ACHOO! Ah, yes, spring in New Mexico, better known as The Pollening. Actually, wait, isn’t it still winter? Nope, spring. Nah, winter. All right, look, we are as tired of the constantly fluctuating weather as all of you are by now, but the good news there is still beer. Lots of beer. Lots of delicious beer. As March Madness approaches, there is a wide variety of awesome brews coming out this week, plus some cool events including the start of Steel Bender’s five-day anniversary party, and it should help us all avoid whatever the heck it is we are allergic to outdoors. Well, maybe not, but at least for a few glorious moments per pint, we can forget about the pollen-choked skies.
Bombs Away tapped M1A2 Common and will have Just an Amber back soon. Canteen brings back Helles Awaits and Export Lager on Friday. Casa Vieja is thinking ahead with American Summer Blonde Ale and Casa Blanca. Downshift has brought its second beer, Snow Day Hazy IPA, to Outpost 1706 in Old Town. Harmon Lane gets into the season early with O’Danny Boy’s Red. High and Dry tapped Vermillion Waves (Red IPA). ReSource tapped Brave Noise Mango & Chile Pale Ale, which we wrote about in detail here. Starr Brothers recently brought back its pale ale, Green Manalishi. Steel Bender will tap Big DIPA, the first of its five anniversary beers, on Sunday. Thirsty Eye tapped Zitrusfrühling, a single-hop Mandarina Bavaria IPA. (UPDATES) Emerald Isle Irish Red is already on tap at Brew Lab 101 in advance of St. Patrick’s Day. Canteen tapped Crimson Pale. Sidetrack added Expedition IPA.
Up in Santa Fe, Rowley Farmhouse Ales added 18 ∆ MOS, a coffee imperial stout, and Aromatherapy, a hazy IPA. Second Street tapped Toast the Dawn, a helles lager. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row tapped Australian Best Extra Stout, its entry in the Stout Invitational. Down south, Truth or Consequences Brewing has a fresh batch of Airstream Ultra (Light Lager) on tap at the brewery.
Canteen brought back Helles Awaits for another run in cans. Ex Novo added a new bottle, Unexpect the Expected, a barrel-aged, mixed-culture, peach saison. La Cumbre rolls out Desert Vibe Hazy DIPA in cans and on draft this Friday. Marble has finally canned longtime favorite Dupy’s Dunkel, which also arrives Friday. Rio Bravo added Dice Roll Hazy IPA, which just won a silver medal at the Best of Craft Beer Awards. Steel Bender will debut Double Key Lime Dynamite in cans and on draft on Monday, followed by bottles and limited draft of Bigger Boat Barleywine on Tuesday. (UPDATE) Ex Novo brings back its GABF gold medal winner, Threat Level Turquoise, in cans and on draft this Friday. Canteen also has Export Pale Lager back in cans. Bow & Arrow has cans of Hola Hazy available.
As we noted recently, we are no longer listing events with each brewery capsule, but we will always include a few notable events here.
Friday — Goth Night & Dark Market is back at Tractor Wells Park starting at 8 p.m.
Saturday — Thirsty Eye will host Tom Marches On, a tribute to Tom Waits featuring more than a dozen local musicians, starting at 7 p.m.
The Desert Darlings return to Tractor Wells Park for Hops & Dreams: Wizard of Oz Edition, starting at 8 p.m.
Sunday — The Six Pack Running Series kicks off at Canteen from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and just $10 gets you a run, a beer, and a donation to Girls on the Run Rio Grande.
La Cumbre is hosting Cosmic Bowling at Silva Lanes, starting at 2 p.m., but if you did not already register, it’s too late as the event has sold out.
New Mexico United plays its home opener at Isotopes Park at 5 p.m., and the craft beer will almost certainly be flowing at the tailgate beforehand.
Tuesday — Le Chat Lunatique will be on the Murphy Stage at Steel Bender from 5:30 to 8 p.m., as that is the official date of the brewery’s fifth anniversary.
As always, if we have missed any beers or events, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or contact us on social media.
To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
