The Week Ahead in Beer: Keep it local this Super Bowl Sunday

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Just in case you have been existing outside all forms of communication, the Super Bowl is this Sunday afternoon, mercifully New England Patriots free this time around. A number of breweries will be staying open to show the big game, so if you do not have a party to attend, head on down. Black Snout, Brew Lab 101, Kilt Check, and The 377 are all hosting watch parties. You can also place to-go orders for food and beers with Starr Brothers. We are sure many breweries will have additional specials announced between now and game time. We did learn that La Reforma will close before the game starts, so if you want to grab some beer or food from there, head over before 3 p.m. In fact, every brewery will be open Sunday, so make sure to fill those growlers/crowlers, grab a four- or six-pack, and then pig out on the food, wonder who the heck thought that one commercial was a good idea, and root for an entertaining game. After all is said and done, get home safely, so then we can all complain about our hangovers to our co-workers on Monday.

Before all that happens Sunday, head up to Bosque North in Bernalillo on Saturday night. There will be a screening of the Brewers Association documentary For the Love of Craft at 5:30 p.m., followed by a special panel discussion of local industry members led by New Mexico Brewers Guild executive director Leah Black. Also on hand will be Bosque’s John Bullard and Jess Griego, Tractor’s Skye Devore, Sidetrack’s Dan Herr and Anne O’Neill, and a certain beer writer guy who will probably be there for random references to hockey and heavy metal. The best part of this? It is free to attend, but you can also donate money to Australian fire relief efforts.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Black Snout has Fade to Black (Ale) on tap. Bombs Away goes big with Frag Out Imperial Stout. Bosque hops to it with Epithany Red and But Who’s Counting. Bow & Arrow drops another decadent pastry stout on Friday with Brunch Special, a French toast-style imperial. Canteen will have a small amount of barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout at both locations on Friday. Cantero added a Munich Dunkel. Ex Novo takes a swing at Sky Punch IPA and Brown is the New Black. La Cumbre is feeling positively Parisian with Pilsner Le Francais. Marble introduced Rye IPA over the weekend. Nexus will have a small amount of Sun Dust Pale Ale on tap starting Thursday. Ponderosa keeps it clean and simple with Amber Ale. Sidetrack added Spring Fever Hazy IPA and Miami Weiss for its anniversary party last weekend. Turtle Mountain rolls out a slew of new seasonals with Mr. Hoover’s Steam, Claymore’s Fuller, The Maelstrom IPA, and Metal Snake Dry Irish Stout.

Up in Santa Fe, Chili Line sent us a full beer lineup update, so scroll down to their entry to see what is now on tap. Second Street has a fresh batch of Idaho #7 Pale Ale. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row drops some Precious Pale Ale, Mexi Lager, and Titterton’s Ale. Down south, Truth or Consequences smooths out with Buena Vista Lager.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of January 27.
