That headline might leave one confused, since New Mexico is not a state that is replete with bodies of water. However, if you ask a longtime resident or two, they might just answer the question for you.
Elephant Butte is arguably one of the most famous man-made lakes in the state, and starting the first weekend of June, it will be home to the first lake-side brewery taproom.
The Brew Dock will open the weekend of June 5-7, a creation of Rio Rancho’s Brew Lab 101 and Marina Vista NM. There will be live music, cornhole competitions, other festivities, and of course plenty of beer and cider.
For those unfamiliar, the town of Elephant Butte is just north-northeast of Truth or Consequences. Marina del Sur is the main southern access point to the lake, and The Brew Dock will be located off the existing patio space.
The Brew Dock is expected to operate mainly on weekends throughout the summer season.
Brew Lab 101 sent us a press release with reaction from folks in the community down south.
“Elephant Butte has always been an incredible place to be on the water. It’s the most visited state park in New Mexico, with about one million visitors each year, and until now there hasn’t been a true gathering space on the water,” said Peter Meiusi, owner of Marina Vista NM. “Adding the Brew Dock gives people another reason to stay, connect, and enjoy the lake.”
“This is an exciting addition for Elephant Butte and a great example of the kind of investment that continues to elevate our community,” said Richard Holcomb, mayor of the City of Elephant Butte. “The Brew Dock gives both residents and visitors another reason to come to the lake, stay longer, and experience everything our waterfront and surrounding area have to offer.”
“What Marina Vista New Mexico is building at Elephant Butte Lake adds a new level of energy and appeal to one of our most important outdoor recreation destinations, encouraging visitors to stay longer, explore more, and experience everything this region has to offer,” said Lancing Adams, Acting Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. “This is the kind of destination-driven investment that strengthens New Mexico’s tourism economy and showcases the experiences travelers are looking for today.”
The Crew was invited to an ongoing media week, but alas, we long ago booked plans to visit some breweries in the mountains of Colorado this weekend (which we will share in a separate feature). At some point, though, we will have to make our way south to check out The Brew Dock, and also visit our friends at nearby Truth or Consequences Brewing.
