There is always something special when two of our local breweries collaborate on the creation of a new beer. For Chama River and Nexus, it happens to be even a little more special than usual today. The two breweries on opposite sides of Interstate 25 have created The Lighter Fare and The Darker Fare, an ESB and an Irish dry stout, just in time for that silly Irish holiday. Beer lovers can combine the two (Darker is on nitro) to create a perfect Black and Tan for the holiday.
The story behind the collaboration goes beyond simply two brewers working together. St. Patrick’s Day holds a little extra meaning for Chama brewer Andrew Krosche and Nexus brewer Kaylynn McKnight. It happens to be their third anniversary as a couple, as well as her second anniversary at Nexus. These two beers mark the first time they have collaborated as head brewers, well, at least just the two of them. They have worked together on past beers, such as the 505 for ABQ Beer Week, but that was with a lot of other brewers also participating.
They sent me a few photos from their brew day, as anyone can see here, as well as descriptions of the two beers. Andrew created the recipe for the ESB, Kaylynn created the recipe for the stout.
The Lighter Fare (5% ABV, 28 IBU): One of two beers brewed in collaboration with Nexus Brewing Co., The Lighter Fare is our rendition of a classic English Strong Bitters or “ESB.” Exhibiting a brilliant copper appearance, ornamented with a delicate head. Honey, bread, and faint fruity esters on the nose. Medium to medium-full in body, with light toast, caramel and pralines on the pallet. Finishing with a complementing, but noticeable bitterness and toffee.
The Darker Fare (5.3% ABV, 30 IBU): The second of two beers brewed in collaboration with Chama River Brewing Co., The Darker Fare is our nitrogenated rendition of a Dry Irish Stout. This rich mahogany-colored ale will cascade into your glass to have a thick velvety head. Chocolate and notes of roast compliment the subtle coffee undertones on the nose. The nitrogen bubbles create a creamy, fudge like palate, and hints of espresso finish dry and roasty. Cheers!
Combine them and you get …
The Black & Tan (5% ABV, 29 IBU): Join us in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and our brewers’ three-year anniversary by enjoying our two collaboration brews layered together to make a classic beer cocktail known as a Black and Tan. Sláinte chuig na fir, agus go mairfidh na mná go deo!
(Health to the men and may the women live forever)
If you have time amid today’s holiday, stop by either Nexus or Chama (or both), and enjoy these two new creations, or merge them together. And if you see Andrew and/or Kaylynn, wish them a happy anniversary.
