The Week Ahead in Beer: Halloween takes center stage, as expected

Going forward, Franz Solo, left, and Stoutmeister will alternate writing this here weekly feature.

There is a certain holiday this weekend that has all the breweries sticking to a theme. Shocking, huh?

New Draft: After last week’s barrage, things are a bit quieter this time. Canteen tapped Munich Dunkel and Grundy Thunder Porter. Casa Vieja rolled out the aptly-named Spooky Vanilla Stout. Ex Novo expects to tap Mind Mischief, a cold IPA, by this weekend. High and Dry gets in the spirit with SkeleTons of Fun Stout. Marble added two beers late last week with Grow Jet Skis, a smoked lager, and Finke’s Famous Froth, an IPL. Nexus takes flight with the USS Vienna Amber Lager. ReSource added a small batch of Bobbing for Amber Apples. Sidetrack has a fresh batch of A Tribe Called Kolsch. Steel Bender rolls out Bulldog Best Bitter on Thursday.

Up in Santa Fe, Hidden Mountain released Brewmaster P’s American Wheat. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row tapped Tusk and Bone Hazy IPA, Munich Dunkel Lager, and Canyon Rim Rye. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing introduces La Catrina Black Lager.

New Cans: Bow and Arrow drops a double release this Friday with Proper Pumpkin Beer, an imperial stout, and Moody Hues Hazy IPA. Boxing Bear brings back hoppy favorite Bear Knuckle IPA, a three-time winner of the New Mexico IPA Challenge, this Saturday. Ex Novo should have Intergalactic Pale Reality, which won a silver medal for its sister brewery in Portland at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival, in cans and on tap by this weekend.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street will release longtime fan favorite Cream Stout in cans for the first time this Thursday.

Events: As we noted in our big preview, today (Wednesday) is New Mexico Pint Day at 17 participating breweries statewide. Then, this Saturday features the return of the Beer Premier, now at Nexus Blue Smokehouse.

There are a ton of Halloween-themed events all around the state this week, and we will provide more details on all of them in a separate preview Thursday. We can note that the Pumpkins and Pints event is back at all Boxing Bear locations save Firestone on Thursday. ReSource is holding an all-week costume contest, and all you have to do is come to the brewery and take a picture of yourself for $1 off a pint, and be entered to win some brewery swag. Lizard Tail Industrial will hold a costume contest on Friday night. Halloween Goth Night returns to Tractor Nob Hill, also on Friday night.

Saturday is the big day for parties. Brew Lab 101 will have live DJs and a costume contest. Kaktus teams up with the Desert Darlings for a Halloween Belly Dance Party. Marble will host a Fright Night DJ Battle Dance Party on the patio downtown. Thirsty Eye will be part of a Halloween Bar Crawl, with all-day happy hour prices. A Very Synyster Vail Halloween returns to Tractor Wells Park.

Outside the metro area, Sierra Blanca is hosting a halloween party on Saturday afternoon. Later that night, Tumbleroot will have Tech or Treat. Down south, Little Toad Creek will host a halloween party with The Gila Lobsters at the Silver City taproom.

As always, if we have missed any beers or live events, please email us at nmdarksidebrewcrew@gmail.com.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
