Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

One of the fringe benefits of going around and doing interviews for our Look Back/Look Ahead Series is occasionally getting to try beers in advance of their release at various breweries. Such was the case Tuesday afternoon, when I got the chance to sample the new Lush & Aphotic, a Russian imperial stout, at Nexus Brewery. This 9-percent ABV beauty goes on tap today (Wednesday), but the best part about this stout is this is only the primary base variant. Head brewer Randy King said he and his assistants have additional oak-aged variants coming, and they also have three varieties of cacao nibs. Basically, expect some wonderful one-off versions of what is a great base stout, but one that is not so high in ABV that you are one-and-done whenever you stop by for some delicious food at the mothership location of Nexus. He promised to keep us up to date when the variants are tapped, and we in turn will pass that info along to all of you. Share the big stout love, right?

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bombs Away takes flight with Buzz Bomb Pale Ale. Bosque sees clearly with Visual Acuity DDH Hazy IPA. Bow & Arrow straightens out with Cactus Flats Hazy IPA. Brew Lab 101 shines with Sunburst Orange-Pomegranate Cider. Canteen hangs out at the Smashcade, a single-hop Cascade pale ale. Cantero has more of its potent Brew-Ha-Ristra, a red chile stout. La Cumbre has a new batch of Chew and Swallow Oatmeal Stout. Lava Rock rolls out Cut Throat Red Ale. Quarter Celtic brings back one of its original beers with a twist in Peat Smoked Quarter Porter. Red Door calls for a Mic Czech at its downtown and Clovis locations. Toltec introduces Mosaic Single-Hop Pale Ale.

Up in Santa Fe, Tumbleroot goes south with Tongue Tattoo, a New Zealand pale ale, and also spices things up with Molé Imperial Stout.

This 9-percent ABV stout is a wonderful beer on its own, but be on the lookout for some variants aged with oak and/or special cacao nibs. A Mexican lager is the next beer on deck.
