The Week Ahead in Beer: La Cumbre finds turning nine to be oh so fine

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

It’s hard to believe that La Cumbre has been around for nine years, but this week is the anniversary one of our most awarded breweries, with plenty on the docket. Thursday will feature the art of longtime LC mainstay Chris McAfee on display at the brewery. The man behind so many of the brewery’s can designs will showcase all of his talent at once from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday will feature the release of Origin, a new double hop, double hazy IPA, in cans and on tap at both locations starting at noon. The main party runs all day Saturday at the brewery, with the release of To The Nines in bottles. This Belgian-style dubbel was aged on cherries, and there is only a limited supply for sale. Screen Kings will be doing live shirt printing from 1 to 5 p.m., and the Julian Dossett Trio will provide music from 6:30 to 9:30. The weekend will be capped by a bowling tournament at Silva Lanes on Sunday from 1 to 3. There will be a slew of good LC beers on tap, and prizes for the winning teams.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bow & Arrow looks to Juicy Skies Hazy IPA on Friday. Brew Lab 101 gets thematic with Walter Wit. Cantero drums to the beat of a Wheatnik. Ex Novo gets caught Apricot Red Handed and once again finds Where the Mild Things Are. Ponderosa finally tapped its Altbier. Red Door hopes everyone decides to Don’t Fruit the Messenger starting this Friday. Tractor releases its latest charitable beer, Structure Fire Red Rye IPA.

Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales flips the channel to Agent Scully – Season Three, Episode One for its IPA. Second Street gazes at Low Winter Sun (sour), plus has Schwarzbier available. Tumbleroot tapped Grateful Red, an imperial, and Helles in Wonderland. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row is feeling patriotic with American Amber.
