Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
There is not much this week in the way of new canned offerings (as of our Wednesday publication, at least), but we wanted to highlight a couple good ones coming out at Ex Novo this Friday. After a long wait for its fans, Pastel Polo returns in cans only. Made with key lime, vanilla, and lactose, it definitely hits a lot of those dessert beer notes. For those who would rather indulge in hops, snag some No Time for Fantasies, a new West Coast IPA available in cans and on draft. Brewed with Amarillo, Chinook, Citra, CTZ, and Simcoe hops, it should help you fight the never-ending pollen swarms that have taken to the skies. If you want something a smidge lighter, indulge in the return of Enzo Italian Pilsner on draft.
Earlier this week, a couple of us from the Crew visited Isotopes Park for a baseball game, which also enabled us to scout out the beer options for Saturday’s New Mexico United home opener. Sadly, the craft was severely lacking at the ballpark, though not all the concession stands and separate carts along the concourse were open. Other than some $12 tallboy cans of Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas, and $11 pints of Isotopes Slammin’ Amber, there was no craft in sight. The cart that used to have Bosque beers on tap by the third base entrance is just selling the aforementioned tallboy cans. The Santa Fe 7K IPA taps are gone, too. Basically, if you want local craft, you will probably have to drink it in advance of the game. We supposed this is just another pandemic casualty, but it is sad to see our lone professional sports stadium go almost completely macro/import.
On the new draft beer front this week, there some fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Bosque has a new juicy (but not hazy) pale ale called The Tallest Duck available at North and Nob Hill. Boxing Bear strikes fast with Headbutt Hazy IPA. Brew Lab 101 has a new Watermelon Cider, a sessionable version of its X-IPA, and will soon add Heisenweizen (named for you-know-who) to taps later this week. Canteen is feeling light with some Apricot Wheat. Casa Vieja shares some beach memories with Sand in My Shorts Tropical IPA. High and Dry has tapped American Satire IPA, the “big brother” to its Ghose of a Moon Pale Ale. La Cumbre added a new ESB, Bitter Sons. Marble has tapped its own Apricot Wheat, as well as Azacca IPA. Ponderosa should have more Hop Mosa on draft by this weekend, replacing its Pilsner. Quarter Celtic brings back a fan favorite with Dark Pedro. ReSource is tapping Fugitive Dust Hazy IPA this Sunday to go with a pet adoption event on site held by Watermelon Mountain Ranch. Starr Brothers brings back Starrphire Pilsner, while also adding In-a-Gose-Da-Vida. Turtle Mountain’s new maibock, Oh, Mai!, is now on tap.
Up in Santa Fe, Beer Creek has the first all-New Mexico (ingredients) IPA, Get to the Hoppa, coming out this Friday. Hidden Mountain finds Feathers’ Brown Ale. Rowley Farmhouse Ales has tapped Petit Blanche – Blueberry. Tumbleroot has Blood Orange Cranberry Red Sour and Gin Barrel-Aged Double Brown in bottles, with Vienna Lager and Dortmunder Lager now on draft. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has tapped Kiwi Lager and Tripel Threat. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing added Blood Moon Tart Cherry Lager.
Also, remember to get some Golden Girls, the collaboration beer made by the New Mexico chapter of the Pink Boots Society. The supply is limited in six-pack cans and on draft, as it was split up between 13 breweries (Steel Bender has already run out, FYI), so go grab some of this delicious Belgian golden strong and support the women working in our breweries. Follow this link for the full list of participating breweries and an interview with Rio Bravo’s Lindsey Baker, who created the recipe.
Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of May 10.
To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
