Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.
Every year, it seems, some publication or just incredibly vocal person on social media screams out that the IPA craze is over, that hops are dead, and people are moving on to whatever is newer and trendier and being made in far-off places like Oregon or Vermont. Every year, New Mexicans just shrug off these claims and keep buying hop-forward beers in truly ridiculous quantities. Thus, our breweries are forced to keep making those ludicrous hop bombs, like Father Nelson, which returns this Friday on tap and in bombers at La Cumbre. If history is any indicator, the supply may run out before the weekend ends. For the few of you new to our state or who somehow have yet to work up the courage to try Father Nelson, may we present this delightfully devilish description from La Cumbre: “Father Nelson: Irresponsible, offensive, repugnant, blasphemous and downright creepy. This is Father Nelson. Father Nelson is a very bad beer. Reaching to the outer expanses of what is possible with hops and alcohol we have created a beer that is literally dripping in hop oils. Don’t be surprised if you see a slick floating in your glass, and not to worry, just hops. Nelson Sauvin gets the starring role in yet another, ridiculously delicious hopgasm from your friends at La Cumbre Brewing Co.” Yeah, that about sums it up. Get over there and clear those sinuses this Friday!
On the new beer front this week, there are a few additional options to check out. Ale Republic brings back Strong Dark and Handsome, while Lone Wolf also joins the tap list. Boese Brothers is feeling presidential with Washington’s Hatchet. Bosque adds Idaho Gold and Rolled to Prost to the lineup. Canteen has a fresh batch of Marzen and the new Piedra (Imperial) Red. Dialogue is feeling downright Soulless, a tart ginger beer. Kaktus brings back Wheat and Irish Red. Kellys, which finally joins the lineup here, has a Rye Pale Ale on as its current seasonal. Marble is feeling tart with Blackberry Gose, smoky with Bacon’s Best Friend, shiny with Crystal Pale Ale, and apocalyptic with 7 Horsemen. Tractor harvested some fresh New Mexican Lager, Delicious Golden Dry Cider, and Holstein & Hops Pale Ale.
Up in Santa Fe, Second Street rolls out some more Amber Ale, plus the new 2920 Coffee Porter.
Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of April 3.
