr Brothers brings back Brown Chicken Brown Cow and also adds Spunkles Uncle, a vanilla porter. Steel Bender wants you to pucker up with Funky Pucker. Thirsty Eye will have Biscochito Liquido available Friday.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street chases a fresh batch of Red Comet. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has more Little Bird Blonde on tap.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of November 4.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week.
