The Week Ahead in Beer: Celebrating Mardi Gras in New Mexico

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Since most of us out here don’t get over to New Orleans too often, folks might not be aware that Mardi Gras is raging in the Big Easy right now. At least three of our local breweries are gonna save you the plane ticket and celebrate the annual event here. Canteen kicks it off with a party on Saturday starting at 4 p.m. Le Chat Lunatique will provide the appropriate music. Then on Fat Tuesday itself, Toltec will throw a party with glitter-infused Lupulin IPA, beads, Cajun-style food, and more. That will run all day. Up in Santa Fe, Tumbleroot kicks off its party at 6 p.m. The Partizani Brass Band will provide the music, plus there will be gumbo, a cake walk, and even a costume contest with a $100 prize. All of these events are free to attend, so get on over there and avoid a long trip with a Hurricane hangover afterward.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bosque had fun brewing up Mr. Almond’s Opus and 808s & Shortcake. Canteen brings back two old favorites in Irish Red and Tuttle IPA. Casa Vieja added Duke’s Red Ale, Loma Lager, and Casa La Vista Doppelbock. Differential tapped Birra Prosecco for its anniversary party last weekend. Ex Novo has a new Czech pilsner, Migratory Patterns, now available in cans, and it will soon be on tap. La Cumbre rolls out Transformation Hazy DIPA in cans and on tap this Friday. Marble hops to it with Mosaic DIPA. Nexus should have its Raspberry Beret American Wheat back on tap by the weekend. Sidetrack recently added Overcast Hazy IPA and Stoutmonger. Steel Bender used local barley to make Amarillo SMASH, which arrives Thursday. Thirsty Eye tapped Biotranscendence DIPA and Rojo Fog, an amber, plus Deep Earth, a brown ale, arrives Friday. Toltec goes big again with Doopy Hoppy DIPA on Friday.

Up in Santa Fe, Chili Line has Raspberry Golden Ale, Dat New New Stout, and a new version of Sky Walker Haze with strawberry on tap. Tumbleroot introduces a new Japanese lager called East Root. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row recently added Rendija Red. Down south, Truth or Consequences will tap Dripping Springs Tropical Stout on Thursday.
