Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

It’s not quite the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano, but some things are starting to return to our breweries that remind us of the before times. ReSource Brewing will be hosting a special event featuring A Barking Chance Animal Rescue this Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. Rescue staff and volunteers will be on hand to talk about their efforts to help our four-legged friends, how you can adopt a friend of your own, and some merchandise for sale. Rio Tacos and Flour.ish Baked Company will be on hand as well to keep your bellies full. And, on top of all that, ReSource will have their St. Patrick’s Day beer ready early. Drowning in Shamrocks is a new small-batch lager that will be on tap at the brewery only, and yes, it will be the color that you expect. Many of our breweries have stepped up to help animal rescue groups in the past, and we are glad to see that tradition continue. Oh, and since a reader asked us this week, unfortunately the public health order still prohibits any customer dogs being allowed on brewery patios. Leave your four-legged friends at home, please.

Meanwhile, over at Steel Bender, they will be doing a low-key anniversary celebration that starts Saturday and runs through St. Patrick’s Day. The reason it starts Saturday is that it happens to be head brewer Bob Haggerty’s birthday, and to honor him, they are releasing a new batch of their most crushable beer (in our opinion, at least), Hummingbird Pils, on tap and in six-pack cans. There will also be discounts on Traditional and Primo Mug Club memberships through next Wednesday. Traditional costs $30 and comes with a glass growler or your choice of hat. Primo costs $55 and comes with a New Bronze Hammered Growler. Monday will see the release of the 2020 edition of The Judy, on tap and in 375mL and 750mL bottles. There will be a Wild & Krieky cask tapping on Tuesday. We will sum up what’s on deck for next Wednesday on … well, that day in the next edition of Week Ahead.

As for can releases, it’s fairly quiet in comparison to past weeks (we realize this will probably jinx us, but whatever, it’s easy to update an online story). There is a theme as Canteen is releasing Sundance Kolsch in six-pack cans for the first time on Friday, while Boxing Bear brings back four-packs of New Mexi-kolsch on Saturday. (UPDATE) Boxing Bear is also canning Hallertau Blanc Lager for a Saturday release. Bow & Arrow has a mystery bottle, or perhaps bottles, coming out this week as well. We await the revelation of the identity/ies of this/these beer(s). (UPDATE) There is one bottle, and its name is Ranch Debris Raspberry Sour, named after the mysterious (UFO?) debris found on a Roswell farm in 1947.

On the new draft beer front this week, there some fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. Boese Brothers gets into the season with some fresh Irish Red. Bombs Away drops more Operation Single Hop IPA, plus the new Night Ops DIPA. Bosque has a mystery IPA (Cumulus? Scale Tipper?) described as “a blast from the past” arriving at its taprooms on Friday (UPDATE) which turns out to be Moon Cannon DIPA in four-pack cans. Ex Novo really did put Stiff Upper Lip ESB on draft this week. (UPDATE) Sidetrack has a small amount of Buzz Bomb back on tap.

Up in Santa Fe, Beer Creek rolls out some Ducks in a Row Dark Lager (Schwarzbier). Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing has a full-sized batch of a new pilsner, Alivio Lager, plus four new small-batch beers — Razzleberry Stout, Devil’s Claw Brown, Lemondrop Sour, and Maple Imperial Nut Brown Ale.

(WEEKEND UPDATE) Quite a few additional beers went on tap over the last couple days. Bombs Away has a fresh batch of Independence Amber. Boxing Bear had to switch things up and make Hallertau Blanc Lager a draft-only release. Gravity Bound released Lemon Layer, a new sour, and Natural Satellite, a new hazy DIPA. La Cumbre has Pogue Mahone back on nitro before St. Patrick’s Day. Rio Bravo tapped some Vienna Lager and Hefeweizen. We have also re-added Turquoise Trail Brewing to the listings, as they are open again.
