The Week Ahead in Beer: Always bet on Vanta Black this Friday

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

For a holiday week, there is a whole heck of a lot going on before and after Thanksgiving, but one event in particular has caught our attention. Boxing Bear is celebrating Vanta Black Friday with the return of its Russian imperial stout, which is usually enough to get us charging over, but then they went and made things even better. With that type of beer, you need metal, so we expected they would just play metal over the PA system or something of that sort. No, they went out and booked Red Mesa, Blue Heron, and Undying Evil to perform. Vanta Black has also been canned this year in 4-packs, plus there will be a limited supply of the barrel-aged 2018 version on tap and for sale in 22-ounce bottles. There’s also Scotch Rocket in 4-pack cans for the first time, plus wine-barrel-aged Chocolate Milk Stout, rye-barrel-aged Oso Otoño, Buffalo Trace barrel-aged Standing 8 Stout, and some additional treats in bottles and on tap. Vendors including High Desert Flame Works, 2 Gemini Crafts, Crystal’s Bling, Stones by Bri, and more will be on hand, along with Food for the Sol food truck from 4 to 9. There is also 20 percent off all merchandise and canned beers. Everything with the beer will run from noon to 11 p.m.

Like we said, though, there is a heck of a lot more going on in more than one town. Truth or Consequences has an insane number of beers being tapped and/or for sale in bottles, some brand new, others from the archives (see their entry below). Rowley Farmhouse Ales is throwing Blackest Friday once again, and the lineup is so insane they worked out a deal with a neighboring hotel for discounted rooms so that no one has to even think about driving home. Luke will have a full preview later today. On a smaller scale, Toltec will have a cask of the award-winning Shaman Stout with red chile and chocolate. High and Dry will be playing Black Sabbath albums all day and night. Ex Novo is having a sale, with all merchandise and packaged beer 20 percent off (at the brewery and online), plus you can preorder the new barrel-aged beer box set. Bow & Arrow is releasing a collaboration imperial stout, Darkest Cheer, made with our friend Majin Garcia. Steel Bender brings back Brickie American Stout on Saturday, on tap and in cans, plus it will have a limited number of a barrel-aged version in cans only. Finally, Sunday has been dubbed Small Brewery Sunday, and La Cumbre is marking the event with the start of a weeklong series of events to celebrate its ninth anniversary with tacos, micheladas, and loteria at the brewery.

Most breweries are keeping normal hours today (Wednesday) and Friday, while closing for the holiday Thursday. Some exceptions to that (we will update if necessary):

  • Black Snout is only open from 3 to 7 p.m. today, and then from 2 to 11 on Friday.
  • Blue Grasshopper’s Rio Rancho location will be open and serving Thanksgiving dinner.
  • Bosque Public House in Nob Hill will be open from noon to 8 p.m., but its kitchen will be closed.
  • Kaktus closes early at 6 p.m. today.
  • Red Door’s Candelaria location will feature $3 off all 64-ounce growler fills today (normal hours) and Thursday, when it will be open from noon to 4.
  • Blue Corn will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, and yes, dinner will be served.
  • Truth or Consequences will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and feature a potluck dinner.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bosque brings back its delicious Fresh Start, a maple coffee stout, on tap and in cans. Bow & Arrow added Sun Peaks Hoppy Pils and Tangerine Melt, plus the aforementioned Darkest Cheer arrives Friday. Boxing Bear also has Danke Shorts and Chin-hook Hazy on tap. Broken Trail goes big with El Funko, an imperial stout. Kaktus rolled out a new Hazy IPA, Imperial Stout, and Scotch Ale. La Cumbre kicks back with Business Hammock Hazy IPA and Dunkelweizen. La Reforma goes old-school with its new IPA, West Coast, Ese! Nexus has a limited amount of Charlotte’s Maple Bacon Porter on tap today at the brewery and the Silver Taproom. Ponderosa has tapped its Raspberry Wheat and the tasty S’mores Stout. Quarter Celtic brings back Kill or be Kilt Scotch Ale. Sidetrack hits the road with Oatbound Stout, plus Red IPA and Julius Hazy IPA are available. Starr Brothers goes the hybrid IPA route with Not Too Hazy Oh So Juicy, plus There Gose Them Boyzz is back for another run, and Black Friday Dark American Lager returns on, well, you can guess. Tractor rolled out Cranberry Ginger Cider for the season. Turtle Mountain tapped Rusticana Brown.

Up in Santa Fe, Blue Corn put more Oktoberfest on tap. Second Street kneels before St. George IPA and Rauchbier. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row brings back Patriot Porter and also adds Ladron’s Peak Elixir. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing also has Snuffy’s Double and Monticello Green Chile Amber available in addition to Friday’s big lineup.
