The Week Ahead in Beer: La Cumbre collaborates with 2 West Coast heavyweights

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

La Cumbre has made a good habit of working with other regional breweries to create some outstanding beers in recent years. There have been some great stouts and hazy IPAs as a result, and this Friday, we get Big West, a West Coast-style DIPA that will join their ranks. This hop-forward beast was made in collaboration with two of the best on the coast, Modern Times and Pizza Port Brewing. There will be cans for sale starting at noon at both La Cumbre taprooms, and it will also be on tap for a limited time. It may be dark beer season, but even we don’t mind the occasional break, and we gotta figure hopheads starved for lupulin are gonna be lined up at the door.

Two events worth highlighting are at Sidetrack on Saturday and Tractor Wells Park on Friday night. Going with the latter first, the Desert Darlings are back to jazz things up with the Prohibition Edition of Hops & Dreams at 8 p.m. The following day, Sidetrack celebrates its fourth anniversary with My Sweet Basil out front, new brew on tap inside, and other fun happenings from noon to 5 p.m.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Boxing Bear and Starr Brothers have a collab of their own, Nutz N Nibz, a chocolate peanut butter porter, on tap at both breweries. Canteen takes flight with Colibri, a new schwarzbier. Ex Novo has more Mountains & Mountains on tap, plus two new beers in 2020K Gold, a Citra SMASH made with New Mexico-grown barley, and Rowers Keep on Rowing, a chocolate cream ale. Flix Brewhouse made a batch of LA’s Finest American Pale Ale in time for the new movie Bad Boys for Life, plus its new Franchise Series of hop-forward beers starts with a Double Dry Hopped Mosaic New England IPA. Kaktus kicks up a Barleywine, new IPA, and Whiskey Ginger. Marble gets a little smoky with the return of Sympathy for the Pork Chop. Nexus has some small batches of beer left over after the closure of the Silver Taproom, starting with Archaic Mosaic IPA and Maple Bacon Porter going on tap this week, plus Oralé Mexican Lager goes on tap this Thursday. Ponderosa is feeling summery with a Grapefruit Pale Ale. As we mentioned in a separate story, Red Door has Mail Order Russian Imperial Stout back on tap and in bottles this Saturday. Sidetrack has three new beers on tap already with Proletariat Pale Lager, Scottish Ale, and Bear Wheatness, and more will be available for the anniversary party. Steel Bender roars to life with Chewie-BOCK-Ahhh on tap this Thursday, plus special bottles of the new Albaricoque Viejo will be on sale.

Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales scrolled ahead to Agent Scully – Season Three, Episode Two IPA. Second Street keeps it varied with new batches of Pivotal IPA, British Mild, and MBV Stout. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row keeps it light with California Common and English IPA.
