Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
Though many of the brewery employees, and one beer writer, will be in Denver this weekend for the Great American Beer Festival, there is still plenty for everyone in the Albuquerque area. Friday night will feature the monthly First Friday Albuquerque Art Walk downtown, with several breweries and taprooms joining in on the fun. There is also the ABQ Trolley’s Balloon Fiesta Pub Crawl, which kicks off at the Albuquerque Tourism & Sightseeing Factory (201 Third Street NW) at 6:30 p.m. The trip costs $25 (or $23 if you buy in advance online), and will take you to breweries downtown and in the Wells Park neighborhood, with the trolley making continuous loops every 30-to-45 minutes. The full list includes the Red Door Downtown Taproom, Sidetrack Brewing, Boese Brothers Brewery, Marble Brewery, Rio Bravo Brewing, Hollow Spirits Distillery, Blue Grasshopper, and Tractor Wells Park. Other big events on Saturday include Dialogue’s Third Anniversary Party from 4 to 11 p.m. Local bands in attendance include Dust City Opera, Five Mile Float, Bellemah, and GRAL Brothers Music. There will be food trucks, an artisan fair, a kids zone, and more. Ponderosa has an Oktoberfest party starting at 5 p.m., with music from Corner House, a German food menu, special German brews, and a special tapping of Festbier on cask. Thirsty Eye is throwing its own Oktoberfest party from noon to 10 p.m., with music, food, art, and more. Finally, Tractor Wells Park will be the host site for the Fourth Annual New Mexico Distillers Guild Festival at 3 p.m. General admission is $13 and tickets are available online. Taste the best of what our state’s distilleries have to offer.
On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Ale Republic has fresh batches of Red Mountain IPA and Diablo de Oro, a Belgian golden strong. Boxing Bear stings like a bee with Featherweight Session IPA. Broken Trail releases the first beer from new head brewer David Rosebeary, B.S.B. (Burque Special Bitter), on Friday. Canteen contributes to the fight against breast cancer with Pink Warrior House Lager. Cantero taps its Marzen for the season. Casa Vieja has more Gold Medal Hefe, plus Dark Skies Stout on nitro and Not Afraid of the Dark Lager. Ex Novo has a slew of new brews including Mesita Belgian Table Beer, SMaSH Lager with Motueka, Sons of Scotland Scotch Ale, and Nitro Coffee Circus Brown. La Reforma brewed up some Mexican Chocolate Stout and Oktoberfest. Marble unveils its collaboration with High and Dry, La Vespa Gose. Ponderosa is tapping the aforementioned Festbier and an Altbier on Saturday. Quarter Celtic targets our tastebuds with Coffee Bean Bomb. Red Door has its three other anniversary beers — Red Creek DIPA, Illusions of Flannel IPL, Another Matt (California Common) — back on tap. Sidetrack rolled out Coco Marron, a coconut brown ale, and Blue Collar Pilsner. Starr Brothers added a new cranberry/cherry gose, Psycho A Go Go. Steel Bender has Ale Witch on tap and in cans this Thursday, along with bottles of Make Mine Perfect, a Belgian dubbel aged on local cherries.
