Beer Notes: Pint Glass day is nearly here and more brewers are on the move

Here, fishy fishy! (Photo courtesy of Boxing Bear via the New Mexico Brewers Guild)

Just a few rapid-fire items from the old beer notebook for this week.

We kick off with the New Mexico Brewers Guild’s third Pint Glass Day, this time featuring a design with the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout. The glasses will be released at multiple breweries statewide this Wednesday.

Second Street’s creative director, Mariah Cameron Scee, is the artist again for this third run. She previously designed the Coelophysis (the NM state fossil) skeleton glass and the Smokey the Bear glass. This will be her final entry before another artist gets their chance, so if you purchase a trout glass and fill it with beer, raise it high in thanks to Mariah.

In the northern reaches of the state, you can find the glasses for sale at Lauter Haus Brewing and Three Rivers Brewery in Farmington, Bathtub Row Brewing in Los Alamos, and the trio of Rowley Farmhouse Ales, Santa Fe Brewing, and of course Second Street Brewery in Santa Fe.

In the southern realms, you can find the glasses at Icebox Brewing in Las Cruces, Milton’s Brewing in Carlsbad, and at Truth or Consequences Brewing.

As for the Albuquerque metro area, here’s the full list of participating breweries:

  • Boxing Bear Brewing
  • Canteen Brewhouse
  • Ex Novo Brewing
  • JUNO
  • Nexus Brewery
  • Palmer Brewing
  • Quarter Celtic Brewpub
  • Rio Bravo Brewing
  • Sidetrack Brewing
  • Steel Bender Brewyard
  • Tractor Brewing
  • Turtle Mountain Brewing

For those with multiple locations, the glasses should be available at all, but you might want to double check with some of the offsite taprooms just in case.

Two more brewers shuffle about

The last couple weeks have brought news of a pair of New Mexico brewers moving about within the state. We are planning to follow up with both of them, but for now here’s the basic info.

Mike Donovan, who held the title of head brewer at Rowley Farmhouse Ales from September 2020 until the spring of 2022, has taken the head brewer position at Bow & Arrow Brewing. Donovan is already hard at work keeping the beer flowing down at McKnight and Sixth Street. He had stepped away from the industry for about a year to help consult on a friend’s non-brewery project, but ultimately made the decision to return.

Donovan’s successor at RFA, Jennifer Treu, has also moved on, but only a few miles across town. She will be taking the reins at the Nuckolls Brewing, which is (finally) opening on July 19 at the Santa Fe Railyard. Luke will be catching up with her and previewing the new brewery as soon as he catches up on everything else after just getting back from vacation.

(So, for the record, something big will happen next month when I go on vacation. Bank on it.)

As for RFA, fear not, a new head brewer has been lined up and will be named soon.

Any other brewers on the move? Let us know!

A brewery awards … shutout?

The U.S. Open Beer Championship announced its 2023 winners on Monday and there was nary a New Mexico brewery listed.

Yeah, we were surprised. Now, it is always possible that no breweries from our state submitted a beer. Or, maybe it was a shutout. We reached out to the organizers for comment and will update this if we hear back.

That’s all from us for now. If you have some beer news that you would like to share from any corner of New Mexico, DM us on social media or email us at nmdarksidebrewcrew@gmail.com.

Keep supporting local!
