One last time into the breach, dear friends, one last time!

Well, this is it. Eleven days of fun have come down to one final day’s worth of events.

The final slate includes a sold-out golf tournament, a breakfast special, a brunch, an anniversary party, a celebration of casks, a unique charity drive, and one final sensory experience to close it all out. Thanks for being along for the ride with us!

Featured Event

Every day we will pick what we consider the biggest, most interesting, most unique event. This does not mean you should go to only this event and ignore the rest. All of them deserve your attention, but realistically, you can probably only attend a few. So we will make our daily pick, and you can either jump on it, or declare the Crew is foolish (we kinda are) and pick your own.

What: Le Cask Lunatique. Where: Steel Bender Brewyard. When: Noon. Cost: No cover charge.

Details: Once again, the Steel Bender brewers have gone a little overboard (in a good way) with six special casks on the patio bar. The Witty Gin is made from The Village Wit infused with the same botanicals and spices that Left Turn Distilling uses for its Old Tom Gin. Mulvaney’s Old Fashioned features the Irish red infused with cinnamon, orange peel, nutmeg, clove, allspice, and sweet cherries. Compa-rinha uses Compa Los Ranchos Lager conditioned with palm sugar, lime zest and juice. Stay Golden Sunrise utilizes the new Stay Golden Ale with maraschino cherries and fresh orange zest and juice. Funky George Porter adds a little brettanomyces for some proper funk. Finally, we cannot wait for Blue Bullet’s Wood-Aged Irish Whiskey, where the brewers took oak chips soaked in Left Turn’s NM Blue Corn Whiskey and added them to a cask of the Irish dry stout. Oh, and Le Chat Lunatique will be playing inside from 3:30 to 5:30.

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s six breweries, one in Los Alamos, and one in Moriarty also joining the party.

Marble is taking the beer-and-food pairing game to a new level tonight (Wednesday) at the Heights taproom. The Brews & Bites Challenge will pit brewmaster Josh Trujillo and chef Israel Rivera from The Shop against head brewer John Heine and chef Tony Chiado from Kitsune. How does that work? Each chef and brewer has paired up a series of Marble beers with tapas-style foods (four total), with participants getting to vote on their favorite. It costs $30 and tickets are still available (but going fast) at the taproom. It runs from 6 to 8 p.m.

If you cannot make it there tonight, we have some other fun suggestions for the week. The Desert Darlings are back at Tractor Wells Park on Friday night at 8 for the latest edition of Hops & Dreams. This time around it’s the Quentin Tarantino Edition, so make sure to arrive early to get a seat (the joint was filled to the brim last month) to see what these wonderfully creative ladies can do with eight movies worth of costumes and fun. Another option will be to head over to Green Jeans Farmery for its third anniversary bash this weekend. Santa Fe Brewing will of course be at the center of the fun, with the release of the new Twisted Root on Friday. There will be live music, other special beer releases, food specials from Amore Pizzeria, animal adoptions from Watermelon Mountain Ranch on Saturday (noon-4 p.m.), and other charities will also benefit.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Bombs Away brings back the High Speed Low Drag Lager. Bosque is feeling sessionable with Public House Pale Ale. Bow & Arrow is tapping Saison De Blanc on Thursday. Kaktus switches things up with some Rauchbier, Doppelbock, and California Common, and St. Paul’s Porter is back as well. La Cumbre has added Vienna Lager. Marble gets hoppy with 1272 IPA and Desert Fog, plus Jabroni Exxxtra and Session White. Ponderosa will have a Hefeweizen on tap by the weekend. Quarter Celtic resurrects Kill or be KILT, plus adds Dark Pedro. Sidetrack brings back Co-Mo IPA. Starr Brothers has a fresh batch of Black Friday.

Up in Santa Fe, Blue Corn declares it’s clobberin’ time with SMASH Pale Ale. Rowley Farmhouse Ales is rollin’ with the Notorious BdG. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has Little Bird Blonde back on tap, plus newcomers in Dunkel Bock, Flat Cap Brown, and Lichtenheiner.

The sheer variety of styles on tap is quite impressive. Bottles of Dark Mesa, a barrel-aged quad with brett, are still on sale at the brewery, but the supply is limited. Boxing Bear Brewing Company — (505) 897-2327

Beers: Simcoe SMASH, Low Rye-der IPA, Featherweight Session IPA, Strong Arm Pale Ale, Sucker Punch DIPA, Bear Trap Hoppy Ale, Das Bear German Pilsner, Bear Knuckle IPA. The most recent additions are the Bear Knuckle, Bear Trap, and Das Bear. There are still a few bottles left of the barrel-aged Standing 8 Stout. The Chocolate Milk Stout is on the regular and nitro taps.

Obey the Darkside Stout (8% ABV, 50 IBU) is now available, and take note that this batch is so good it has been entered in the World Beer Cup. You can try it side-by-side with Dark ‘n Lusty Stout, the winner of this year’s Brew Crew Stout Challenge.

The Hop Hill (7.1% ABV, 69 IBU) was the most recent addition.

The most recent additions include the Rauchbier, Doppelbock, and California Common. The C-Thru is what it sounds like, a pale blonde stout with a heavy coffee aroma and flavor.

News: We are sad to report that Kaktus has closed its Nob Hill taproom. Try as the staff might, the location on Monte Vista simply could never get going. Thankfully, the main brewery is still going strong in Bernalillo!

Beers: Spanglish, Gold Medal Pilsner, Saphir Single-Hop Pale Ale, Hop-Mosa, Bernalillo County Stout. The most recent addition is the Pilsner, which was brewed in the German style. Get some of that delicious BC Stout before the supply runs out! A new Hefeweizen will replace Spanglish by the weekend.

News: You can now find India Pale Lager 2.0 for sale in cans, at the brewery and at local liquor stores, including Total Wine, Bird of Paradise, Jubilation, Kelly’s, and Quarters!

Unless you have been vacationing in the Arctic or working in a freezer (That pretty much describes the Topes’ press box with its psychotic A/C unit. — S), I’m sure you have noticed that it has been just a wee bit hot in New Mexico as of late. Need another excuse to hide in the shade with a refreshing brew? I didn’t think so, but Santa Fe Brewing will be offering two additional reasons this weekend. You will want to celebrate at the Albuquerque taproom as they release Autonomous Collective DIPA and Sunset Limited!

It all kicks off at 4:30 p.m., right after the IPA Challenge preliminary round wraps up at Rio Bravo. Autonomous Collective DIPA and Sunset Limited Cervesa de Garde will be on tap, with bombers of Sunset Limited available for $1 off for this event. There will also be an appearance by SFBC’s Single Barrel Sour ale! SFBC’s brewers and sales people will be present to meet with the public, so make sure to say hi.

Autonomous Collective is SFBC’s summer installment in their series of seasonal IPA releases. Brewed with Amarillo, El Dorado, and Columbus hops, and dry hopped three times, it carries a mix of orange peel and honeydew melon in aroma and flavor, with a bit of malt sweetness, and a fruity/resinous hop flavor in the finish. This will definitely quench your thirst during the summer months.

Sunset Limited Cervesa de Garde is a change from the styles that SFBC has become known for. Brewed in collaboration with Bayou Teche Brewery in Arnaudville, Louisiana, Sunset Limited is brewed in the Biere de Garde style, which is traditionally malty and toasty, and possesses lower hopping levels, but enough alcohol to preserve the beer.

The official description from SFBC: “This version is a combination of the traditional style brewed by our friends at Bayou Teche, then made more New Mexican with the addition of Red Chile and Blue Corn, then cold stored for six weeks to further mellow out. Short version: toasty and malty, fruity and sweet, with an alcoholic and red chile heat in the finish.”

Make sure to stop in for a pint of this one-off beer, as it is limited to taproom and bomber availability. Once it is gone, it’s gone!

It’s go time, people!

ABQ Beer Week 2016 swings into action today (Thursday) with 14 events, from downtown to Nob Hill to the Northeast Heights, and all points in between. There will be special tappings, beer and food pairings, live music, and a whole lot more.

To help you out today and every day throughout this series of events, the Crew will have daily previews encapsulating every Beer Week-affiliated event. Think of us as your one-stop-shop for all the basic info you need.

Featured event

Every day we will pick what we consider the biggest, most interesting, most unique event. This does not mean you should go to only this event and ignore the rest. All of them deserve your attention, but realistically, you can probably only attend a few. So we will make our daily pick, and you can either jump on it, or declare the Crew is foolish (we kinda are) and pick your own.

What: Beer, Cheese & More! Where: Marble Brewery Downtown. When: 5 to 8 p.m. Cost: $25, buy in advance at the pub as they almost always sell out.

Details: One of the most popular of all the annual events will be part of today’s kickoff. Head downtown and get a tray of delicious cheeses, provided by Whole Foods, with each style paired up with a specific beer. Marble marketing director Elyse Cushman said she wants to keep a lot of it a surprise, but she did provide some cool info.

“We are, for the most part, using all special beers,” Elyse said. “Besides the Oatmeal Stout and the Pilsner, we’re using the Mosaic, which is a very, very special beer; the Brettanna Rouge, which is my personal favorite pairing out of this group, because the Rouge is so special, it’s a barrel-aged red with brettanomyces, it’s a very special beer as well; and then the 111 Farmhouse. I think they’re really great seasonals.”

Oh, come on, Elyse, just a little hint on the pairings?

“In terms of what cheeses were using, I think you’re going to be surprised,” she said. “I’m really excited about the flow of it, if that makes sense. I’m excited that we start with, they’re all decadent cheeses, but they’re not as pungent as other ones. We kind of have this roller coaster, this kind is pungent, this kind is spicy. It’s a palate roller coaster.

“I’m particularly excited about the last pairing, and that’s all I will say. The Brettanna is my favorite, but the last one is whoa, you would never expect it.”

Mystery beer! That alone should spark even more interest. Get thee to Marble!

Why you should go: Great beer paired with unique cheeses, plus the usual Marble vibe of endless fun. That should be plenty of reason. But, again, get those tickets before it starts! (If you have not already.)

What: Marble Special Tapping. Where: Spinn’s Burgers & Beer, 4411 Montano Rd. NW. When: 11:30 a.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: Marble will be tapping their new Marble Saison, which is a cousin to the 111 Farmhouse. Why you should go: All of you living on the West Side could probably use a beer with your lunch. Don’t worry, we won’t tell your bosses.

What: Santa Fe and Boese Brothers Collaboration Tapping. Where: Santa Fe ABQ Taproom. When: 3 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: The good folks at SFBC and their pals at Boese Brothers have blended their State Pen and Patriot Porters, but only after aging them in oak barrels. Why you should go: Because a blend of two great porters that have been oak aged just sounds wonderful.

What: Founders Sampling. Where: Total Wine Uptown. When: 3:30 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: Sample many of the top offerings from Michigan’s Founders Brewing. Why you should go: Free beer! (And you can grab a sixer on your way out.)

What: Abita Special Firkin Tapping. Where: Anodyne. When: 4 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: The Louisiana brewery has sent a firkin of their Horchata Turbodog. Why you should go: That has to be one of the strangest sounding, yet intriguing beers being offered anywhere. Leave it to Anodyne to be the ones to get their hands on it.

What: German Beer & Brats Night. Where: Rio Bravo Brewing. When: 4 p.m. Cost: $15 for a pint, brat, and potato salad. Details: Grab some German-themed grub and wash it down with a German-style beer, plus there will be live music from Jill Cohen at 4 p.m., and Grace at 6:30 p.m. Why you should go: It’s as close as you will get to Deutschland without requiring Lederhosen.

What: Marble Sampling and Special Tapping. Where: Whole Foods Academy. When: 4 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: There will be a sampling of Marble’s packaged beers, plus they’re putting a keg of Abricot Sour on tap in the Sandia Saloon, Whole Foods’ new craft beer bar. Why you should go: For all you Northeast Heights residents, you were gonna stop to buy some food for dinner anyway, so you might as well have a few samples and a pint, too.

What: La Cumbre Beer and Cheese Pairing. Where: Jubilation. When: 4 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: Get some samples of the new Strawberry Gose, plus Elevated IPA, Red Ryeot, Malpais Stout, Slice of Hefen, and Project Dank, each paired with a matching cheese. Why you should go: Free beer! Free cheese! And you can then buy some to take home (the beer, we’re not sure about the cheese).

What: Stone Special Release. Where: Two Fools Tavern. When: 4 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: Stone will bring Americano Stout and Bourbon Barrel-Aged Arrogant Bastard to one of Nob Hill’s finest institutions. Why you should go: Those big, dark, beautiful beers would pair nicely with some fish and chips or beef boxty.

What: Santa Fe Brewing Beer Dinner. Where: Torino’s @ Home, 7600 Jefferson St. NE. When: 6 p.m. Cost: $45 per person, call (505) 797-4491 for reservations. Details: AmyO got all the information you need. Why you should go: Delicious beer, delicious food, and you get to hang with one of the top two brewers from the largest brewery in New Mexico.

What: Colorado Brewery Showcase. Where: O’Niell’s Nob Hill. When: 6 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: Four Colorado heavyweights — Boulder, Left Hand, New Belgium, Oskar Blues — will have their beers available for sampling, plus many will be on tap. Meet the brewery sales reps and grab some swag. Why you should go: Free beer, nice people, plus you can stick around for a meal and a pint.

What: Ballast Point Special Tapping. Where: Nob Hill Bar & Grill. When: 6 p.m. Cost: No entry fee. Details: The Piper Down just won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup in the Irish-style Red category. This batch was barrel aged, just to make it more awesome. Why you should go: Award-winning barrel-aged beer. Need we say more?

What: Third Annual Sierra Nevada Sausage and Cheese Tasting. Where: O’Niell’s Juan Tabo. When: 6 p.m. Cost: TBA. Details: The ultimate food-and-beer pairing from Sierra Nevada is back. This year will feature the full lineup of 2016 Beer Camp Across America on tap, all paired with unique sausages and cheeses and more. Why you should go: This year’s Beer Camp is quite a bit better than what they had last year. That alone should convince you to go.

What: Brews and Blues with Roger Lewis All Stars. Where: Albuquerque Brewing. When: 7 p.m. Cost: No cover. Details: Head up to ABC for a jam session. Bring your own instrument(s), but take note it’s mostly blues and jazz. Why you should go: If you’re a musician or just love listening to music and/or dancing, this is your event.

While trying to ignore the 8,000 happy people photos from Denver on Thursday, I jumped at the chance to attend an invite-only soft opening for the media and other assorted folks at the new Santa Fe Brewing taproom at Albuquerque’s Green Jeans Farmery. With beer tickets in hand and a number of helpful staff members present as guides, I got to tour the new facility, which opens today (Friday) at 4 p.m. to the general public.

As a primer, I first want to remind people how to get there. If you are driving north on Carlisle over the I-40 bridge, take the very first right onto Cutler, which at that point is a one-way street that only goes east. You can’t miss the complex, which will be on your right. The parking lot encircles it on almost all sides. You can also park along Cutler, which becomes a two-way street just past the Farmery. Of course, not everyone will be coming north on Carlisle, and there is no access to Cutler from southbound Carlisle. If you are traveling southbound on Carlisle or east or westbound on Menaul, your best bet is to go east of Carlisle to Morningside, then take a right and go south across the arroyo and over to Cutler. Then take a right and you will see the complex ahead. Google Maps should not let you down, so you also have that, and sometimes it can be less complicated to visually see the path rather than have someone tell you how to get there.

Once you arrive and park, head on into the complex. You cannot miss the SFBC taproom, thanks to that huge tower that looms above it. The taproom is effectively broken into four interconnected spaces. There is the downstairs bar area, the upstairs indoor area, the downstairs patio the rings the south side of the building, and the upstairs patio and bar that also faces to the south. The majority of the beer taps are downstairs. Just about every SFBC beer you can think of was available. From all the old favorites (Happy Camper, Nut Brown, Pale Ale, Black IPA, Hefeweizen, State Pen Porter, Imperial Java Stout, Chicken Killer) to the new kid (Gold) to the current seasonal (Oktoberfest) to the rare specialties (Barrel Aged Sour State Pen Porter, Kriek, ECS Highland Heath) are all available. You can do flights, pints, and all sizes in between. The popular Chicken Mixers menu, where other beers are combined with Chicken Killer Barleywine, is also available at the taproom. Previously it was only at the main brewery in Santa Fe.

Overall the taproom can hold 135 people, or so I was told by SFBC owner Brian Lock, who was there to greet guests Thursday. He later shared a story about how the two patios survived the pounding of that random hail storm earlier in the week. The coverings that keep the sun off people on the upstairs patio were rather remarkable in how they held up despite having an estimated 150 pounds apiece of hail on top.

Take note that the rest of the Green Jeans tenants are not yet open, so unfortunately their food will not be present for you to enjoy along with a beer, but several said they hope to be open in the next two to four weeks. There will be a food truck tonight and Saturday, or at least that is the plan, for man (and woman) cannot live off beer alone. Too bad, because I think a lot of us would try.

Anyway, I could ramble on some more about the taproom, but instead I should let the pictures tell the story.

Distillery 365, which just opened recently, has become the latest local libations spot to decide to open a second location. They are set to join Santa Fe Brewing at the new Green Jeans Farmery, the new reused shipping container facility located at Carlisle and I-40. They will be taking the spirits, but there beer will remain back at the original location on Stanford south of Carlisle. Co-owner/distiller Matt Simonds sat down to chat about the decision to make the leap to operating two locations so soon in their existence.

NMDSBC: Take me to the genesis of wanting to do a tasting room, a secondary location so soon after opening the first one.

Matt: The gist of the matter is we had no immediate plans, no short-term plans to open up a secondary location. We were approached by the building owner, the developer Roy Solomon, because they’d originally planned on putting a winery in there. With the recent legislative changes every winery in the state went to the biggest brewery and said, ‘Hey, carry our wine!’ So they had no interest in having a winery there. And so Roy came up to me that he had the idea of the distillery instead. He approached us and asked if we’d be interested. I talked with the partners and we said yeah, we’d be dumb not to.

Just the visibility of the space itself, the uniqueness of the design, the architecture of us, the location, the visibility from the interstate, the fact we’re 15 feet from the biggest brewery in the state, we decided yeah, this is something we want to make happen. Let’s go look at the books and see if it’s even feasible. Yeah, we figured out that we could probably make a go of it.

The nice thing is, because of the some of those things I mentioned — the visibility and the location — if this is a net zero proposition, it’s a win. Because it’s such high visibility for our brand. We’re just getting ready to do distribution here in the next week or two, really wanting push the vodka and the rum. So yeah, we have this big billboard at Carlisle and I-40, basically. And if it happens to make some money for us, and we think it will, all the better.

NMDSBC: Can you describe the space itself?

Matt: It’s a really, really small space, about 320 square feet. It has a little outdoor deck off the deck that’s not included in that. We’ll actually have access to one of the rooftop decks as part of our license, so we’ll be able to have some outdoor seating. But the bar itself will a fraction of the size of this tasting room. Jake, our bar manager, has a lot of experience with Chama River, the Microbar that they did. I’ve been relying on him heavily for conceptually what this place looks like, that sort of thing.

I think it’s going to be a similar setup as this, just a U-shaped bar with seating around it and relying heavily on the patio.

NMDSBC: And you going to be selling just spirits, right?

Matt: Just spirits, right.

NMDSBC: I kinda figured since Santa Fe is right there.

Matt: Because the spirits are really our focus, we were OK with that.

One thing that Roy Solomon, the developer, is really focused on doing is picking businesses in such a way that you’re going to have a cooperative environment. If we were try to offer beer and by extension compete with Santa Fe Brewing, that would make no sense. If we can do our spirits and we can do our Bloody Mary bar and we can do something else that’s going to bring people to the development, that’s good for Santa Fe Brewing, that’s good for us and that’s good for the different food tenants that are there. That’s one thing that really attracted us to the space in general was Roy’s attitude to what he’s trying to develop.

NMDSBC: So can two people come in and say, order a pizza from Amore, and then one goes to Santa Fe and gets a pint and another comes to you and gets a mixed drink, and then both can sit together upstairs?

Matt: So the challenge would be, for the most part that’s true, the challenge would be there’s no overlap in the brewing and distillery licenses. You can’t bring a beer over to our space, you can’t bring a mixed drink over to their space.

One of the things they’re looking at is an app, so you can get on your app and say I’m sitting at the distillery deck and I feel like a pizza. You can go and have the food anywhere within the complex. The food is the easy part.

NMDSBC: I know it’s always tough to set a certain date, but what’s your timetable looking like for opening this place?

Matt: I would say that if we’re open by the holidays, that would be awesome. We just submitted the license a couple of days ago. So it’s about three months, you’re looking at mid-December. Fortunately the build-out, improvement stuff will be so much simpler than what we did here. The licensing will be simpler than we did here. I think that’s a pretty realistic timetable. I know there was a huge push for some of the other tenants to be open by Balloon Fiesta. I think that’s a little unrealistic. I think the latest was mid-October was when Santa Fe Brewing wants to be open. They’re close.

Even in the two weeks we’ve been on the scene, they’re moving. Those last few steps are often the most difficult. But if you see so much movement, it’s cool.

The future home of Santa Fe Brewing’s first Albuquerque taproom is coming together.

Back on Friday I was planning on charging down to the “crane-lifting ceremony” at Green Jeans Farmery, the site near Carlisle and I-40 that will host the first Santa Fe Brewing taproom in Albuquerque. Of course, whenever you have an hour to get from work to anywhere else, there will inevitably be delays. I pretty much totally missed the ceremony for a variety of annoying little reasons I will not bore anyone with here. I did manage to arrive as they were wrapping up, making sure to chat with SFBC rep Silas Sims and the head of the project, Roy Solomon. The latter was kind enough to send over a bunch of photos so we could share with everyone the nascent stages of construction.

The Farmery is made up of old shipping containers located the western terminus of Cutler Ave., a road that runs parallel to I-40 on the northern side (it effectively ends at Carlisle). Getting to the site took some work, with Google Maps not exactly being the best of friends for a change. For future reference, you can get there by the following means.

Northbound on Carlisle: Turn right at the one-way (eastbound) entrance to the Hampton Hotel, just after you cross the overpass above I-40 and then the Embudo Channel, and before you get to the Hotel Cascadia. You cannot access this way via Carlisle southbound, however.

Off Menaul: Whether you are going west or east on Menaul, the following streets go through and connect southbound to Cutler — Morningside, Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, Quincy, and of course San Mateo. Just drive south to Cutler and turn west. You won’t be able to miss the Farmery just beyond the Hampton.

All right, now that we got that out of the way, here are all the pictures Roy sent us.

The Farmery will have a number of eateries that will surround the taproom. Amore Neapolitan Pizzeria (a favorite of Brandon and his girlfriend Taylor), Epiphany Espresso, Phat Burger, and Bocadillos Slow Roasted Sandwiches were among the first to sign up.

There will be about 80 parking spots available, but from the sound of things the folks at the Hampton Inn may let folks use their lot as well. Hey, the Farmery could bring them even more business and that is always a good thing. We imagine the folks at Cascadia will feel the same way; one can only go down water slides for so long (well, kids could probably go on forever, but their parents will welcome the chance to unwind with a Happy Camper).

Overall, the project is making good progress and the folks involved seemed awfully excited. Thanks again to Roy for providing us with the majority of the photos above and some additional info.
