The Week Ahead in Beer: Slowly getting back into the events groove

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

As many of you have probably noticed by now, events are returning to breweries, from live music to charity fundraisers and more. It has been a bit of a chore tracking down everything that is going on, and often becomes frustrating when we realize that some events were missed. In some cases, we overlook them (because it has been a long time since we had to look, period), and in some cases, the breweries forget to post anything until the absolute last minute, after this weekly feature is published. All that we can ask for from everyone is a little patience right now as we all get back into the groove. But, rather than just sound like a bit of a downer to start the week, we wanted to highlight a few cool events going down over the next few days. First up, every Wednesday is now Desert Records Day at High and Dry, with the brewery featuring a different musical group represented by the Albuquerque-based label. Desert Records includes local acts such as Red Mesa, as well as bands from outside of New Mexico, including today’s featured artist, The Misery Men. Tractor Wells Park is featuring Tractor of Terror this Thurday at 7 p.m., with the horror classic “Pet Semetary” on screen. Due to the July 4 holiday, the monthly Albuquerque Artwalk was pushed back to this Friday, and Red Door Downtown will be participating, featuring art by Mr. Melty and music from DJ Ren starting at 5 p.m. That same night, Thirsty Eye will be featuring its first music in ages with The Dawn Hotel from 7 to 9, plus an art show from Rocky Norton. Tractor is also getting in on the art show fun as Art on the Rio presents Michael E. Martinez on Friday at 5. Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales is hosting another Pulls for Pups on Sunday as Upslope Brewing will hold a tap takeover, with proceeds benefiting Española Valley Animal Humane, starting at 11:30 a.m., with pups on hand for adoptions from 1 to 4 p.m. Finally, Tumbleroot Agua Fria brings back Metal Mondays (music to our ears) with a full lineup of bands starting at 8 p.m. (for more, see their capsule below).

Oh, and we did want everyone to take note that Crew member Brandon is now playing bass for Itami, a local hardcore band, and will be one of the opening acts for the Carnifex show this Thursday night at Launchpad. Alas, if you did not purchase a ticket yet, you are out of luck, because the show is sold out. Keep an eye out for future Itami shows, and raise a pint to our brother.

As of our Wednesday publication of this column, we know of only two new canned beers coming out this week. Steel Bender goes big with Double Raspberry Dynamite this Thursday. Bow & Arrow will be releasing the fourth version of Hola Hazy IPA this Friday.

On the new draft beer front this week, there some additional fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Ale Republic shakes up its lineup with the return of Best Coast IPA, Cedro Stout, and Red Mountain. Bosque recently tapped a new hazy IPA, Hook, Line & Sinker. Canteen brought back Blood Orange Wheat as the temperature starts to rise again. Casa Vieja sneaks up on everyone with Unmasked Lager. Gravity Bound revives When Lightning Strikes (Pilsner) and Background Talent (Hazy Pale Ale), plus a new, as-yet-unnamed hazy DIPA will arrive Thursday. Harmon Lane keeps it cool with Norwegian Pilsner. High and Dry decided to Shake it 3X with its new lager. Marble has Safeword IPA back on draft. Nexus is celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend (more in a separate story, we promise) with Warp Bubble IPA and Beam Me Up (Higher) Scotty on tap. Red Door brings back Lemonade Stand at its downtown and Clovis taprooms. Starr Brothers added From the Hip (American Pale Ale) and Starr Hazer (IPA). Turtle Mountain pays homage to an American classic with its new American pale ale, 505 Sierra Nueva.

Up in Santa Fe, Tumbleroot merges the best of American and Belgium with its Transatlantic IPA. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row goes light with American Wheat and then goes dark with Campfire S’mores Stout. To the east in Moriarty, Sierra Blanca has its popular Dos Hefe on draft.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation.
