Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
The ongoing rollout of more and more seasonal brews in cans has our beer fridges overflowing at this point, but no one is really complaining. One of the many releases this week is Oktoberfest in cans for the first time over at Canteen Brewhouse. That is not the only news from Albuquerque’s oldest brewery, however, as the staff has come up with a unique way to keep an autumn tradition alive. In the past, Canteen has hosted a Hatch green chile roast, with paying customers then enjoying a “peeling party” on the patio. This year, with social distancing rules in place, Canteen will still have the roast going, but customers can now come get their green and red simply by driving through. Everyone is required to order in advance, with the deadline later today (Wednesday). Email email@example.com to register. For $40, you get a bag of chile, a six-pack of beer of your choice, gloves, freezer bags, and a Sharpie. Drive-up times will be staggered in 15-minute increments on Saturday. Before that, head over Friday for those Oktoberfest cans and to try this year’s edition of Sichler Chile Lager, made with some of the same chile that will be roasted, on draft.
We also wanted to highlight the double-can release at Ex Novo on Friday. While Floor is Guava, a fruited sour, is another outstanding beer name from the folks in Corrales, we wanted to make sure everyone knew about Screwball Breaks Left. This imperial stout was brewed in collaboration with our longtime friend, Majin Garcia, and was then left to age in Woodford Reserve barrels for more than a year (it was originally going to be tapped for ABQ Beer Week). The stout was made with copious amounts of peanut butter and marshmallow. It is an exclusive release, checking in at $12 per can, but knowing Majin and Ex Novo’s Dave Chichura, it will be more than worth it.
On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Boese Brothers will be tapping their Oktoberfest at all locations this week. Bombs Away also added Wet Hop Harvest ale to its draft menu late last week. Bosque has a new mixed six-pack of its three entries into the Great American Beer Festival competition (which is still happening, though the main festival is not), and Scale Tipper IPA, Resto Hazy Pale Ale, and Pickle Down Economics are also on draft for a limited time at all locations save for the Las Cruces Public House. Casa Vieja rolls out some new brews and old favorites on draft including The Duke’s Red Ale, Loma Lager, Mon Cherry Cherry Wheat, and Summer Vanilla Stout. (UPDATE) Harmon Lane will be releasing cans of Chocolate Coffee Stout on Friday. High and Dry has more True Horizon Red Ale on draft. La Cumbre has a big can release of its own on Friday with Wet Hopped Project Dank arriving in force. Marble likewise drops a new six-pack as Marblefest will be canned for the first time. Red Door has a double-can release of its own for Saturday’s sixth anniversary party (which we will cover soon in a separate story) as both Full of Helles and Prost Malone Oktoberfest will arrive at the taprooms. Rio Bravo tapped a trio of new brews with Cherry Limeade Gose, Simple Dry Hopped Sour, and Fugazi Hazy IPA. Sidetrack rolls out the aptly named Downtown Lager on draft. Steel Bender brings back a fall favorite with Blackberry Dynamite on tap and in cans on Thursday, (UPDATE) plus Skull Fuzz IPA, their NM IPA Challenge entry, will be tapped the same day. Thirsty Eye gets tough with Bruiser the American Pitbull Stout tapped on Friday.
Up in Santa Fe, Beer Creek kicks it up a notch with Right Foot Milk Stout on tap. Rowley Farmhouse Ales has a bevy of archived brews available, including Grandissant – Gin Barrel and Grandissant – 4X Cerise on draft, plus bottles of Cote d’Or – Cerise Redux 2019, Germophile – Petit Verdot, Agent Orange – Apple Brandy, and Oud Alchemy – Jefferson’s Bourbon Barrel. Second Street has cans of Oktoberforest now out in distribution. Bathtub Row has released Ancones Fresh Hop IPA on draft.
