Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

We had noticed over the last few weeks, usually after this column was published, that Casa Vieja has quietly been inviting solo musicians back to perform on the patio during good weather days. Now two more breweries are bringing some good tunes back to their patios, and a third has plans to start up a week from today. No, these will not be full-sized, multi-person bands, and sorry, fellow metalheads, but there are no mosh pits in our immediate future (get your vaccines so we can hopefully get back to the pummeling this fall). Brew Lab 101 is welcoming local fixture Eryn Bent to the patio this Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. Sobremesa will be hosting its first musical performance that same night from 6 to 9 p.m. as longtime friend-of-the-Crew Arthur Meadors and two of his colleagues will be playing a mix of blues and rock. If you ever saw Citizens of Tape City at Marble, you’ll know what you’re in for this weekend. Tumbleroot will then launch its own music series at its Agua Fria taproom on Wednesday, April 7, and we will have more details about that next week. We have all missed live music, in all its forms and genres, over the last year. We will gladly take whatever little bit of additional normalcy its return provides. Oh, and if you do go, please tip generously.

As for can releases, we start off with not a can, but a bottle, as La Cumbre brings back Father Nelson Triple IPA in 22-ounce bombers this Friday, just in time to fight the worst of allergy season (save us, hops, please!). Ex Novo did indeed finally release ‘Cot Red-Handed in cans earlier this week. We already went into detail about the new Steel Bender charity release, Shine On Saison, which debuts Thursday. Further north, Beer Creek is releasing the first cans in their series of big beers, Dragon King Imperial Stout, this Friday.

On the new draft beer front this week, there some fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Boese Brothers recently added Imperial Porter and Cherry Sour to its lineup. Bombs Away will unveil S.A.F. Pomegranate this Friday. Boxing Bear kicks back with some Huell Melon Lager on tap. Brew Lab 101 goes big with The Singularity Imperial Stout. Casa Vieja has a fresh batch of The World is Nuts Coconut Stout. Ex Novo dives headfirst into some crushable brews with V for Vienna Lager and Krispy’s Kolsch back on tap. High and Dry discovers some True Affection with its new IPA. La Cumbre starts counting with Farmhouse #1 on tap. Nexus brings back a fan favorite in Trampled by Tangerines. Quarter Celtic flips the calendar forward with a new batch of Marzen. Starr Brothers rolls out a new Belgian white, Poubelle Blanche. Thirsty Eye taps a newcomer in Up and Coming Blonde, which was fruited with kumquats.

Up in Santa Fe, Beer Creek has also tapped the new Lone Butter Lager. Hidden Mountain tapped its aptly named Hidden Mountain Stout. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has a fresh batch of Little Bird Blonde taking flight.

EASTER CLOSINGS: Quite a few breweries, Casa Vieja being the exception with some advance notice, waited until the last minute to announce they are closed Sunday. The list includes High and Dry, Hops Brewery, Red Door (all locations), Sobremesa, Starr Brothers, Tractor (all locations except Nob Hill), and Turtle Mountain.

(WEEKEND UPDATES) A few additional beers popped up around town, and parts nearby. Ale Republic tapped The Blonde. Bow & Arrow brought back its dark sour, Strange Country, in bottles. Ex Novo tapped a new Flanders-style red ale, Olympus Mons. Gravity Bound added a hop-forward lager called Young in the Eyes. Marble resurrects an old favorite in Eastbound & Brown. Sidetrack goes south to tap NZ Pils, and there may still be some Basecamp IPA on cask available (call to find out).
