The Week Ahead in Beer: Oktoberfest is upon us, raise your steins!

Greetings all! Franz Solo here, filling in on the Week Ahead in Beer to keep us all up to date on the beers flowing and beer events happening in our fair neck of the woods.

Mid-September is one of my favorite times of year. It signals the traditional start of Oktoberfest (sadly the Oktoberfest was cancelled once more this year due to the pandemic), brings about the advent of Autumn and all of the wonderful malty brews that come with the season, and also happens to coincide with my anniversary. This year is of particular significance as it was 10 years ago, founding crew members Stoutmeister and Erock, joined me and a few others on my bachelor party brewery crawl which ranged from Rio Rancho to downtown Burque. As it turns out, this was the inspiration for starting Dark Side Brew Crew which somehow, has survived the decade and has taken us on so many adventures together. I’m not sure what the future holds, but suffice it to say I will do my utmost to keep this going with the rest of the crew while Stoutmeister enjoys a well earned break.

With GABF medals having been awarded over this past weekend, we have a few offerings from New Mexico to try on draft or in packaged form. Ex Novo’s gold medal winning Threat Level Turquoise is available on draft and there are a few cans still available. Ponderosa has just tapped their gold medal winning Italian Pilsner. Marble has their silver medal winning East Side Special bitter on draft at all locations. Second Street Brewing has their silver medal winning Oktoberfest available in cans and on draft.

Events: Sobremesa celebrates their first anniversary starting Friday and going all weekend long with live music, the release of their anniversary beer, Odd Yiere. There will be food specials, giveaways and more as part of their celebration. Additional details will come tomorrow in a full writeup.Solo

Marblefest returns on Saturday with German style lagers from Bow & Arrow, Boxing Bear, Canteen, Ex Novo, La Cumbre, Nexus, Palmer’s, and Tractor. Live music from 2-10 p.m. from Dee Brown Situation, Chris Dracup, Katy P and the Business, and The Mango Cakes. The event has a $5 cover at/after 2 p.m.

Canteen Brewhouse hosts a Hatch Chile roast this Saturday courtesy of Morrow Farms which runs from 9-5 p.m. email canteenbrewhouse@gmail.com to order.

Sierra Blanca launches their part of collaboration brew One For 5 (benefitting the Storehouse) this Friday starting at 4 p.m. with live music from Outlaw N Sinners from 5-8 p.m.

On the new beer front this week we have a fair number of options just prior to what is traditionally Oktoberfest weekend: Bosque has tapped Pink Lemonade, a kettle sour brewed with copious amounts of raspberry and lemon. Bow and Arrow gets us in the spirit of the season with a double release on Thursday with cans of Oktoberfest (also on draft) and bottles of Asleep in the Desert, a sour ale aged for over a year and conditioned on local Seyval Blanc grapes from Sheehan Winery. Casa Vieja has just tapped their fest bier inspired version of Oktoberfest. Gravity Bound gives us Root to Rind, a Gose with blueberries and lemon juice steeped with lemon rind and ginger root. Harmon Lane sees the return of Mercia’s APA (American Pale Ale) and Oktoberfestivus, their take on the brau of the season. La Cumbre brings us Czech Pils 12º, Drenched Wet Hop IPA, and Mango Wheat. Marble brings us Abbey Gold, a Trappist style “lawnmower” beer which is certainly in tune with our weather at present. Ponderosa brings us Peach Wheat on draft and in cans, Oktoberfestbier on draft and the aforementioned GABF Gold Medal Winning Italian Pilsner as well. Sobremesa celebrates their first anniversary with Odd Yiere, a Biere de Garde aged in Sheehan Winery barrels, available Friday, more on this in detail tomorrow – Solo. Tractor brings back Tractoberfest on Friday in time for the festive weekend. Toltec and Turtle mountain have their wet hopped collaboration Tortuga de Tolteca on draft at last. Turquoise Trail releases Cracked Earth IPA brewed with Zappa, Taiheke and Lemodrop hops.

Update: Rowley Farmhouse Ales gets a bit cheeky as they continue their anniversary celebration with Reinheistgenot, a Kolsch-style ale with limes added. Boxing Bear is releasing their OktoBEARFest in cans this Saturday and has also just tapped Bear Fest Lager with Hallertau Blanc and Mandarina Bavaria. Beer Creek Brewing Company releases their Märzen this Friday. Ex Novo releases Infinite Horizons, a hazy DIPA (limited quantity) in cans this Friday at noon. Gravity Bound has tapped Magnetic Elements, a hazy with Strata, Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe as of this (Thursday) afternoon. Toltec has also tapped their Raspberry Sour as of Friday.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
