logo1Greetings, beer-lovers! The Los Alamos Beer Co-op has reached a milestone. They have begun the process of hiring a head brewer. We know there are professionals out there as well as many talented homebrewers, so if you’d like to get involved with a brand new effort, here’s a great opportunity.

The LABC is just getting off the ground, so it’ll be a lot of work, but on the other hand, you’d have a lot of freedom to help define the beers, the taproom, and even the business itself. Los Alamos is a small, sleepy town in the mountains northwest of Santa Fe powered by the famous national laboratory. It has many good qualities like lots of outdoor activities, a good school system, and it’s very safe. It sounds like this would be a very rewarding job for the right person.

Here is the full text of the LABC’s ad with details of what they’re looking for in a brewer:

The Los Alamos Beer Co-operative is looking for a professional brewer with both skill and passion for brewing. We want someone with the desire to craft a product that people love and the enterprising spirit to start something new. The brewer will help establish and grow a start-up business with the incredible backing of hundreds of beer lovers — the first brewery and tap room in Los Alamos. We will also be the first craft beer co-operative in New Mexico — funded by our community membership.

We are looking for a talented, creative, and driven brewer to get us going. You will take charge of brewing with our 3.5-bbl brewing system, creating new craft beers of your own design and also those requested by our membership. This is an operations as well as an R&D assignment. You will be the master of our brand, and the creator of beverages that the region will seek out.

Responsibilities:
– Handle all aspects of brewing operation from concept to service of finished product
– Take the lead in the development of beer recipes and styles
– Select, purchase, and maintain inventory of ingredients
– Brew a consistent and clean product
– Transfer product safely and efficiently throughout the brewery
– Trouble-shoot and maintain equipment
– Keep records of the brewing process for repeatability and taxes
– Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of all equipment and work areas
– Attend brew events to promote the beer and brand
– Other ad hoc duties as they arise
– Note: position may be part-time to full-time as required

Knowledge and Abilities:
– Beer style and sensory knowledge
– Wort production, fermentation, and serving skills
– Basic lab skills
– Good work ethic
– Attention to detail
– Ability to frequently lift 55-lb sacks of grain
– Good communication skills

Ideal Candidate:
– High school diploma or equivalent
– Brewing Degree or Certification a plus, but not required
– 3-5 years of professional experience brewing on a commercial system
– Strong mechanical ability
– Organized, detail-oriented and attentive to quality and standards
– Highly motivated and able to work without supervision
– Flexible, accommodating, confident, team-oriented and self-reliant
– Excellent time management, prioritization, and task scheduling skills
– Keeps accurate records and reliable production projections
– Flexible schedule with the ability to work off hours, evenings and weekends as required
– Willingness to assist with tasks outside of listed responsibilities
– Experienced in developing recipes and performing and managing all brewing and production operations

The most ideal candidate could also take on the management of the associated taproom.

This is a unique chance to join a small brewery-in-construction. In addition to the 3.5-bbl brewhouse, we have five 7-bbl fermenters and five 7-bbl serving tanks –- all the resources to provide you with everything you need to brew, produce and distribute your products. We will be assembling our brewery in January 2015. Come help us assemble the system and start brewing for a February or March 2015 opening.
