Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.
After last week’s overwhelming number of huge releases, it is a wonder that any of us still have any funds left to spend on beer. But, the show must go on, and Bosque is dropping a little early Christmas present in the form of two unique new beers today (Wednesday). The fact one is red in color and the other is green, well, we’re gonna leave whether or not that was a coincidence or clever planning up to the brewery staff to explain. The red one is Strawberry Diner, a strawberry milkshake IPA that was inspired by the type of strawberry milkshakes you might find at a 1950s-style diner. The green one is The Tallest Trees, a green apple Kool-Aid kettle sour made with edible glitter. These are not normally the type of beers that all of us in the Crew go for, but we have friends who will likely stop by one of the taprooms to snag a four-pack of one or both of these brews. We will certainly tip our proverbial caps to the ongoing ingenuity of our breweries, even if it’s getting a little strange out there. But, if it makes enough folks happy, then keep at it, Bosque. Just mix in a few stouts and DIPAs every now and again to keep us old timers happy.
On the new beer front this week, there some other fresh options to check out. Bow and Arrow releases cans of Cactus Flats with El Dorado hops on Saturday. Boxing Bear rolls out cans of Catch and Release, a West Coast pale ale, also on Saturday. Ex Novo is firing up another run of Sons of Scotland in cans and on draft. Gravity Bound just tapped an as-yet-unnamed hazy DIPA; (UPDATE) it’s called Finite Mathematics. High and Dry sets the stage for Skeletons vs. Unicorns, a new Scottish Wee Heavy. Marble tapped Ol’ Maverick Barleywine for draft/crowler/growler fills, and then will roll out a new canned offering, G’s Juice, on Monday. ReSource taps a new small-batch Scottish Wee Heavy on Sunday.
Up in Santa Fe, Santa Fe Brewing has a limited supply of Black IPA on draft and in cans at its many locations. Second Street keeps its own hazy series going with Sloppy Sloth Citra in cans. Further north, Red River Brewing has unveiled its first Cascadian dark ale, Blackout Ale, on draft. Over in Moriarty, Sierra Blanca has its annual winter favorite, Whiskey Stout, available on tap and to go.
We did get some updates on holiday hours this week. Everyone is closed on Christmas, but as for other days, here is what we have been informed of so far. Please send us an update if you know the hours at a brewery missing from this list. (UPDATE) Actually, Red River Brewing will be open at 3 p.m. on Christmas Day, serving up a traditional holiday meal. Check their Facebook page for more details.
