The Week Ahead in Beer: The first bounty of the foeder is ready at Bow & Arrow

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Back in July 2019, we stopped at Bow & Arrow to take a gander at their new foeder. In the before times when you could sit inside the brewery, you might have noticed the massive, wooden structure on the other side of the glass separating the brewery from the taproom. Well, after having been put to use, the first foeder beer is now ready for release this Saturday. Curio, a farmhouse ale made with regionally sourced hops and barley, will be released in 375ml bottles. It was fermented for 14 months in the foeder with a mix of wild and house yeast, including some yeast from a peach tree and a lavender field. The result, per the release on Facebook, “is big notes of apricot skin, peach and pineapple, with fruity funk, balanced acidity and bitterness, finishing with prickly carbonation.” At 7-percent ABV, this one should not wipe you out after a bottle or two. We know our friends up at Rowley Farmhouse Ales have been making use of their foeders for some time, but it is nice to see one of the Albuquerque breweries joining in the fun. This very unique beer should be a welcome addition to any lineup. Raise a bottle to head brewer Ted O’Hanlan and his team, because this beer is truly a (14-month-long) labor of love.

On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Bosque has tapped its Oktoberfest at all locations in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Santa Fe. Boxing Bear added cans of Oso Otoño and Big Mofo Hazy DIPA last weekend. Dialogue has more Ctzn Hero Pilsner on draft. Ex Novo put Krispy’s Kolsch back on draft in advance of Saturday’s double-can release of Unstuck in Time (hazy IPA) and Pastel Polo (key lime sour with lactose). High and Dry has started to expand its tap list, with old favorites like Humble Affair Coffee Stout and Freedom Cage IPA joining the lineup, along with The Tuesdays Pale Ale. La Reforma keeps its revolving series of IPAs going with West Coast, Primo! joining the tap list. Marble goes old-school with some Nugget IPA on draft. Nexus did indeed tap its Fest Bier on Tuesday. Sidetrack added Tenacious IPA and Dark Daze Stout, with the latter also on cask. Steel Bender is not lounging about with Couch Potato IPA on tap this Thursday.

Up in Santa Fe, it’s all quiet this week, but down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing is tapping its Monticello Green Chile Amber on Thursday.

(WEEKEND UPDATES) As per usual, a bevy of additional beers rolled out on tap after we published this article on Wednesday. Ale Republic is getting ready for cooler temps in the East Mountains with Sweater Weather Belgian Strong. Bombs Away keeps it simple with Just an Amber. Canteen brought back Hustle and Glow DIPA, plus a new version of Social Capital Kettle Sour is available, this time made with peach, plum, and cardamom. Harmon Lane has Amber back on draft and in four-pack cans. Marble has Cashmarillo, a wheat ale made with Cashmere and Amarillo hops, on tap at all three locations. Sidetrack added vanilla beans and coffee from Zendo next door to its Dark Daze Stout to create Javanilla. Sobremesa has tapped its first seasonal, Pino Trail Pale Ale.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Darkside, I wanted to give you guys a heads up that Closed Loop is working with Earthly Labs, LANL, Bosque Brewing, SIerra Blanca Brewing, and Bathtub Row brewing on a NMSBA grant to research Co2 quality in beer. We will be announcing next week via press release that New Mexicans will have an opportunity to participate in the study. Each brewery will be carbonating half a batch with recovered Co2 and the other half with their commercial Co2. They will package the beer so that nobody but the brewery knows which beer is which. Each brewery has a different strategy for marking the beers but there will be a survey available on Survey monkey that we will use to gather data. If you are interested in making a post on this event I will have our media consultant get you the press release as soon as it’s ready.

    Cheers!
