The Week Ahead in Beer: Show some extra support to the smallest breweries

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

We have entered a weird place where it seems like our breweries have been split in two. The governor has allowed breweries with 50 percent or more of their total sales coming from food, what we would call brewpubs, to reopen to 50-percent dine-in capacity, while food-less or food-limited breweries still cannot have anyone sit inside or on the their patios and enjoy a pint. Since many brewpubs do not have their own canning lines, the only package they have been selling is growlers and/or crowlers for the past 10 weeks. This is a major revenue boost for brewpubs. As for the other breweries, some have held their heads above water in large part due to having large numbers of four- and six-pack cans for sale, but those who have traditionally only had draft sales are perhaps in the greatest danger right now. While we normally do not say people should favor one brewery over another, please do not forget many of these small neighborhood pubs. You can go out and grab a bite and a brew at one of the open places, but consider stopping by a non-canning brewery for a growler or crowler and help them out. Examples of these include Bombs Away, Bow & Arrow, Brew Lab 101, Casa Vieja, Dialogue, High and Dry, Kilt Check, Palmer, Sidetrack, Thirsty Eye, and Turquoise Trail in the Albuquerque area. You are more than welcome to still get beer to-go from the bigger breweries, like La Cumbre and Marble and Ex Novo and more, but this week, consider the little guys.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few new options to check out. (UPDATE) Boxing Bear has Headlock Hazy IPA and Black and Blue Tart back in cans. Ex Novo will release Saul Fruitman, a fruited IPA, in cans at some point in the near future, but Coorales Light Lager is now available for crowler/growler fills. High and Dry takes on Artificial Responsibility, a New England-style IPA. La Cumbre stealthily released Sun Fade Hazy IPA in cans on Monday, and will add a limited number of Clarity Hazy DIPA cans on Friday. (UPDATE) Marble puckered up with Pink Lemonade Lager available for crowler/growler fills. (UPDATE) Ponderosa has Hop-Mosa Hazy IPA available in cans. Quarter Celtic brings back a fan favorite in Mangose on draft. Sidetrack drops a fresh batch of Buzz Bomb for crowler/growler fills, (UPDATE) plus Mosaic Montage Hazy Pale Ale was tapped for the weekend. (UPDATE) Starr Brothers and Palmer teamed up again for a fresh batch of 2 Robs Make a Rita, available at both for crowler/growler fills.

Up in Santa Fe, now that Rowley Farmhouse Ales is open for dine-in customers, they put Hail Stan and Saison du Sarlacc – Baby Yoda Edition back on draft, (UPDATE) plus Germophile – Mango/Pink Guava is now available in cans. Second Street tapped more of its House IPA for growler fills until the Rufina taproom reopens Thursday, plus today marks the release of Sloppy Sloth Zappa Hazy IPA in cans. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row celebrates birthday No. 5 with Anniversary Lager in special bottles.

Breweries, if there is anything not in here that you would like the public to know about, get in touch with us ASAP. We can continuously update this post as needed.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of June 1.
