The Week Ahead in Beer: Raise your horns to a decadent decade of La Cumbre

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

A 10-year anniversary is a big deal for any business. When Marble turned 10, it threw a giant street party. We did not expect anything of that size or scope from La Cumbre, but it still felt like something big was brewing. Oh, but then along came the pandemic, and now a decade of excellent beers will be celebrated in a somewhat subdued fashion, just like everything else this year. La Cumbre officially turns 10 on Thursday, and will mark the big day with the release of its 10 Month Barrel-Aged Baltic Porter. Jeff Erway and company took a Baltic, aged it for those 10 months in bourbon-maple barrels, and will have it ready for us all in four-pack cans. There will be some other archived beers being brought out over the course of the week/weekend, there’s a new Vienna Lager on draft already, and Terminally Chill Hazy IPA will also return with a fresh batch in cans this Friday. Even though only a handful of people at a time can celebrate on either La Cumbre taproom patio, we will all be raising our glasses, there or at home, this weekend in honor of one of our favorite breweries. Here’s to the next 10 years, and a proper post-pandemic celebration!

On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Bow & Arrow gets holiday hoppy on Tuesday with cans of Sleigh All Day, Then IPA, and (UPDATE) before that Buffalo Plaid Baltic Porter cans arrive Friday. Boxing Bear tapped Quick Jabs Hazy IPA, and Standing 8 Stout has also returned. Brew Lab 101 will warm you up with Hot Cider Toddy. Casa Vieja brings back a crowd favorite with Ghost Stout on draft. Ex Novo will have a small-batch schwarzbier, Heart of Rubbo, available in cans this Friday, and (UPDATE) before that comes the slightly-delayed cans of Ruminator Doppelbock on Thursday. High and Dry rolls out a new fruited sour, Rip Van Wink-ale. Lava Rock is back open with more Gila Gose and Lava Juice Hazy IPA on tap. Marble rolled out Cascade Citra IPA on draft. Nexus tapped more of its delicious Russian imperial stout, Lush & Aphotic. Red Door will have Major Tom to Ground Control Hazy IPA in cans and on draft this Friday, while also releasing Pining for Maple Breakfast Brown in cans for the first time (it will be on draft, too). Steel Bender will tap a big (10.3% ABV) brew this Thursday with ‘Tis the Saison.

Up in Santa Fe, Beer Creek has plenty more beers in cans, including a fresh batch of San Marcos Stout. Second Street has released Breaking Plaid, a scrumptious Scotch ale, in cans for the first time. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row added a Citra SMASH on draft, plus bottles of 1864 XXXX Christmas Ale.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of December 7.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.

On December 5th, Bosque Taproom Nob Hill (Andy) told me that they will only exchange “house” growlers and they do not do growler fills. Please add this information to your Week Ahead in Beer summary if confirmed. Thanks.
