The Week Ahead in Beer: Kaktus hosts 2-night fundraiser for Maui

Stoutmeister will have you covered for all things new in beer and brewery events every week.

The good folks at Kaktus Brewing are hosting a two-night fundraiser to help the people of Lahaina, Maui, which was recently devastated by a wildfire. It kicks off both nights at 6 p.m. There will be live music Friday from 4sale and dance performances by Ka La Kapu Polynesian Dance School. Ka La Kapu will return Saturday along with Hula Mai Kalani. There will be a $10 suggested donation. The cover charge and all food and drink proceeds will be donated to Maui charities.

New Draft:

Bosque recently tapped No Land Beyond, a dark Mexican lager, and Huell & Oats, a hazy pale ale. Ex Novo brought back She Sells Seashelles. High and Dry added four new brews in Daydream Disaster (Amber), Square Root Beer (Stout), Mustache Liberation (Lemon Lime Wheat), and Matcho Man (Green Tea Wheat). Nexus tapped Festbier. Quarter Celtic added Strawberry Lemonade Kettle Sour. Steel Bender will tap Guardians’ Guide to the Galaxy, an IPL, on Thursday. Tractor will add Traktoberfest on Friday. Unhinged recently tapped Hazy Hijinx IPA. (UPDATE) Boxing Bear tapped Citra Kolsch.

New Package:

Bow & Arrow released Sunbloom, a saison, in cans and on draft. Gravity Bound put its classic hazy IPA, Quick Take, back in cans and on draft. Marble will have Marblefest available in cans and on draft in time for Saturday’s big event. (UPDATES) Bow & Arrow also released Midnight with a Chance of Coyotes, a peanut butter imperial stout, in cans and on draft. Second Street brought back its award-winning Oktoberfest in cans and on draft.

Notable Events:

Thursday — Bosque is hosting Beyonce Night, with music, themed cocktails, and more at the Nob Hill taproom starting at 7 p.m.

Friday — Explora’s annual Science of Beer night is back from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets are available online. Join Southwest Grape and Grain, the Dukes of Ale, Antonio Fernandez from CNM, and the brewers from Marble to learn all about how beer is made. Enjoy beers from Bosque, Boxing Bear, Canteen, Harmon Lane, Marble, and Steel Bender. There will also be live music, food specials, and more.

Saturday — Tracks, Tunes & Taps is a special event at Tractor Wells Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as the 2926 steam locomotive will roll on over to the brewery. We will have more on this story later in the week.

The Mountain West Brew Fest is back at Loretto Park in Bernalillo this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are available online. Participating breweries include Bosque, Downshift, Enchanted Circle, Ex Novo, Kaktus, Late Shift, Palmer, and The 377.

Marblefest is back at the downtown brewery from noon to 10 p.m., and of course we will also have a full preview later this week.

Boxing Bear is hosting a special event for National Dog Day at the Corrales taproom from noon to 8 p.m. There will be dogs available for adoption from Cross My Paws Animal Rescue (noon to 3), $1 from every pint sold will go to the charity (also noon to 3), a free photobooth (2 to 5), and live music from Lani Nash from 6 to 8.

Burque Live’s Second Street Block Party will be held outside Sidetrack from 5 to 10 p.m. There will be live music, local vendors, food trucks, and art installations.

The final round of the songwriter contest will be held at High and Dry starting at 6 p.m.

Sunday — There will be a special celebration of life for Mike Thrall at Canteen from 1 to 4 p.m. The taproom will be closed, while the brewery will only serve drinks, no food.

Thirsty Eye provided this bit of good news: “Citrus Buzz takes silver at the 2023 National Honey Board Beer Competition in the wheat beer category!”

JUNO provided us with a quick update on the forthcoming Edgewood taproom. Interior construction is mostly finished, and the patio is being built now. They are aiming for a soft opening in the early fall.

We got a tip that Travel Bug, a bookstore and cafe in Santa Fe, now has their small brewhouse up and running and at least one of their own beers on tap. We’ll have a full story soon.
