The Week Ahead in Beer: Rio Bravo concludes Oktoberfest season with a feast

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

Technically, in non-pandemic years, Oktoberfest ends in Germany during the first weekend of October. Over here in America, from the time those ubiquitous orange-labeled Samuel Adams bottles show up at stores in July, Oktoberfest is much longer event in the U.S., at least when it comes to the beers inspired by the Bavarian festival. Well, it is about time for that transition (come on, weather, we are just waiting on you) from the marzens and festbiers to the stouts and porters of winter, and it is Rio Bravo Brewing that will send out the German theme in style this weekend. In addition to having their own Oktoberfest lager in cans and on tap now, RBB is also going with five special German-style food items on the menu this Saturday and Sunday. Grab some apple strudel, a giant pretzel with cheese, German potato soup, bratwurst or knackwurst, or pork schnitzel. Go ahead, one last feast for the fall that still feels like summer, and before we know it, the big barrels will be tapped, and the Crew will dance in our pagan rituals as the big stouts and porters fill our drinking horns, and the metal shall ring long into the night. Pandemic permitting, of course.

Speaking of the pandemic, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has altered the public health order again as cases of COVID-19 rise sharply. All breweries (and restaurants that serve alcohol) must now close at 10 p.m. Keep your eyes on the individual brewery social media feeds as they adjust their schedules. Some, like Quarter Celtic and Canteen, kept their closing times well before 10, but others had pushed back to 11 or even midnight on the weekends. We will update everything below, where needed, with the new 10 p.m. closing. Otherwise, nothing else has changed for the breweries in terms of indoor or outdoor occupancy, but pay attention to the governor’s Facebook page for her Thursday broadcast, just in case she decides to add (or re-add) more restrictions to get cases, hopefully, back under control.

On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Bow & Arrow will release Cactus Flats Double-Dry-Hopped Hazy IPA in cans and on draft this Thursday. Brew Lab 101 brings back the popular Blue Nebula Blueberry Cider. Dialogue has a new English-style stout, The Local, on draft. High and Dry tapped fresh batches of Rye Orbison and Hurry Sundown, with this version made with orange and mango added. Kaktus brought back Blonde Ale on draft. La Cumbre will release Omnipotent Octopus Hazy DIPA in cans this Friday, but if you want to stop by sooner, there are three old favorites back on tap with Berliner Weisse, Chew and Swallow Oatmeal Stout (on nitro), and Witches Tit Pumpkin Ale. Lava Rock rolls out Stonehaven Scottish Ale and Pinché Cerveza. Nexus, as we reported, will release four-pack cans of Scotch Ale, Honey Chamomile Wheat, Imperial Cream Ale, and Black is Beautiful Imperial Stout today (Wednesday). Starr Brothers gets in the season with its pumpkin spice ale, Jack Tooth Grin. Tractor will release Apricot Wheat on draft at all locations this Friday.

Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales has moved on to Agent Scully – Season 4, Episode 1 of its rotating IPA series on draft. Second Street recently tapped Brown Ale and Vienna Country Lager, plus (UPDATE) 16-ounce cans of Kolsch will make their debut this weekend. Further north, Red River Brewing unveiled Sunshine Rye IPA, Tucker Brau Marzen, and “Have you seen my phone?” Dunkel (yes, that is the name, we are not joking). Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing brings back High Impact IPA on tap at both locations.

(WEEKEND UPDATE) Bosque is feeling blue with The Deep Water, a blue glitter kettle sour (no, really), on tap. Boxing Bear brings back an old favorite in Red Knuckle Irish Red on draft. Canteen rolls out a blackberry version of Social Capital Kettle Sour on draft, plus Oktoberfest has run out on draft, but there are still cans available, so get ’em quick. Quarter Celtic tapped Irish Lager and Irish Coffee Stout. Sidetrack also put its new Base Camp IPA on cask. Rowley Farmhouse Ales has the latest iteration of its revolving IPA series, Agent Scully, also in cans. If there are any other beers we missed that got released over the last couple of days, please let us know!
