Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Never in our lives did we think a comment on one of our Facebook posts would ever inspire the name of a beer, but this is 2020, and anything can happen. Rewind a few weeks ago and there was some, shall we say “spirited” debate among folks about one of the public health orders. A friend of ours from the local beer scene, who also happens to be a registered nurse, told us after a frustrating sequence of back-and-forth comments with another reader, “I am just full of rage and science!” When I responded that someone should put that on a T-shirt, not only did someone go ahead and do just that, but Thirsty Eye head brewer John Kofonow purchased one of those shirts, and took it a step further by naming his new India Pale Lager, Rage and Science. Going a step further, John and the Thirsty Eye team have also decided to offer discounts on all pints, growler/crowler fills, and merchandise to local healthcare workers. Now that is something we can all raise a pint to this weekend, preferably, of course, of Rage and Science IPL.
On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Bosque drops a few summery additions with Day Lite Lager, Summer in Georgia, and The Year from Helles. Bow & Arrow will have Rancho Del Sol, a new Mexican lager, on tap this Thursday, and a special collaboration with Farmington’s Lauter Haus Brewing will arrive Friday. There will only be a limited amount of Nuevo Amor Mexicano Imperial Stout, a 14.4-percent ABV monster made with chocolate, vanilla, and Mexican chiles that was originally intended to celebrate the opening of the Rambler Taproom in Farmington, which is on hold due to the pandemic. Boxing Bear gets back into the specialty can game this Saturday with four-packs of Falcon Mountain IPA. Canteen is tapping more of its delicious Helles Awaits on Friday. Ex Novo gets a little silly with current events with the new Malt, Hops, Yeast, Camera, TV, a Kveik IPA that will be tapped this week, plus a new mystery canned offering is coming soon as well. Gravity Bound sticks the landing with the new Garden Spot, a cucumber basil gose. High and Dry has fresh batches of Hurry Sundown Wheat and Summer Shapes IPA. Ponderosa will bring back Golden Grahams Amber this weekend. Quarter Celtic has Kill or be Kilt back on tap. Steel Bender is starting autumn early with OktoberFiesta on tap and in cans this Thursday (we will have more on this in a separate story).
Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales rolls out Brother Nelson, a saison dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin, on tap and in four-pack cans. Further north, Red River Brewing contracts a case of Cabin Fever Pilsner.
(WEEKEND UPDATES) As per usual, more beers arrived at the end of the week to make our lives better. Ale Republic tapped a new Belgian ale, Lil Peaches. Canteen created a tongue twister with Pomraznillaberry on draft. Ex Novo will be releasing four-pack cans of Bedrock Push Pop, a creamsicle-inspired hazy IPA, on Monday. Marble released a limited amount of Mountain Fog Hazy DIPA in cans (call to make sure it’s still available before you visit any taproom). Sidetrack has more Buzz Bomb, while also adding the new Wit Zombie. Rowley Farmhouse Ales may still have some four-pack cans of its version of Black is Beautiful. Also, sad news from Santa Fe as Second Street Rufina has been closed temporarily after two employees tested positive for COVID-19. When it reopens after a thorough cleaning and all remaining staff test negative, we will let you all know. The original location remains open for patio beers and beer to-go only.
Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of August 3.
