The Week Ahead in Beer: Giving back and getting the big brews in cans

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s seven breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.
Stoutmeister puts on his serious face to handle The Week Ahead in Beer.

If the obnoxious TV commercials weren’t enough of a reminder (why, Zachary Levi, WHY?!), the holiday season is fully upon us, which means it is a great time to give back and still pick up some tasty treats for yourself or others. You can do all of that this week between three breweries. First up, today (Wednesday) sees two big beers returning in cans and on tap. Marble brings back its monstrous Imperial Stout at all three locations, while Second Street offers up another run of Skookum Barleywine at all three of its locations. Snag some cans to go and get that weekend started early. Speaking of the weekend, Friday night will see the return of the Desert Darlings to Tractor Wells Park for the Nightmare Before Christmas Edition of Hops & Dreams at 8 p.m. This time around, there will be a $5 charge at the door, but that money is for charity. Tractor’s current partner in its Beer for a Better Burque (BBB) program is Albuquerque Area Firefighters Random Acts, a joint effort by Albuquerque Fire Rescue and the Bernalillo County Fire Department, and it will be the beneficiary of all of the money. You can snag a pint of Structure Fire Red Rye IPA, which also benefits the charity, and enjoy an amazing performance by some of the most talented and entertaining bellydancers on the whole darn planet.

On the new beer front this week, there are a few options to check out. Black Snout rolls out Kessler Kraze Hazy Pale Ale. Bombs Away drops the Harvest Edition of its All Clear! Apple Beer. Bosque added Mango Cider to its lineup. Canteen is feeling smooth with Leche Suave Milk Stout. Cantero brings back its popular Sour Grapes. Ex Novo is tapping You’re Doing Terrific (Gose) and For Whom the Helles Told, plus cans of It Conquered the World Hazy IPA are now available. La Reforma drops Bomba Scotch Ale. Nexus resurrects G-Bird Grapefruit IPA. Red Door celebrates Friday the 13th with Jason’s Bloody Gose. Sidetrack recently added Norse Pale Ale and Autumn Lager. Starr Brothers brings back Zombies in the Manger for another holiday run. Steel Bender taps Misfitter Alt for another run this Thursday. Thirsty Eye takes flight with Moonracer Chocolate Stout on Friday.

UPDATES: A lot of beers were released late in the week after our usual deadline. Bombs Away brought back High Speed Low Drag Lager. Bow & Arrow hits the mark with Outwest Bo Pils. La Cumbre released the winter edition of Project Dank on tap and in cans. Sidetrack rolled out Buster Brown Ale.

Up in Santa Fe, it is otherwise quiet besides the Skookum. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row has more CojonHaze IPA and Munich SMASH.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of December 9.
