The Week Ahead in Beer: All the brews you can get to go during this quarantine

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Welcome to a new and slightly different edition of Week Ahead from this week forward. All of our breweries are no longer able to have customers come in and sit down for a pint or two, now they are only allowed to have beer (and food) available for takeout orders. For every brewery that has chosen to remain open, we are now listing their current hours of operation, which are of course subject to change. Beyond that, we are breaking down each brewery capsule to reflect what beers are on tap that can be ordered as a growler or crowler fill (and if they offer crowlers, if you can bring in your own growler or have to buy a new one, and so on). Then there are the pre-packaged beers in cans and/or bottles. As always, we put out the requests to every brewery, but not every one of them responds, so please bear with us and the breweries. We will do our best to make sure you know what is available to order in advance over the phone (which we highly suggest to minimize social contact) or even in a few cases, online.

Breweries, if there is anything not in here that you would like the public to know about, get in touch with us ASAP. We can continuously update this post as needed.

On the new beer front this week, there are only a scant few options to check out. Boxing Bear brings back New Mexikolsch in cans and for crowler fills on Friday. Brew Lab 101 rowed down to collect some Pecos River Cider. Canteen has a new batch of Social Capital made with passionfruit and lime. Ex Novo has cans and growler fills of Foam on the Range Citra Blonde Ale. La Cumbre will have Acclimated APA back in cans this Friday. Ponderosa will have six-pack cans of Blood Orange Double Wit back in stock later this week. Quarter Celtic airs a sequel, Laces Out 2: When Nature Hops, a new hazy IPA available for growler/crowler fills. Red Door tapped its collaboration with the Crew, Czar of Aberdeen, our bonkers Baltic porter/Scotch wee heavy hybrid that is perfect for growler fills. Sidetrack brought back Buzz Bomb, while also adding the appropriately named Cloudy with a Chance of Apocalypse Hazy IPA for crowler/growler fills. Starr Brothers has a new peach/hibiscus gose, Stranger Danger, ready for crowler/growler fills. Turtle Mountain tapped its 21st Anniversary Dortmunder for crowler fills.

Up in Santa Fe, Beer Creek introduces the new Mucho Gluto Wheat and Black Wedding Black IPA for crowler and growler fills. Rowley Farmhouse Ales has Dreams of Cats, a Belgian strong golden ale, for crowler fills. Further north, Red River tapped its Contagion Blueberry Sour for growler/crowler fills. Down south, Truth or Consequences added I Got Soul Saison for crowler/growler fills.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of March 23.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Growler/Crowler Fills” for beers on draft, and “Can/Bottle” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.

  1. Arron Layns says:

Dear Dark Side Brew Crew! I wonder if you’ve heard anything about why the breweries seem to have stopped producing (or maybe releasing) new beers? It seems like they would have had things in the works prior to the effects of social distancing, but the new beer releases seemed to have stopped as soon as the State-wide orders were in place. I understand why they wouldn’t necessarily be releasing new beers over the next couple weeks because perhaps they slowed or stopped brewing. But as a consumer, the new beers are one of the main reasons that keep me visiting breweries every week or two. That being said, I know I keep trying to support our local breweries by continuing my purchasing.

If you look at the current edition of Week Ahead, which was just published a few minutes ago, you’ll see there are 16 new beers and ciders becoming available this week. Some will be in cans or bottles, others will be available for crowler/growler fills. That current edition has every beer currently available at the breweries that remained open (or at least, those that informed us of what they have ready to go).
