Trio of New Mexico breweries combine for 6 medals at western beer competition

Quarter Celtic is among the breweries that will need to make more room on their medal display wall.

It was a bountiful day for three local breweries at the North American Beer Awards last weekend.

Yeah, we probably should have written about this a lot sooner, but with age comes forgetfulness. Anyway, thanks to those who sent reminders and were patient.

Without further ado, here are the six medals, two apiece, won by the trifecta of Albuquerque breweries.

  • Vienna-style Lager — Gold: Vienna Lager, Ponderosa; Silver: Vienna Fest Bier, Quarter Celtic
  • Strong Bitter ESB — Bronze: Rip Saw Red, Ponderosa
  • Scotch Ale (Wee Heavy) — Bronze: Scotch Ale, Nexus
  • English-style Old Ale and English-style Barley Wine — Gold: Beam Me Up (Higher) Scotty, Nexus
  • Strong Beers — Silver: Super Stoop, Quarter Celtic

It has been a good year so far for Nexus, which previously won silver at the World Beer Cup for Beam Me Up (Higher) Scotty. It’s also nice to see a year-round beer like Scotch Ale snag a medal.

We wrote recently about the success that Quarter Celtic has been having over the last 12 months when it comes to racking up the awards. Super Stoop is on tap right now, and Vienna Fest Bier will be available again very soon, they told us.

It’s definitely nice to see Ponderosa back among the medal winners. It marks their first awards since Italian Pilsner won back-to-back golds at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival and 2022 WBC. Rip Saw Red is on tap year round, so you can enjoy that now.

Congratulations to all the winners. Here’s to more medals for New Mexico throughout the remainder of 2024.

Keep supporting local!
