The Week Ahead in Beer: Helping the less fortunate one pint at a time

Stoutmeister will have you covered for all things new in beer and brewery events every week.

Last Friday, Steel Bender, the New Mexico Brewers Guild, and KKOB teamed up to do a radiothon to benefit Roadrunner Food Bank. It turns one day was not nearly enough, so they will all be back at Steel Bender this Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. T.J. Trout and friends will be broadcasting live from inside the taproom. Any customer who brings in food to donate to Roadrunner, or makes a monetary donation via a QR code that will be at every table in the taproom, will get $1 off their pints and/or packaged beer. Other participating breweries will include Bosque (Heights and Nob HIll taprooms only), Canteen, Quarter Celtic, Rio Bravo, and Sidetrack. If you are a little too busy to make it out Wednesday afternoon, head to the website to make a donation. Let’s support local in more ways than one this holiday season!

Oh, and we will have a separate feature Wednesday detailing the hours of operation for breweries for Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

New Draft:

Bombs Away tapped All Clear! Pear Beer. Brew Lab 101 added Merry Cranberry Cider for the holiday season. Marble brought back old favorite Dupy’s Dunkel, named for the man, the myth, the legend that is brewer Greg Dupy. Thirsty Eye resurrected a holiday favorite in Biscochito Liquido. (UPDATES) Bosque and Sawmill Market collaborated on the new Panic at the Bisco, a red chile biscochito ale, that will debut Friday. Rio Bravo tapped a new Maple Brown Ale. Turtle Mountain dropped a double release of Elevenses, a New Zealand lager, and Doppel Effect, a doppelbock.

Up in Santa Fe, Second Street tapped a new batch of British Mild. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row added Hefeweizen and Belma Pale Ale. (UPDATE) Beer Creek tapped Drinkin’ and Dreamin’, a golden coffee stout.

New Package:

Ex Novo brought back two old favorites with Eliot IPA and Ruminator Doppelbock in cans and on draft. (UPDATES) Boxing Bear released one that we should have figured was coming, and that one is the awesome Vantablack Russian Imperial Stout, now available in cans and on draft. Downshift rolled out Festivus, a cinnamon vanilla porter, for the rest of us in cans and on draft. Second Street released Sloppy Sloth Sabro Hazy IPA in cans and on draft.

Notable Events:

Wednesday — The aforementioned KKOB Radiothon is at Steel Bender from 3 to 6 p.m.

Kaktus is hosting Friendsgiving from 6 to 9 p.m., serving up free pizza and encouraging guests to bring additional dishes to share, potluck-style. The Kaktus Jazz Jam will provide the musical entertainment.

Friday — The Black Friday Maker’s Market takes over Bosque Nob Hill from noon to 4 p.m.

Rowley Farmhouse Ales will once again host Blackest Friday all day, featuring imperial stouts from all over the country. Now we just need to which ones are going to be available. We need to know, John. WE. NEEDS. THE. LIST.

Saturday — Boxing Bear Firestone will host the Small Business Saturday Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Want to get some holiday pictures taken with your four-legged friends? The Furry Family Photoshoot is free at Sidetrack starting at 2 p.m.

Sunday — The Holiday Sip & Shop Market takes over Bosque North from 1 to 5 p.m.

The First Sunday Holiday Market returns to Tumbleroot Agua Fria from 2 to 6 p.m.

Quick News Bits:

Quarter Celtic’s Vienna Lager (returning soon) won another gold medal, this time at the European Beer Star competition. It previously won at the Great American Beer Festival in October. Congrats, again, to the QC brewing team!

Nexus Brewery is back open seven days a week, with hours from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. every day.

Canteen has a Wednesday deal of $2 off six-packs and $10 off cases of beer.

Preorders for the Kill the Sun gift box at Ex Novo start on Friday. Pickup will be on December 13.

Marble Brewery posted on social media that they have found a local buyer and will not be closing. Hopefully more information will be posted soon, as we have no idea who bought the entire operation. But, hey, at least the second-largest brewery in New Mexico is no longer shutting down, as the rumors claimed last month.

Just in case you missed it, we had big news recently both on how Gravity Bound and Boese Brothers will be sharing the brewing space at Sixth and Gold, while GB will now take over the taproom portion with a unique twist. We also learned how Icebox is in the process of taking over Public House 28 Brewery down between Las Cruces and Anthony. And, finally, we got the full details of the decision to permanently close the doors at Lizard Tail.

In much better news, Dripline Brewery is now open at Second Street and Summer Ave. They had a minor setback that meant their own beers aren’t ready yet, but we will add an entry for them below when those first brews are available.

Another new brewery? It appears so, but not in a place that has any others nearby. Prod-O Brewery and Distillery has an active small brewer license, and is located in the town of Reserve in Western New Mexico. Recent photos posted to Facebook show that it is open. Guess we’ve got a road trip coming up!

Steel Bender is teaming up with a local radio station, The Peak, for Monday Night Football games all season. There will be drink and food specials, and one of the hosts of the station will be there every game from 6 p.m. until halftime. Check their social media for more details.
