Oh, Monday, you most dreaded day of the week for those folks who still work the traditional 9-5, M-F job. For those of us who don’t, and we are many, this is just another ordinary day. Well, it’s the day “The Following” season finale airs, so I guess it’s not that ordinary. It’s also 50-cent hot dog night at the Isotopes game, for those who love baseball and don’t have to visit the doctor for a cholesterol checkup anytime soon.
But I digress, this is a post about Day 5 of ABQ Beer Week. It is a light schedule tonight, featuring two beer-and-food pairings, plus two special beer tastings. Things will pick up again in the days ahead.
One bummer of a note, we have had our first event cancellation. Tuesday’s Belgium vs. New Belgium dinner at Nob Hill Bar & Grill has been nixed due to a food cooler malfunction.
Anyway, onto better news with today’s events.
What: Beer & Cheese Pairings. Where: Marble downtown pub. When: 4 to 7 p.m. Cost: $15, reservations require. Details: This popular annual event returns. A total of five beers and cheeses will be paired up — Double White with Thomas Hoe Red Leicester, Triple with Sottocenere al tartufo, Framboise with Cremont, Stout with Sini Fulvi Pecorino Romano, and the 505 2013 with Borough Market Stilton. Why you should go: Unless you’re lactose intolerant, who doesn’t like cheese? I mean, it’s right up there with bacon. Mmm, bacon. Uh, anyway, pairing up cheese and beer sounds like a brilliant idea, right? So if you’re not baseball-bound, head on over. As of this morning there are 20 spots left.
What: Free food item with beer purchase. Where: Sandia Chile Grill, in the shopping center on the northeast corner of San Antonio and Wyoming. When: 4 to 8 p.m. Cost: $4 (the price of a pint). Details: The SCG guys are offering up a free Frito Pie to anyone who buys a pint of beer this afternoon/evening. Yup, free food with your beer. It’s hard to beat. There are five beers on tap — pilsner, imperial Irish red, IPA, nitro milk stout, and hefeweisen. I highly recommend the red, but in truth, they’re all excellent.
What: Special Beer Tapping. Where: Two Fools. When: 5 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: Odell’s Treeshaker Imperial Peach IPA is the featured beer of the evening. There may even be an Odell Brewing rep or two on hand to talk about this rather unique-sounding beer. Why you should go: Taste beer, talk about beer, eat fish & chips. Pretty good way to kick any Monday blues for those of you traditional work schedule types.
What: Special Beer Tasting. Where: O’Niell’s Nob Hill. When: 5 to 7 p.m. Cost: No cover charge. Details: In lieu of a beer dinner, O’Niell’s is just inviting everyone over to try some tasty Deschutes beers. They will have kegs for sale of Black Butte Porter, Red Chair and Chainbreaker, plus you can sample all three of those beers as well as the River Ale. Why you should go: Deschutes is an awesome brewery, one of our favorites, so head over and enjoy. Plus, you can still eat off O’Niell’s regular menu. Don’t drink on an empty stomach, bad things happen. Keep an eye out for Derek at this event, he’ll be there repping the Brew Crew.
What: Five Star Burgers Sliders & Suds Pairing Event. Where: Five Star Burgers, located in the shopping center on the northwest corner of Academy and Wyoming, near Whole Foods. When: 6 to 9 p.m. Cost: $20. Details: Head on up to the Northeast Heights for this food-beer combo event. Take note, all the pairings are just suggestions, you can mix them up however you want. Get a burger slider and pair it up with a 5-ounce beer sample. The beers are La Cumbre’s Elevated IPA, Marble Oatmeal Stout, Monk’s Wit, and Marble Wheat. You get a full pint of your favorite beer in addition to the samples. Why you should go: As the name implies, Five Star makes some tasty burgers, and it is awesome to see them pair up with all in-state beers. For those of us stuck eating at the ballpark tonight, we will be jealous.
That’s all for Monday, there will be a longer list of events Tuesday. Don’t forget, the New Belgium Lips of Faith pairings with Geckos’ Tapas dishes is still going on, ditto the Hot Sunner Nights at Desert Fish. Derek’s review of the Geckos event will be up later today.
