The Week Ahead in Beer: Balloons Take to the Skies as We Celebrate the Season of the Malt

Well, this is pretty cool. After a year and a half of waiting, events arrive like an avalanche this week to bury us in delicious beers, foods, and good times aplenty. So grab your stein, put on your Dirndl or Lederhosen, and let’s get right to it shall we.

New Draft:

Boese Brothers gets into the spirit with the tapping of their Oktoberfest, and brings their Drunken Astronaut DIPA, brewed with Galaxy, El Dorado, and Nelson along with it. Harmon Lane will be tapping R.I.P.A. (Red IPA) on Wednesday (today). High and Dry gets festive with Amarzen (a Märzen). La Cumbre taps Gilded Age Porter this Friday. Marble will be tapping EndAlz, a blueberry, blackberry, lemon wheat ale this Friday, with $1 per pint sold donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Steel Bender gets spooky with Ale Witch Pumpkin Ale this Thursday. Tumbleroot gets imperial with Raspberry Rye Whisky Imperial Stout, on draft now. Update: Rio Bravo taps Half Baked, a double fudge marshmallow coconut pastry stout. Sidetrack brings back Crystal Method Lager. Turtle Mountain follows the weather with In Port Order, and English American porter. Sobremesa has tapped their Oktoberfest for the first weekend of Oktober.

New Cans:

Bow & Arrow releases Paradox of Choice, a hazy West Coast-style IPA with Citra and Amarillo this Friday. Boxing Bear gets murky with Murkules Hazy DIPA arriving Saturday. Canteen has their Oktoberfest available in cans as well as on draft. Harmon Lane will have cans of R.I.P.A. (Red IPA) available this Friday. La Cumbre brings back a crew favorite, Gilded Age Porter, on Friday. Steel Bender will have six-packs of Ale Witch Pumpkin Ale available Thursday.

Events:

Oh, just a few events this week, not much to do at all, really. Actually, there are a plethora of options throughout the week and overflowing into next week. Apparently we all need to get out and enjoy ourselves after the last year and a half, who would’ve thought? (utter sarcasm, couldn’t you tell? – Solo) More on events during the Balloon Fiesta this Friday.

Ponderosa has their GABF gold medal-awarding ceremony this Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. (courtesy of the New Mexico Brewer’s Guild) for their Italian Pilsner. There will be live music and cake to boot. Prost!

Rio Bravo is celebrating their sixth anniversary this week! (Update: The Beer Dinner has been postponed, we will keep you appraised when there is a new date set. -Solo) We begin with a beer pairing dinner this Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (Tickets are $45 per person, available here via Eventbrite). The dinner will be held in the upstairs barrel room and consist of a four-course dinner, paired with four different Rio Bravo beers. Saturday heralds Rio Bravo’s Oktoberfest, which will include traditional music, Oktoberfest beers, and German food offerings. Per Rio Bravo: “Albuquerque Oktoberfest is one of Rio Bravo’s favorite events to host because it falls right around our anniversary. This year marks 6 years for us, and after the past year and a half, you’d better believe we are going to Pröst to that!”

Rumor Brewing hosts their Fall Festival celebrating their rebranding this Friday from noon to 8 p.m.; with fall activities all day, and live music from Javier Ortega noon to 1:45 p.m., Adam Hooks from 2 to 3:45 p.m., and Le Chat Lunatique from 4:15 to 7:15 p.m.

Dagmar’s Strudel House (2704 Southern Blvd) is hosting their Oktoberfest this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. with beer and cider from Brew Lab 101, and many delightful German food offerings to choose from.

ULLR Fest returns this Saturday on Pajarito Mountain above Los Alamos with the NM Craft Beerfest from noon to 5 p.m., and beers from Bathtub Row, Beer Creek, Boese Brothers, Boxing Bear, Canteen, Hidden Mountain, Red River, Tumbleroot, and Second Street. Cost is $20, ID and vaccination card with proof of vaccination is required. More on this tomorrow (Thursday).

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
