The Week Ahead in Beer: Bombs Away makes use of unique hop blend created by veterans

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Today (Wednesday) is Veterans Day, which also means that it is the third anniversary week for Bombs Away Beer Company. This year, the brewery has acquired the special Veterans Blend from Yakima Chief Hops. Created by the military veterans working at YCH and veteran-owned breweries across the country, this special hop pellet is a literal blend of five different hops — Idaho 7, Sabro, Mosaic, HBC 630, HBC 692 — fused into a single package that was available for breweries and homebrewers as well (it has sold out, FYI). Bombs Away put the hop blend into its 3rd Anniversary Red IPA, which will be released on draft this week. If you get the chance, stop by and grab a pint or fill a crowler/growler and honor our veterans and active-duty military, while also wishing Bombs Away a happy anniversary during these tough times. Also, keep an eye out for other specials today for veterans. We did see that Boxing Bear will offer $1 off pints and 10 percent off package, Marble offers $4 classic pints and $2 off classic six-packs, Sobremesa is offering $1 off pints, $3 off any entree, and 10 percent off beer to go, while Starr Brothers is offering $1 off pints, Steel Bender will take 10 percent off your total bill, food and drinks, and The 377 will take $1 off all pints and food.

On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Boese Brothers wakes up with Java Porter on draft. Bosque brewed up a new brown ale called Parlour Games. Canteen tapped more Irish Red. Casa Vieja brings back Gold Medal Hefe, while also adding the the aptly-named The World is Nuts Coconut Stout. Differential added two new brews with Nut Brown and Piñon Stout. Ex Novo spoke up about Verbose Verbiage, a new West Coast IPA, now in cans and on draft, plus Where the Mild Things Are returns on tap. Gravity Bound keeps the haze craze going with Laminar Flow, a DIPA, and Uniform Motion, an IPA. High and Dry continues to fill out its taps with all of its own beers, adding Bad Interview Lager, Black Hole’s Sun Stout, Strategic Bankruptcy Hazy Pale Ale, and Special Shapes #4 IPA. Marble tapped Aurum Lager at all locations. Ponderosa could turn over half its taps by this weekend with Peach Wheat, Juicy Lucy Lager, Baltic Porter, and Amarillo Pale Ale each waiting for a spot to open up. Red Door will be canning its popular New England IPA for the first time this Thursday. Rio Bravo added an Imperial IPA and Marshmallow Chai Russian Imperial Stout. Starr Brothers resurrects an old favorite in There Gose Them Boyzz. Steel Bender rolls out bottles of Wild & Krieky this Thursday. Tractor ran out of Turkey Drool a while ago, which somehow we didn’t notice, but no one should panic because a fresh batch is going on draft at all taprooms this week.

Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales flipped the script with its IPA as Agent Scully – Season 4, Episode 2 is now on draft. Second Street recently tapped a mouthful of a beer, Bernsteinfarbenes Weizen. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row brought back Rendija Red on draft and Ladron Peak Elixir in bottles.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation.
