Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
After last week’s blast of early wintry weather, we fully expected to settle into hoodie/black metal/dark beer season. Then it went and warmed up again. Fine, New Mexico, we get it — you don’t want to pick one season. You want all of them. In the same week. (Sigh) Anyway, at least the trend of big beers in cans and bottles continues to try to guide this wacky state towards the proper mindset. Marble rolls out a new seasonal can/draft offering today (Wednesday) with Winter Warmer, available at all three locations and soon at retailers across the state. Ex Novo brings back a favorite from last year with Mountains and Mountains, a hefty stout made with cherry, vanilla, and cocoa nibs (yeah, got to try it already; it’s amazing). That will be released Friday on tap and in cans. La Cumbre brings back its annual beautiful behemoth, La Negra Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at both locations this Friday. And, for anyone traveling south (or that lives down there), Truth or Consequences has three versions of its Honey Winter Ale now available, with the 2020 version on draft, the 2019 whiskey barrel-aged version on draft, and the 2018 whiskey barrel-aged version for sale in bottles.
On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Bow & Arrow brings back Savage Times Sour IPA to its taps on Thursday, plus Desert Revival Blackberry Sour bottles are now in stock. Brew Lab 101 keeps experimenting, with X-IPA 3.0 now on tap. Canteen switches up Social Capital Kettle Sour, now made with peach, plum, and cardamom, while also tapping Leche Suave Milk Stout. Ex Novo will also be tapping Nectaron DIPA this Friday, made with a unique hop from New Zealand. High and Dry brings back Cats from Japan Pale Ale and also added a new stout, Don’t Take Me for Pomegranate. La Cumbre has tapped Czech Engine Lite, a new pilsner. Steel Bender will provide for the hopheads this week with the new Hop Fink Hazy DIPA, made with Citra hops, on tap and in cans this Thursday to kick off a new single-hop DIPA series.
Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales has a new fruited sour called The Armenian on draft and in bottles. Second Street recently put Golden Ale back on tap. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has more Mexi Lager for everyone to enjoy.
