The Week Ahead in Beer: Feeling Super with lots of local brews

Posted: February 1, 2017 by cjax33 in The Week Ahead in Beer

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Socorro, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Social media has been rife with strife since a certain someone took office, but this weekend provides one of our great annual escapes from reality. Yeah, the one time a year where we actually watch the commercials, and root against the true Evil Empire. Since the Falcons probably don’t have much of a chance, load up on as many local brews as you can. A few breweries will close early Sunday. Those who have reported altered hours are: La Cumbre, closing at 6 p.m.; Sidetrack, closing at 4 p.m.; Turtle Mountain, closing at 4 p.m. Palmer said it will close whenever the crowd thins out. If any other breweries announce an early closing time, we will be sure to update this story and update all of you on social media. Other breweries are embracing the game and having it on TV, so please, if you go, be on your best behavior first and foremost, and then be extra careful getting home (Uber/Lyft/taxis are your friends!) on a night where too many folks go overboard.

The Crew will be having our annual Stout Challenge. It will be the sixth year where we pit stouts from area breweries head to head in a blind taste test. We will have a preview of what we’re drinking Friday, but we expect a big lineup (up to 16 stouts!), and if history is any indication, we will have our sixth champion in six years.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few new options to check out. Boese Brothers will introduce their oak-aged Russian imperial stout, Comrade Boese, on Saturday, along with bombers of Dr. Strangehop. Wayward Arrow Hefeweizen is back at Bow & Arrow, joining the new Radical Aim IPA. Boxing Bear has been going so big lately, they decided to take it easy on all of you with another round of Featherweight Session IPA. Exodus IPA is back on tap at Canteen after a short absence. La Cumbre has a new Munchner Dunkel and a Centennial SMASH. Palmer was feeling witty with Palmergranite Wit, plus Cafe Pale Ale will wake you up. Starr Brothers rolls out fresh batches of Don’t Fear the RIPA, Roisin Dubh Irish Dry Stout, and they have an Anniversary Stout.

Up in Santa Fe, Blue Corn has a new Hoppy Red Lager and a Dry-hopped Imperial Stout. Rowley Farmhouse Ales rolls out fresh batches of Greyscale, Fields of Rye, and Josephus. Second Street unveils Zig Zag Pale Ale alongside Cereza Negra, Brown Ale, and Rod’s Best Bitter. Over in Moriarty, Sierra Blanca has more Whiskey Stout available, plus Cherry Sour returns. Down in Socorro, Raspberry Wheat returns to Twisted Chile.

Oh, and we have the full list for Ale Republic at last! See below.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of January 30.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week.
