It is only fitting that I, Stoutmeister, decided to write this edition of our weekly roundup of beers on tap and special events … and Comcast knocks out the internet for my entire neighborhood. Good thing the wi-fi at Canteen is working! What, did you expect me to go to Starbucks? Anyway, on with the show, and we’re going to stick with Franz Solo’s format.
New Draft:
Bombs Away managed to sneak in a new batch of Dunkelweizen. Casa Vieja recently added Quick Whit and Skittle Blonde Ale and (UPDATE) Hops Kin ESB. Differential gets into the season with Raspberry Marzen. Ex Novo tapped its collaboration with El Pinto, a tequila-barre-aged fruited gose called Esse Locum (and it’s available at the restaurant, too). High and Dry has more #PSLAF, a pastry stout. Late Shift tapped their Oktoberfest. (UPDATE) Marble rolled out Joe Pumpkin, a latte-inspired ale. Rio Bravo indulged everyone’s sweet tooth with Cotton Candy Shandy. Steel Bender will tap Los Ranchos Cider on Thursday. Thirsty Eye brought back Good Gourd. Toltec added a New Mexico Dark Lager.
Up in Santa Fe, Tumbleroot tapped Raspberry Rye Imperial Stout. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row rolled out Caldera Kolsch and Patio Hopped Pale, brewed with the hops that grow on the, well, you can guess. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing added a Festbier and Bad Bully Pale Ale, a collaboration with the Mesilla Valley Homebrew Club (which we will have more details on soon).
New Cans:
Bow & Arrow releases Vida West, a Mexican-style dark lager, on Friday, and (UPDATE) Rise to the Sun, a blue corn saison brewed in collaboration with Revelry Brewing of South Carolina, on Monday as part of Indigenous Peoples Day. Canteen rolled out Pink Warrior, a fruited wheat ale, with proceeds going to the Pink Warrior House Foundation (more on this one, too, quite soon). Ex Novo will be raising Spirits of the Dead, a hazy IPA, on Friday. Marble brings back Starlight Wheat Ale as of today (Wednesday).
Events:
The biggest event of the week, by size and scope, is the New Mexico Music Fan Fair at Lava Rock. It’s a three-day event on Friday (6 to 10 p.m.), Saturday (1 to 10), and Sunday (1 to 8). A $30 VIP ticket gets you access to all three days. There are too many bands performing to list here, so check out the NMMFF page on Facebook for a full list.
The First Friday Art Walk is this Friday, and Red Door has scheduled The Tarot Salon Art Exhibit from 5 p.m. onward. We have not heard what Boese Brothers and/or Sidetrack have planned, yet, but keep an eye on their social media pages. (UPDATE) Sidetrack will have Adobe Disco from 5 to 11 p.m. for music, and there will be an art show next door at Zendo Coffee.
Tractor, as usual, has multiple events at all four taprooms, so check out those in their capsule below. We would like to highlight the Hops & Dreams: Halloween Edition from the Desert Darlings on Saturday night at 8 at Wells Park. If you don’t have tickets to New Mexico United, we highly recommend attending what is probably their favorite show of the year to perform.
(UPDATE) We apologize for missing this one initially, but DogtoBEARfest is back at Boxing Bear all day this Saturday. There will be commemorative liter and half-liter mugs for sale, with 10 percent of proceeds going to Watermelon Mountain Ranch, which will also have an adoption event from 2 to 5 p.m. at the brewery. There will also be live music from the Daytrippers from 4 to 8 p.m., and a special demo from High Desert Flameworks, also from 4 to 8. The mugs will also be available at the three other taprooms.
Up north, Santa Fe is hosting its annual Oktoberfiesta at the main brewery location. Luke will have more on that event soon. Boese Brothers Los Alamos will also have an Oktoberfest party this Saturday, with beers, food, and live music starting at noon. Even further north, the annual Red River Oktoberfest is back all weekend, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a grand finale on Sunday from 11 to 4.
As always, if we have missed any beers or live events, please email us at nmdarksidebrewcrew@gmail.com.
To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
